Would it kill them to add a progress bar for the download/update process!?
The Home app is one of the worst apps Apple has ever put out, IMO. I think they had a single intern write it without any formal spec. It's horribly incomplete, and the paths you go down to accomplish anything are painful. Reminds me of MS apps. And it's not like the Home app is brand new, either. Meanwhile, they are apparently hiring a bunch more people for the group, with a number of additional home accessories coming down the pipe. I really have a hard time imagining how that's going to go, given what they've (not) done so far.

I'm starting to think Apple has gotten too big to succeed, but they'll be able to milk the brand for at least a decade or two. Of course, I'd rather them get their sh*t straight. This year has seen just about everything software-wise turn into 💩. That's not easy to fix.

Like afew others on here, i can't get it to recognise another voice other than my own (the account/user who set it up).

If my partner asks what on her calendar etc, it just says who are you? She enabled person requets etc. Tried turning it off and on etc.

The software lately has been so poor.

Mine started by saying 975 MB but then it change to 1.79 GB. That's why I'm here, to see which size it actually is.
Starting from 12.4 or whatever the last non-bricking update was.
Mine says 975 MB also - now downloading. Will probably let it update.

Give it some time. You’ll get a notification that voice recognition is ready from the home app.

It took about an hour to download and install (in Australia where we have woeful broadband). The stereo Homepods seem fine but I haven't tried personlised settings yet. Apple Support has some pages on how to set this up.
Update: I needed to restart my iMac in order for iTunes (Mojave) to find the Homepods for audio output.

I have 3, someone mentioned 9. Go back to your Android forum.
Sorry, 12 then.
And I’m just joking, I’m a huge Apple fan. HomePods just don’t seem to have caught on as much as some other Apple products, I’m sure they will keep iterating and improving them though.

Mine updated fine from 12.4, but since coming up on 13.2.1 they both can’t seem to reach Siri online. Don’t understand why. They just try and eventually give up saying, “that was taking too long.”

Streaming music to them, even using the new handoff, works. I’ve power cycled the HomePods multiple times, and other devices are working fine with Siri.

Oh well... Hopefully it’ll fix itself by morning.

Both mine updated fine. Going to put the ambient sounds to work tomorrow while trying to put my kids to sleep.

Just updated both of mine. No problems. And the "gear" rotated during both download and install.

Trivia: Back in the day when Apple first released the remote app it was literally written by one guy.

honest question, why some got bricked while others didn't although they are all the same device

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the bricking only occurred when the user tried to reset the device. Since Apple Music experienced downtime at the same time as the release of 13.2, many tried to reset their homepods to try to get it working again. There were also various other reasons (issues with the personalized voice recognition etc.) that caused people to factory reset. There may have been a few rare instances where the update itself, without reset, caused bricking too though, so it's hard to say!
