Plex runs fine on an old Roku I have even with an airport express getting the signal to it. The trick is to make sure all your computers and media players are hooked up wired even through 10/100 switches, even if those switches are wired to an airport base station to get the data from one part of the house to another they will work better that way. When too many antennas are trying to connect to the limited antennas of the airport base stations, things tend to slow down more. I can even have the Roku and Plex streaming at the same time along with the rest of my devices this way, when I did all this through wireless only things became laggy.

Yeah at the moment my setup at home is all wireless... but, the good thing is, my condo was already setup with wired ethernet in the walls, however those lines all lead to my phone company's lines. But, since I don't have or need a landline phone, I can just make the source have one output and split the lines so that I can have wired access to my router from all the other rooms.

Only problem is; I don't know how to cut and install ethernet jacks! I'm gonna need to find someone to do it for me or pay very close attention to a plain as day youtube tutorial. I'd much prefer having everything wired.

You'll be surprised how easy it is to do. You should get a punch down tool. Everything can be found at your local Lowes or HomeDepot.

Great, now when is the Amazon prime app coming, they said it was coming in a few weeks, and that was nearly 2 months ago... any one have news on this???

If I remember rightly that was a rumour which originated based on a supposed comment from a customer support representative. Not the best source of reliable or accurate information at the best of times.
And the ATV doesn't need an update for an Amazon app, Amazon just need to make one. Which so far is looking unlikely, shame really.

Because Apple doesn't support illegal activities. YES ripping DVDs you own is illegal.

I would be perfectly happy if it only allowed me to watch movies downloaded from the iTunes store, although it would be nice if it allowed any movie in the same format and with the same metadata.

I have a couple hundred movies/TV shows downloaded from the iTunes store (most are digital copies that came with my DVD/Blu-Ray purchases). I would love to be able to put them all on a portable hard drive and hook that hard drive up to the AppleTV directly and be able to watch them wherever I am. Sometimes you don't have internet service, so you can't stream everything all the time. For example on my hunting and fishing trips we don't have internet or cell service in the cabin, so I have to take a Blu-Ray player and discs with, when it would be real nice if I could just take the Apple TV and a hard drive.

That's not true. I don't pay for Plex and i use it on a Roku at my friends house and my iPhone and iPad over LTE/Wifi at other locations. I've even airplayed movies at friends houses.

Yeah it is true.

You have to buy the app to play videos on idevices. Otherwise it only acts as a trial allowing you to use it as a remote.

The free plex app for your iPhone / iPad will not have video playback until you purchase the app.

The media server for plex is free. I have it setup on my nas, as Apple TV plays it fine. Idevices need a paid version.

It clearly states it on the AppStore, in the details section, playback is limited to 1 minute

Want to check if you have the full version of the plex app on your iPhone ?

Apple TV is a STREAMING device. It is not designed or marketed as a portable device. It is set up as a way to stream all your content from cloud services like Netflix and iTunes.

Apple already has Portable devices that you can download content on and watch offline.

Can't wait to update. Does it fix DD from losing dynamic range?
... The ATV4 is dumbing down Audio for mid/high end AV systems.

I'm not sure that Apple has acknowledge that this is a bug. I am beginning to think it is a feature and that they may implement this dynamic range compression on the older ATV's in a future firmware update.

I got a nice surprise after the update. I fired up the new podcast app and found it was already populated with all the podcasts I used to watch on my old ATV3, so they must have been saved all along somewhere. Or perhaps they are saved in iCloud.

Podcasts have been syncing via iCloud across iOS, Mac, and Apple TV for quite some time now. This includes subscribed Podcasts, mark as played, and playback position like in Movies and TV Shows from iTunes.

Since you seem to have all the answers, why so many questions?
ps. real original name

Because as great as the Boxee Box is, it has it's shortcomings and a glaring one is that it doesn't recognize drives larger than 2tb, LOL. Yeah, I'm sure you think I'm kidding... but yeah. Luckily it has 2 USB ports for expansion seeing how my 2tb drive is almost full, but... eventually I'm going to need to switch to another device. Right now my only two choices are;

- Roku
- AppleTV w/ VLC native app accessing files that are on my external connected to my Airport Extreme's USB port

Roku is a 'good' choice, but it's limited to only MKV and MP4 playback, which is fine since 80% of my files are in that format (some old TV shows are in AVI though). I've also heard that it cannot playback AAC 5.1 audio in an MP4 container, and THAT will cause major problems (no desire to convert all my movies or anyone future ones).

Boxee Box, unfortunately, is the best 'all around' solution... but if the USB-C port was utilized by VLC on the AppleTV, i'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Unless of course there's something else that exists which I don't know about.

If true, that's absolutely stupid.

I'm hoping it improves on playback when streaming video content from my MacBook iTunes library. Compared to my AppleTV 2, I've noticed somethings randomly in a movie the frame rate begins to judder, very frustrating!! Doesn't happen with Netflixs.

Is there a consensus on the New Apple TV?

What does it do well, and what does it not do well?

I've seen the kiosks, and was wondering if it's worth it?

Like, for example, can I travel with one (in the US) and access my iCloud content? Does it cache better? Is streaming better? I haven't heard enough yet about them...

I do not believe this to be true. I listen to Podcasts on my iPod which then syncs with iTunes... the mark as played and playback position DO NOT ever sync to my iPhone. It's useless for cross device listening and makes me wonder why anyone would use it.

I guess Podcasts are needed more than folders for someone at apple...

it does what i does well and other stuff just meh. There are many pros and various negatives like prices etc.
I have one and only because I paid $70 OOP due to reward certs and price matching a sale.
Cool stuff you can do now w the at4 is load koi and emulators into it. App store is a mess to search for stuff. Interface and siri remote feel like beta products.

I would like to see improvements in bluetooth controller performance. Currently having some intermittent issues with getting a controller to initialize and with input lag during gaming.

me too! thought I was the only one.

As we speak, the Apple TV is being marketed using phrases such as these (emphasis added by me):
"Apps have liberated television. They allow you to make individual choices about what you want to watch. And when and where you want to watch it."

It doesn't exactly scream "only content curated by Apple and its partners" or "only at home, not in your cabin". Note that the Apple TV already has some of the attributes of a semi-portable device. It already fits nicely in any kind of bag. It already lacks any sharp foot long spikes that would make it difficult to carry. Reading media files from a similarly portable USB storage can be seen as a very logical way to realize the promise of the quote.

Sadly, I got the podcast app to lock up the AppleTV to the point that no button presses on the remote had any effect. Had to do a power cycle to get things going again.

Not if you don't sell those copies. I doubt the MPAA is going to raid your house for making backup copies of your DVDs.

Sadly you are both pretty much right. The courts ruled that you do have the right to make a backup copy of media that you have bought. However, they also ruled that breaking encryption to do so is illegal. Since pretty much every commercially released movie on disc has some form of encryption that pretty much means it is illegal for you to back any of them up.

Now chances are the MPAA isn't going to come knocking down your door if you are just making copies of movies you own to use inside your own home. But just because they aren't going to do that doesn't mean that it isn't illegal. Its kind of like going 2 mph over the speed limit, you probably aren't going to get a speeding ticket, but it is still illegal.

Like I said before, I would be happy enough if they only allowed me to watch iTunes purchased/downloaded movies off a USB drive. They could even make you input the login/password that the movie was purchased under to verify it (that might be hard without an internet connection).

I realize that I could put these movies on my iPad/iPhone and hook up to a TV using the lightning to HDMI adaptor, but that is a big PITA and not very user friendly. I have also read reviews that the video quality is not very good, that it doesn't actually put out 1080p etc. It would be much nicer to be able to use the Apple TV an it's remote to control it from across the room.
