They didn't disclose the reason and you won't care to ask them?
I bought mine just a week ago, they should've let customers know in advance. Ridiculous.

Aaaah yeah, because the lowly grunts in the Apple Store have all kinds of insight into the product update pipeline.

You're still within the return window if you have issues with your current one. Go in and swap it out. Stop complaining.

I used to use that until this thing came into my life.. Now, I'll need to replace it with a wireless mat..

You state 'There are no design tweaks to the dock' then go on the say that the new part number 'suggests that the new model includes unspecified internal updates'. So there were design tweaks! I think you meant to say 'no external design tweaks'?

That would make a lot of sense. I’ve noticed with mine and my S4 that when sitting in the upright position, I’m getting the charging connected ‘ding’ frequently indicating a minor disconnect between the watch and the charger.

How annoying and un-elegant.

I have one of these as well, but replaced both nightstand lamps with those that have Qi wireless charging hidden in the base of the lamp. I use a standard AW charger now for my watch. But I loved this since I bought it in 2015 or 2016.

$79 is still a lot for this thing
I picked one up (the older one) when it was on sale at $59. At $59, it wasn't a bad of deal considering it came with a 2-meter Lightning cable that sells individually for $29 (I am not sure what the new one comes with).

It also wasn't a bad alternative to getting an extra Apple Watch charging cable, which sells at either $29 or $39, depending on the length.

I like the fact that I can use the same Lightning cable to charge both iPhone and Apple Watch. While the Charging Dock is obviously larger in volume than Apple Watch charging cable, the form factor makes it easier to slide in to the bag.

Your lamp isn't wide enough to charge both simultaneously?

No conspiracy theories. The old version wasn’t fully compatible with the Series 4. The charging tone would chime every few minutes or so when charging my Series 4 with the Stianless Steel band. Not sure if it was positioning or something more, but glad they released a new version. Hopefully this won’t have these issues.

I’m kind of surprised this wasn’t mentioned in the article. There’s several posts about this in the Apple Watch forum. MacRumors tends to ignore everything but the biggest of AW news, though.

Random - I’ve been using this dock since the original Watch was around, and have been using it for a few months now with my Series 4 without issue. I did think of that initially, how the 44mm will sit on the dock compared to the previous model, but it’s been fine. I do have the watch vertical with nightstand mode.

I loved mine. Sold it because it didn’t work right with my 44mm S4 in the upright position. I don’t think I’m going to pay 79 again for it though. At least not immediately.

Not really. And I don’t think the S4 supports standard Qi chargers. And even if it did, I use the stainless steel link band so it won’t lie flat.

I just checked and I don't think the wireless Belkin charger the Apple store has, would charge the AW either.. at least it doesn't list it.

I never understood the purpose of this dock. It’s basically a $79 pillow for your Apple Watch.
Well when you spend over £600 uk I don’t want my ss Apple Watch falling off a cheap stand , I got tbe first gen last summer and enjoy it ok nothing fancy well made but good quality

Perhaps a tweak of clearance when the puck is vertical to cater for the slight change on the 44mm S4?

That’s what I am thinking too. Wondering if the dimensions of the dock have been updated. My S4 44MM seems a little less stable when charging vertically on the dock than my S3 42MM did.
