If Apple expects to lead the post-PC market, they need to think way outside the box like Steve did. iPad could have included:
More basic memory and ram.
A 10 megapixel camera.
Production invironment. Not everyone uses only Word and PowerPoint to earn a living.
A stylus, for Pete's sake.
External USB or even Thunderbolt.
And finally, but not completely, mend relations with Adobe and allow Flash compatibility.
Post-PC implies replacement. I am sure that the direction to smaller, more portable devices that amplify our ability to create, build and think are the future. I am disappointed that Apple didn't take a larger bite and present a device that is little more than an iPad 2 with a high resolution screen.
I remember the last time Apple was without Jobs and that very nearly destroyed the company. I hope history isn't repeating itself.

I think you are describing an Android tablet. And we all know how well those are selling.

CS majors don't use 10% of the processing power of their Macbooks. ;) Writing code, especially college level course work is not ressource intensive at all. But... writing code on a tablet would be a major PITA.

You don't need the power to edit the code. It can eat quite a bit to compile code that links in lots of libraries. Running code can eat lots of cycles. Just try factoring large prime numbers or fitting an elliptic curve.

If you don't have 4G LTE in your city and you buy the 4G ipad, is it still 3G compatible?

Yes.

I was compiling and linking gnome on a Pentium II with no problem, and really, linking in lots of libraries is Gnome's specialty. Linking the object files is also not quite as processor intensive as compiling them, which isn't quite intensive either (just long if you have hundreds of source files...)

Compiling code is a non-issue really, one rarely does full rebuilds of projects. Modern build systems (heck, ancient build systems like Makefiles) know what to and what not to compile.

Again, CS major. Context. College level coursework.

Good thing that college level coursework has more limited datasets for students to work on so they don't waste time waiting 3 hours for their code to execute. ;)

For how long?

Apple is already leading the Post-PC market. Adding the things you suggest would make the iPad a bigger, heavier much worse product that has no sense of itself. The battery life would also be terrible. You're basically describing every Android tablet that is about to come out.

Yes, Apple is deservably leading the Tablet market now, but Android OS has taken the lead in the smart phone market and captured 22% of the Tablet market. Apple had 95% of that market last year and is down to 75%. According to analyst, that lead will fall to below 50% in 2 years. (http://mobile.bloomberg.com/news/20...n-ipad-in-fourth-quarter-researcher-says.html)
I have been staunchly in the Apple family since 1984. I have never owned a PC and my phone is an iPhone 4s. Android is not elegant, user friendly nor capable of leading us into the next era. But it is becoming ubiquitous in the same way that DOS and Windows saturated the personal computer world.
Blackberry used to occupy an almost unchallenged position in the business world. Now , RIM is fighting for survival in the face of competition from Apple and Android. The main reason for their downfall was a lack of creativity and foresight that kept them intrenched in a nich market that was being flooded with capable and less expensive alternatives.

Apple has the ability to leap ahead of the Android market not just keep pace. The markets will pay a premium price for devices that do things others can't. It has already demonstrated that a capable but less superior, cheaper system will be chosen over a system that is only slightly better but much more expensive.

Apple has made many questionable decisions recently, (Final Cut Pro X for instance). The rather disappointing announcement of the new iPad seems to be a continuation of this.

Oh dear, Steve hasn't even been gone for that long and Apple is already making huge stupid decisions. The "New iPad"?!?! Are you kidding? Why not just iPad 3 - keep it simple stupid!

What are they going to do when they come out with the 4th iPad model - the "newest iPad" or "new new iPad" or better yet, "new iPad 4". Sheesh, this is retarded.

Aside from that, the iPad itself is pretty cool, I'd be curious as to the quality of the pictures it can take, even though its only a 5 megapixel camera.

The new iPad is pretty simple imo. If you need numbers for your uncreative mind you can go ahead and call it the iPad3

So they're basically advertising, like mad, that it's a $500+ photo display. :) Really, that's the main feature Apple is banking on...the display. We all know it is more than that.

I wonder how Facetime is going to be on this...there was no mention of the front facing camera...better then iPad 2? I'd love to grab one of these for my dad if the the front camera is equal or better than iPhone 4/4s

You do realize it's just called "iPad"...right?

"The new iPad" simply means it the new "iPad".

I have no idea how people are thinking they are calling it "the new iPad".

They would never do that. Please....sorry...but, please.

A little bit of research and looking around would have given you the answer. Or if you were to buy one, you would see it's just called "iPad". Or if you watch the TV AD...at the end it says "iPad".

iPad

I agree completely.

However, MacRumors is guilty of encouraging his line of thought by putting "The New iPad" in quotation marks in the headline to this article. The correct syntax would have been to eliminate the quotes, which incorrectly imply that "the new iPad" is some sort of official reference to the product. Bad MacRumors!

According to analyst, that lead will fall to below 50% in 2 years.

you mean "analysts" add an "s" to pluralize

I agree with everything you mentioned...Apple has/had a great grip on the Tablet market but today's announcement seems shallow. I don't really see the average iPad 1.0 owner upgrading (plunking down another $500+). Sure, non-iPad owners will certainly buy because it's the latest and the word has been out for months that a new one is coming.

What really irks me (among other things and I'm trying not to rant) is that there is 0 integration with iPhoto. We have thousands of pix on our Mac and love iPhoto...but I can't do any management of iPhoto on the iPad?! Ludicrous! We would love to be able to sit on the couch and go through an Album of 200 pix and delete the dupes or fuzzy pix, for example. Oh no...can't do that in 2012...gotta go sit in front of the Mac. :(

I think Apple goofed on this release...we'll see how the year ends and where Apple's stock is. I think a lot of the stock madness since December has been all about iPad 3.0. My bet is the stock goes back down to $300 or lower by end of year.

It's a different one than the current kne, therefore it is new

Hum... you do realise that only you can answer that. No one here can tell you what your needs are.

I guess if one has to ask, its probably closer to yes than no.

For me, it could replace the browsing, music and some text editing part of my MBP.

For the Xcode, Eclipse, boot camp and/or running virtual machines part (And no gaming involved!)... not "quite" there yet.

But there used to be a time where I didn't think a laptop could replace a desktop for these things either. Well, one that was actually transportable and would not fry you testies...

The post PC era doesn't mean no computers. Tim even addressed this in the keynote.

They are talking about the computer not being the major device for common users. If you are a computer coder, or a pro film editor etc, you are not a common user

Post-PC implies replacement.

In much the same way family station wagons are now used to restock your local supermarket each night. Sorry it's not about replacing it's about understanding many people were over buying Computing power to suit there needs.

The people who needed PC aren't going away only the people who thought they needed a PC.

The three iPad 1 owners I know and a HP TouchPad owner all ordered the new iPad today.

In terms of the stock, its going to be north of $600 in a few months.

People said the same thing about the iPad2...they goofed on the release...the stock will be down. The madness has been that they reported record earnings that blew people out of the water.

It's amazing how blind people are.

Apple is leading the post PC market and by a wide margin.

It has more RAM and basic memory.

Megapixels don't matter. The sensor does.

You can buy a stylus if you want. Steve said if your tablet needs a stylus, you failed at designing it.

Who uses USB anymore? You don't need TB on a tablet where it's a media consumption device and made to work with iCloud

Mend with Adobe for Flash. That's hilarious. Considering Adobe has given up developing Flash for mobile devices because they cannot engineer a product that doesn't sap battery life, why would Apple need to mend anything when Adobe is making new products for the iPad.

Your mindset shows that you are a person who has no clue how technology and the arts come together. It's not about specs and key words like Flash. Learn that.. Riddle me this...why are the majority of content sites already moving to or already coded in HTML 5.0? Because the iPad and iPhone don't use Flash, that's why.

You obviously can't read FACTS can you.

Android devices captured 22 percent of global tablet shipments in the three months to Dec. 31, up from 2.3 percent in the preceding quarter, the Boston-based researcher said in a statement today. The iPad accounted for 75 percent of shipments in the period, down from about 95 percent, it said.

Did you see the KEY WORD in there.

SHIPMENTS.

Not

SALES.

That means if I wanted, I could ship 1 billion of an item and sale "hey, I shipped this 1 billion of X item"...that doesn't mean they SOLD 1 billion of item X. Those Android tablets are sitting on shelves and not selling. That's why Apple reports SALES.

As usual another person that has no clue what they are talking about. My god I wish I had the ability to not have morals and take advantage of people like you in the real world. It would be so easy.

Been through all the classes. Wrote the compiler. Did all the linked list, advanced data structure stuff. Did the Senior Class Project for the super hot blond on my freshman year. Got her an "A++ Best project I have ever seen from a student." Feel guilty for it to this day.

I will say, back when I started, they made us take COBOL as a form of torture for our first class. My professor did not speak a word of English. He would lecture in Persian, then the Graduate Assistants would explain it all on his days off. If I had not been a professional programmer from the age of 16, I would have been quite lost.

It has the same VGA front camera...

If you think Apple doesn't want to go after new owners, then you're entitled to your opinion but marketing guys tend to 'think differently'. No stats to back this up, anymore than you do, but I would bet a minimal number of current iPad 2 owners will now go to an Android because they think the changes aren't good enough for the bucks spent. ALL the naysayers said the lack of 'true change' in the 4S would result in a total flop, a drop in Apple's image in the buyers eyes and definitely a drop in stock price, but being a naysayer really gives that person freedom to spout whatever they want, regardless of market knowledge.

Now this is a quote to save.

It has the same VGA front camera...

It makes me a bit mad when people focus (bad cow pun) on the number of pixels when they are talking about camera quality. First and foremost is optics. Next is the bit depth, then sensor size, noise ratio, then if you can't find anything else, it is the number of pixels. (I think the sound the camera makes when it goes click should come before pixels and the picture of the girl on the box, but that is just me.)

Quote of the day:

Last time I checked, a Dell screen with comparable ppi was retailing above $700... That's JUST the screen. No battery, ridiculously powerful CPU, LTE, a whole OS, etc. with free iCloud support. What Apple just did was they told the competition to sit the f back down before they could even stand up.

iPad 3.0?

So whats the story on "The New iPad" and not iPad 3..

It's great I love but it ain't a reinvention..

Perhaps hedging a bit due to litigation over the "iPad" name. May be this release will be the first "eyePad" if Apple doesn't prevail. Or, by the time the litigation is resolved, they could just dust-off and recycle the name "iPod", :)

The ad was pretty good. The voice-over had some awkward pauses but other than that it was great.

The funny thing is... the iPad 2 would have continued to sell if there wasn't an announcement today.

The fact that there is now a better, faster, stronger iPad will only HELP sales.

And why all this worry about current iPad owners not seeing the need to upgrade?

You know Canon releases 6 point-n-shoot cameras every year, right? You don't have to buy every one...
