If iphone users get the firmware for free, so should we.

Its not like ipod is cheap and iphone isn't.

This argument has been done to death, in terms of financial reporting standards and accounting practices, the iPhone and the iPod Touch are not the same.... just be happy that this firmware update is much cheaper than the January one.

Forgot to actually read the terms and conditions of the update. Anyways, will one update work on multiple iPod touches in the house, or will I have to pay $9.99 three times?

If the other computers/accounts in the house are "authorized" (like sharing downloads on up to 5 computers) then the update should be free for the other touches in the house.

It has nothing to do with being tight or not. 8 euros is no big deal. Its all about being ripped off all the time over here.

i am angry at apple for still ignoring our marketplace over here and leave us in the shadow. For them we are just a small market place, meaning less bucks for them , so why bother giving us an official apple store like the rest of europe has with normal pricing?

They even ignore us localizing Mac OS X in our language! Not that I do give a **** about that, I prefer my english menus, but some users like the OS to be officially in their own language and not have to use buggy hacks all the time risking their expensive machines with problems just to have something that all the others have officially.

I already paid overcharged for everything i have regarding apple. My imac core duo (first intel imac) cost me 2200 euros. US store? Much much much less!

Its all about being treated the same with the rest of the world.

You haven't mentioned what country or have you?
And like all things retail, you could have chosen to NOT be "overcharged" by not buying the products. No one forced you to buy them did they? It was your choice alone to pay the price, if you felt you were being to ripped off, then why did you buy them... so you could complain about it later?

It would be nice if it worked that way...but due to some Amercian legal guff this can't happen I'm afraid! Now...it's only $10, stop being so tight! ;)

Theres not a single law on the books here in the US that states that Apple has to charge for new features.

Apple just uses "accounting reasons" as a scapegoat to rip people off.

Microsoft, Sony (of all people!) and many others give free functionality updates all the time.

Look at the PS3 and PSP. Free functionality updates for years now with no extra revenue. You could buy the system and never buy a single game, movie, or anything and you'll still get free functionality updates.

Same with the Xbox360. You don't have to pay for Xbox Live and you still get free functionality updates for life.

Microsoft did the same thing with the Zune. You didn't need to have a Zune Pass or have ever bought anything from the Zune Marketplace. Yet they brought out a firmware update that took the original Zune up to the level of the second generation Zune. Complete with a whole new UI, new software, wireless syncing (why don't the iPhone and iPod touch have this yet?).

Apple basically charges for everything that everyone else offers free.

thats not the point! we pay 600 $ for a 16 GB Touch !!! thats almost 2 Touchs in the state

My iPod Touch is fully "2.0 updated".

I am a happy Apple!

As for the pricing, deal with it. It is cheaper. Besides, the 2.0 was for iPhone anyway. Be glad that Apple did the iPod Touch update as well!

STOP STOP STOP the insanity with this argument. If you think ten bucks is a rip off then you need to stop wasting your time here and go find a job that pays you more. Either that or drop 3 lattes off your spending for the month. Ten bucks is not a rip off. And has been stated a million times over in countless threads it is an accounting choice that Apple made. You may not like it, but they do in fact have to follow rules of accounting or suffer things like restatement of earnings etc.
Grow up and get over it.

Sorry, but that IS the point. If you feel as if you are being ripped off, then don't buy it. And if you of free will pay the price... don't whine about it!
I'm not saying its fair, but whining about how expensive it is, and then turning right around and buying it, does nothing to influence Apple to adjust their pricing in your country.

Consumerism, Supply & Demand, Market willingness to absorb cost.
Simple, simple, simple. You can't logically complain about the cost if you and your countrymen buy the products. If sales tanked in your country because you and others decided not to be ripped off by paying the prices, don't you think Apple wouldn't notice and figure out they needed adjust prices? But when you go a head and buy the products... and you can't tell me you NEED an iTouch, you WANT an iTouch, so you pay the price. Deal with it and stop whining about your choice to pay the inflated price in your country.

Right on!
But really, you're forgetting the amazing scene of entitlement Apple users have over their purchases. I want it, I want it for free and I want it NOW! :p

Just checked BHphoto.com and they've lowered their price for an Ipod Touch without the January Updates to $239.95 with full warranty (not refurbished).

That means you can update it to 2.0 for a total of $249.90!

The site is not open right now however. They regularly shut down on Friday for maintenance and reopen on Saturday at 9:45 pm.

Well, sorta. Spiritual maintenance. They close for the Sabbath.

Same applies to purchased apps as well, presumably?

Ah, I love the typical Apple fan argument. "It's not a ripoff! Be glad Apple did it at all!"

As if we're to be thankful to Apple for taking our money

Look, the iPod touch is a $299, $399, and $499 device. Any similar product by any other company would receive free updates similar to this. Again, the PS3, PSP, Xbox360, and Zune all have. If you honestly believe Microsoft and Sony go back and restate their earnings for the tens of millions of units they've already sold, then you're a fool.

Let's not forget that this is Apple. This is a company that shipped computers with 802.11n capable hardware, did not advertise it, then tried to charge people to enable that feature that was already included, by claiming "accounting" and "its a new feature".

Aside from the Exchange support (which could be sold separate) there is nothing new in 2.0. Third party applications have been available since the inception of the iPod touch. Why does Apple get to charge for access to something that has been free and the unit has been capable of for months?

This is also something that other developers/manufacturers would give away to the community as a "thank you" for being paid loyal customers. Instead of saying "thank you" to those who bought the iPod touch, Apple is saying "how much more money can we get from those who already bought the device?".

Again, the "Accounting" reason for this charge is 100% grade A BS. There is absolutely no reason at all Apple has to charge for this update. They are only doing it because they know there is a small number of people out there who will pay to get it.

And before you try that "get a better job" crap again, I have an original iPhone purchased BEFORE the price drop.

Apple should offer two versions of the software. One with exchange support that you pay for and one without, because without Exchange support, they are doing absolutely nothing new.

Finally got it up and running - Super Monkey Ball is hard!
Wondering whether I should shell out another £6 for Crash Bandicoot... If only it were the real game :D

Well I updated with the unofficial version and restored it.
Funny thing is that it did not ask me to purchase the firmware...
(Original URL is now blocked saying that 'you are not authorised to access this file')

What a great thing to see just moments after you awake from short sleep from waiting the night before for the same thing. :D

wonder can the ipod touch now can read the microsoft word file? didn't saw any word reader in my 2.0 ipod touch...

Loophole

Hey,

I got my 2.0 update for free. Not torrent etc. Here's what I did:

1. Force into recovery mode.
2. Restore it. Note, as you accept the license agreements, "2.0 Firmware" ;).
3. Wait around 15 mins.
4. Re-sync your things.

Congratulations! You've just gotten 2.0 Firmware for free without torrents! :D

TheMacBookPro

p.s. Maybe against EULA but it's not from torrent. So POSSIBLY not legal. I do NOT support piracy. If it is illegal, please tell me and I will purchase the firmware from the Apple Store. Thanks. (yes I know sounds corny :D)
