Because Apple doesn't support illegal activities. YES ripping DVDs you own is illegal.

Who said anything about illegal activities?! Like I said, Apple TV requires you to have a computer, with iTunes turned on at all times. What a waste of energy. God forbid you've got one of those new iMacs where they produce a ton of heat.... or older Mac Pros which are noisy and also produce a lot of heat.... all that just to have the Apple TV play a movie?

Ridiculous.

I ask it here... I got a few external Hard Drives with media on it, and I got infuse on the ATV4. What would be a good (and cheap) way to share the media via wifi ? Unfortunately my Airport Express does not allow me to do that.

Well I use a Mac Mini with homesharing turned on in iTunes. Has been working well for me for some years now.

Does this update allow Siri to type what you say in... the YouTube app?

...or in any app where you have to type in things ThatTakesForeverWhenTypingEachLetterOneByOne

All I want is the damn subtitles to go away on Netflix. I've turned them off from my computer several times, and they keep appearing.

Can't wait to update. Does it fix DD from losing dynamic range?

What about pass through like Infuse or Plex. The ATV4 is dumbing down Audio for mid/high end AV systems.

Total Bull.... I use my AppleTV all the time with my computer switched off. All the content I have bought from iTunes is available on it.
Unless it's Home Movies the user wants to watch on the AppleTV through home sharing.

Hey guys, I have an ATV3. This has been out for a little while, do you like your ATV4 or do you hate it? I'm thinking about snagging one for our living room but curious what you guys think.

Love my ATV4.0!
I can take the remote anywhere in the house, and use it to control volume or call Siri when i want to play music.
the App store is one major update for me.

The USB-C port should allows users to connect an external drive to it and have videos playback natively without the need of a wireless connection to another computer.

Why Apple hasn't done this already is stupid.

Is anyone going to attempt a hack of it?

In the meantime, plug a drive into your router and download Infuse. Problem solved for free.

When will Apple learn to use it's own App Store for things we don't all need? Is there really a need to update the whole OS for a App now a days? Keep it simple, Apple!

There are a ton of bug fixes in this update. The podcast app is just a bonus.

HOW do you watch your own content?!

Infuse, Beamer, Plex, Air Video, Airplay...tons of options.

Apple will never let you connect an External Hard Drive. Use something else. Or simply use iCloud for your home movies.

Siri no longer works for me, nor does my iPhone connect to my car's Bluetooth. But hey, let's fix the podcast app on the tv.
A limited number of people are experiencing your bug. Therefore, it will take time to track down the problem (maybe the problem is your car's Bluetooth implementation??). The podcast app for ATV was something everyone was missing. Nobody needs to figure it out. They just needed to build and release it.

You're comparing apples and oranges.

Um, it also contains bug fixes. Podcasts is the only outward appearing change.

Sorry, I don't buy that. Just about every device you that shows media on the TV allows for some sort of way to allow you to stream your own videos on the screen out of the box without resorting to 3rd party apps. Sort of the same reason why they don't make it any easier to stream your own files other than using iTunes and a Mac that is turned on to do the streaming. I mean at 1080p that is without delay, not any airplay type workaround that requires a computer or another Apple device. I'm talking about being able to do this without having to buy more equipment from them. If they wanted they could do this from iCloud like they do from iTunes. But its not about getting your own files on their device, its about getting their files you purchased from them on their own device. This is the same company that sold the iMac under with the tag line "Rip, Mix, Burn". The legality of these things only mattered when they started selling music themselves.
Unfortunately the bigger the player in this space the less incentive they have to give the user more control.

Plex or just use iCloud. Maybe Apple TV isn't for you. Return it and get a Roku. LOL.

For people who simply want to hook up a drive to their $100+ media player, Roku IS your best bet. If you WANT to buy an iPad or Mac or some other multi hundred dollar device to be able to do what the rest of the competing devices do from the start then the Apple TV is your best bet. Its also good for anyone who buys digital movies from iTunes instead of renting, which can be done with almost any other device.

Plex is laggy. Roku would be great though but I heard it has limited codec support; afaik, it cant playback mp4s with aac 5.1 audio.

Plex runs fine on an old Roku I have even with an airport express getting the signal to it. The trick is to make sure all your computers and media players are hooked up wired even through 10/100 switches, even if those switches are wired to an airport base station to get the data from one part of the house to another they will work better that way. When too many antennas are trying to connect to the limited antennas of the airport base stations, things tend to slow down more. I can even have the Roku and Plex streaming at the same time along with the rest of my devices this way, when I did all this through wireless only things became laggy.

I got a nice surprise after the update. I fired up the new podcast app and found it was already populated with all the podcasts I used to watch on my old ATV3, so they must have been saved all along somewhere. Or perhaps they are saved in iCloud.
