Yeah, I agree. Where is all of this advanced battery technology that we have heard about being tested over the past 5 years. I use to read about batteries that would charge to 90% in less than 3 minutes and run for several hours. Or there were the micro fuel cell type batteries. Charge with gas and run for 24 hours.
Yes I read about those same fuel cells last year I think! I guess that they never really panned out outside the laboratory. Probably too expensive at this point to mass produce... :(

You could look at it that way, but it's not completely accurate. Also, clock speed is independent of actual performance, which is based on how many instructions get executed per clock cycle. Not simple how many clock cycles there are (wich is the GHz). ;)

In fact you'll get no where near double the single core speed... there are many tasks that you cannot do with two processor cores at the same time... But yes, its much more complicated than just the GHz performance.

That's the problem with elitism. You think you're better than someone by the type of a computer one uses?
heh too funny. :p I think that Mac and PC users are of equal intelligence, but smugness is off the charts.

Quality

There is no doubt a premium to be paid when buying an Apple, but there is a big difference in quality.

And lately quality control has been an issue. Here's to hoping this rev. has a better screen, among other things.

I agree with that... though I was mentioning more about 'quality' in terms of design quality rather than production quality. In which case, Apple are quite good.

Does anyone know when in February the Macbooks are shipping, and if it is likely that if i wait until friday it would be into march or something. please help. want to get it ASAP but need to think some more time.

Only info on that is that in the Keynote Steve said if you want one order soon. They are most likely in limited supply with those processors. Intel CEO Paul Okenfold (or whatever) said they just shipped their 1 millionth Core Duo chip. Sounds like a lot but that is to ALL manufacturers and they sold over 30 million last year, so I figure at best Apple will have 100,000 spread across all their products that use them. Anyone care to give estimates on how many of these new mac they will sell this week?

Office Native when?

When will Microsoft Office be native to Mac-intel? What about Adobe Illustrator?

That's too bad to hear. I guess being a non-laptop owner, I saw this update as a really good one - however it is interesting and good to hear the opinion of someone like yourself who has been following the laptop market a lot more closely.

It's just three things turning me off...

1. No DL-drive / only 4x DVD burner

2. No PC-Card slot anymore (it will take at least a year before everyone has adapted to the smaller format)

3. Battery life seems to suck. Although I hope that Anandtech was wrong and the books/batteries were just not optimized or sth.

If they can convince me of the battery life there is still the issue with the drive... what happened to the old one? Geez I wanted one. :(

God. One of you people.* You know. I've come to the conclusion that you guys are like a frog dropped into a pot with the water slowly turned up. At some point you are boiling and you don't even know it. Of course you don't have problems with your current hardware. Its all you've ever experienced. The initial benchmarks on a 2.0Ghz Core Duo at Anandtech , to a certain extent, substantiates his claims. But whatever floats your boat.

Rosetta is actually not an emulator... but your point still stands. Although I have no idea where you got the 800Mhz figure from. I am sure that it would be better than that/

I have a friend that is an Apple developer and he was using the 800 mhz G3 analogy based on the developer system. I suppose the Yonah outperforms the developer system but probably not by a whole lot because as I understand it Rosetta doesn't really have the ability to take full advantage of the dual core.

I thought you could hardly notice it... although the extra space on top of the screen does seem a little 'empty'...
That's where the yellow sticky with your username and password goes

I am buying a new macbook pro, but can't decide whether or not to get Applecare or not. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Sam

...you get Applecare, then when in two years from now it "accidentally" breaks up, they'll replace it with the correspondent model of the line in 2008... ;)

Well I for one am very excited about this update....long time coming. I'm curious to see how this improved logic pro, the main pro app I use. Hopefully it will be optimized for it soon. :D

What a bunch of retards everyone is.. I swear.. first everyone waits for the new powerbook and they're like "It better be dual core or else i'll kidnap steve job's momma".. now when they release it.. everyone says its not good enough. Not good enough??

Firewire will be dead.. it sucks for the real pro users.. firewire drives run at what? 7200 rpm? Thats utter crap! We need atleast 10,000 rpm or 15,000 rpm drives. I was amazed that instead of a PC card, they included a Express /34 card.. fantastic! That's preparing for the future.. I'll be the first one to buy a Express /34 SCSI adapter so I can use my scsi drives with the macbook.

And then they do all these comparisons with the Acer.. geez.. for a $500 difference, yes I'll go with the macbook. I prefer the OS (my windows laptop was running flawlessly for 6 months.. and 3 days ago it just crashed.. some kind of system error.. and i don't even use it to go online..so there's no spyware or anything!)

A beautiful laptop, a powerful OS, additional little features like the magnetic power adapter bit, the isight built in, backlit keyboard, Express /34 (a BIG plus for pros) .. you're telling me you would want the Acer over the macbook? For 500 bucks? When you do buy the Acer, don't forget to spend money routinely on updates.. on anti-virus software, backups, etc. etc.

The dual layer drive support is not there because, dual layer is not THAT popular. Dual layer dvds are expensive and slow.. I'd rather buy a hard drive for backup than have a stack of dual layer DVDs.. the next MB will have a Blue Ray DVD drive (if its standard by then) Yes, they could have included a dual layer drive to appease the whiners, but I don't find it necessary.

I figure there will always be people who will never be satisfied and will keep praying and waiting for Rev. A,B,C,D and so on.. What do you want? a Quad core 15.5 ghz laptop? Honestly, what do you whiners need that power for?

I don't much care for Acer comparisons. For me, the whining isn't about PC vs. Mac. It's about new Mac vs. keeping my current Mac. And I'm definitely not wasting the money on this Frankenstein.

But wait... losing FW800 and Dual layer is ok because it's not "THAT popular," but Express Card is a great idea because it looks to the future? Sure, Express is a great idea, but so are including things that also look to the future even if they're not that popular now.

And I don't think people are complaining about the loss of dual layer mainly because of backup. You probably haven't ever had to pick what features you want from a DVD because single layer can't contain everything a commercial DVD can. It's like making up for speed gains by replacing the drive with one that only burns 50 minutes on an audio cd.

A lot has been said about having to sing this machine's praises because we should expect to lose some features to make up for gains in performance. When have the rules changed? Maybe we're not getting the battery performance or size and redesign I'm sure we'd all want. But at the very least, no one should be giving up features. That's just not what an real upgrade is about.

Does anybody else find the iSight ugly as sin?

It is very ugly indeed. The same stands for the IR receiver at the front of the unit.

Hmm so that's what those sony engineers were doing at apple's labs all these months...

did they come up with the name as well??:p

Vulgarity is evidence of a lack of ability to express oneself with sophistication and imagination. Rather plebeian. And I thought the average Mac user had a higher intelligence than the average PC user.

Sorry but I think YOU Asked what BFE stands for - that's just what it stands for just like people that say WTF. It's only vulgar when you have to spell it out :) Besides it's not really vulgar if you think about it - it only means in the middle of nowhere - I guess it is a mid-west thing.

I just placed my order for the 1.83. Seems like I've been waiting forever for a new PowerBook (or Mac Book Pro). Now where's that Fedex truck?

The professional Mac laptop line will be completely redesigned with the introduction of the MEROM chip from Intel. That is where the real jump in technology (performance per watt) will take place including the 1st implementation Robson technology. I'll stick it out with my T40 until then (approx the same time as the 3 year warranty runs out on it). Only 8-10 months more to go sigh!

I am still quite impressed with the new MacBook despite the high price.

Are you high? Did you even read the other posts?

The question was "will PS be usable on the new laptops (before the next verison)".

I replied by stating that Jobs said that pros will not find it usable.

Someone replied that it must run faster than a mini.

I speculated that that was probably not the case, since "pros" like myself and others use computers with similar speed as a mini. Therefore, if it is unusable for a new laptop, and not unusable for a current laptop, it probably runs better on a current laptop (or similar). Obviously this whole topic depends on your definition of "usable".

Someone else chimed in with the "fact" that Rosetta "emulates" on a level of an 800 G3. That hasn't been verified.

Got it?
