STOP STOP STOP the insanity with this argument. If you think ten bucks is a rip off then you need to stop wasting your time here and go find a job that pays you more. Either that or drop 3 lattes off your spending for the month. Ten bucks is not a rip off. And has been stated a million times over in countless threads it is an accounting choice that Apple made. You may not like it, but they do in fact have to follow rules of accounting or suffer things like restatement of earnings etc.
Grow up and get over it.
Ah, I love the typical Apple fan argument. "It's not a ripoff! Be glad Apple did it at all!"
As if we're to be thankful to Apple for taking our money
Look, the iPod touch is a $299, $399, and $499 device. Any similar product by any other company would receive free updates similar to this. Again, the PS3, PSP, Xbox360, and Zune all have. If you honestly believe Microsoft and Sony go back and restate their earnings for the tens of millions of units they've already sold, then you're a fool.
Let's not forget that this is Apple. This is a company that shipped computers with 802.11n capable hardware, did not advertise it, then tried to charge people to enable that feature that was already included, by claiming "accounting" and "its a new feature".
Aside from the Exchange support (which could be sold separate) there is nothing new in 2.0. Third party applications have been available since the inception of the iPod touch. Why does Apple get to charge for access to something that has been free and the unit has been capable of for months?
This is also something that other developers/manufacturers would give away to the community as a "thank you" for being paid loyal customers. Instead of saying "thank you" to those who bought the iPod touch, Apple is saying "how much more money can we get from those who already bought the device?".
Again, the "Accounting" reason for this charge is 100% grade A BS. There is absolutely no reason at all Apple has to charge for this update. They are only doing it because they know there is a small number of people out there who will pay to get it.
And before you try that "get a better job" crap again, I have an original iPhone purchased BEFORE the price drop.
Apple should offer two versions of the software. One with exchange support that you pay for and one without, because without Exchange support, they are doing absolutely nothing new.
