Next chance I get I have to see that 27 inch iMac. Looks amazing. And with a quad core, that is pretty cool.

As a life long Apple buyer- I don't like where Apple is going at all. My first mac was the all in one Classic but most thereafter were tower models- either Power Macs or Performas and having a tower is nothing but a benefit. Apple is taking this design nonsense to new ridiculous levels that provide no tangible advantage to computing. Either make the iMac enclosure big enough to support modern up to the date compenents or build a non Pro tower.

I don't really get the effort to make the iMac so pretty. If it was a tower, it they wouldn't need to focus so much on the exterior of the box since it would be out of sight more than likely. Make an attractive monitor (which they already do) and problem solved. Plus, they could use cheaper desktop grade internals and it's a win win.

I'll wait for the revision that'll hopefully be cheaper and/or bring the i5 down to the $1699 price point and keep my fingers crossed for Blu-ray. I damn sure wouldn't spend $2000-2200 for an i5/i7 with having a blu-ray drive.

I'm curious to know how an upscaled DVD will look on the 27" monster. I don't even like upscaled 480p DVD on my 1440x900 screen as is. Plenty of artifacts and jaggies.

I too would like a $1299-$1500 mini-tower, like the old $1299 single socket PowerMacs. I wish they brought out a modern version of that.

I understand your frustration with BD, even though I personally am not bothered by it.

I agree with a few of the posters that the 27-inch is probably too big for the average user, but I know a lot of graphic and page layout artists, website designers and photographers that are going to be looking at their equipment budget to see how soon they can justify buying one.

You are going to bee seeing a lot fewer Mac Pro workstations in the design, advertising and publishing industry studios from now on.

There are also a lot of people (like myself) that want to use the new 27" as their main HDTV in their main livingroom. I don't use conventional TV's just computers. This new iMac would be almost perfect.

I'm a little pissed since I got my iMac 2 months ago. I knew that newer ones were coming, but I felt the free printer and free iPod touch was a better deal.
My 2.93 ghz iMac is still more then enough for what I use it for, but I'm sure you know how it feels. I wasn't expecting the updates to be this big. It's my fault.

It's just a USB TV Tuner away. 26/27" is a good size for the majority of people. Even me.

Just buy a PC. It sounds like macs in general aren't for you.

They already know this. The trolls aren't here to sincerely debate the merits of Windows PCs vs. Macs. They're here to agitate the MacRumors segment of Apple's user base and astroturf their platform of choice (Windows).

It's almost never a good time to buy a Mac (or any computer), since there is always something better if you wait. Of course, you can wait forever, too. ;)

It's funny how competitive the iMac is once you factor in that ridiculous 27 inch screen. They never mention that, because that would weaken their viewpoint.

I wonder why these people take the time to come in here and complain about Macs when it's clear they will never buy one? What is that compulsion to waste one's time so intensely?

;)

Which is exactly why apple should have a simple straightforward method to enable that solution (read: HDMI in). Apple's software is the best out there, bare none but the restrictive nature of their hardware leaves much to be desired. People like me love Apple's OS but each release of new hardware has me smacking my forehead asking "Why, Steve, why?"

Also since the iMac is supposed to be the ultimate consumer machine- rear facing USB ports are an obsolute pain in the behind. Another reason I'd have to have the wired full size keyboard is for the extra USB 2.0 port that doesn't require and reach around. eSATA would be nice for my back up drive too (to use with Time Machine whenever I get a new one).

I hope one day Apple focuses less on the flash and dash instead putting effort into make better "computers."

I say enjoy your existing computer for another 6 months or so and jump on the new iMac with the next revision (which may include (*gasp*) Blu-ray).

I think that's what I'm going to do (I bought my 24" iMac back in June). I'm aching for that new 27" with i7, but I think I can force myself to wait a few months. I hope... ;)

The more I think about it, it's a pretty likely scenario. It's the only logical reason they switched to 16:9 out of nowhere.

I watch blu ray in my family room not at my desk in my office. This is a great upgrade for me and will enjoy it for years to come. I was a big basher of Apple when it came to iMac but this upgrade sealed the deal for me. I hope I like OSX and can learn it quickly.

Any book or course recommendations for a newbie?

I ask myself (and others) this question all the time. I don't understand the compulsion at all. I certainly don't troll Windows forums and talk about how crappy Windows is and how much better the forum members would be served by using Macs. It's an odd phenomenon, and one that has increasingly become a problem on MacRumors in recent months (though the mods appear to have no desire to do anything about it).

I am convinced that there are members of online forums (for all types of products) who sew the seeds of discontent and FUD for compensation (monetary or otherwise) from competing companies, and it would be naive to believe this doesn't really happen.

The more I think about it, it's a pretty likely scenario. It's the only logical reason they switched to 16:9 out of nowhere.

The whispered rumors said that Blu-ray was pulled at the last minute before production, so I fully expect them to show up in the next revision. Unless Apple made a strategic decision not to support Blu-ray now or anytime in the future (which would be a real shame).

new iMac + 360

So I was reading today on this site via gizmodo that the 27" can be used as a display with an input via Displayport. If this is the case, it could be used as a monitor to play Xbox360 on if there is a HDMI to Displayport adapter no?

This is the question inquiring minds are dying to know.

Forget BluRay, watch your BD on your home entertainment systems, it's not needed on your computer.

iTunes is currently 720p but that doesn't mean that it will not eventually be 1080p.

Just think of what you would have had to have subtracted in order to make BD an affordable option. It's not worth the cost.

This configuration is smart thinking on Apples part. It has ample power, high quality components, offers value for money, and is environmentally friendly. All of these things are going to make the iMac an incredibly attractive option for people who are needing to upgrade their XP machines and are wary of W7.

Optical drives are going to become increasingly less relevant in time, they just take money away that could be spent on more important components.

I couldn't agree more! I'm moving to apple and just ordered my 27 inch i7!

First, thanks to this board. I saw the rumor several weeks ago and delayed my purchase of a new imac. For those with a short memory. We were only talking about maybe a chip upgrade and a redesigned chasis. I think apple hit a home run with the new imac. LED display, quad core, magic mouse, etc...

I wish you blue ray people would stop complaining and let it go. Jobs said it was a world of hurt. Why would you think that after such a huge redesign they would leave the Blue ray out, only to update it later. I don't see it happening, personally.

What would you rather we watch on these new 2560x1440 screens? DVD? lol...

Jobs only said it was a "world of hurt" because it cut into his precious iTunes business model. Stop drinking the cool-aid.

You know nothing about business do you? Apple knows exactly what they are doing and call me a fanboy all you want but they are doing a lot of things right. If they weren't their products wouldn't be selling. Whether they are making new iMacs on steroids like the new ones intro'd yesterday or whether they are making just pretty machines, their products are selling.

If it's "pretty" alone that sells then that's what Apple should make. Gimme a break dude, no tech company will stay in business if they keep the mentality that legacy styled hardware is what they should be pushing.
Mini towers are fading away. Sony has done away with them, Dell is pushing more laptops these days as most companies are pushing AIO's, such as HP's Touchsmart. How many ads for HP mini towers have you seen lately? HP pushes the kitchen desktop.
Even the geeks on this forum need to get off their high horses and stop pretending that function is way more important to them than form. Everybody buys on form on some level. Most of the world buys form over function. It's no sin.

I just loved when I worked for an electronics store, the customer would come in acting like a "know it all" and pretend that he wanted specific features on his TV or no sale. Afterwards he started looking at the prettier and bigger TV's and completely forgot about the specs he asked for and just bought it. That's they way most people are.

mini displayport adapters

There are hdmi female to mini displayport male and vice versa adapters available. Just google it. I guess that means I could hook up my Sony blu-ray to my forthcoming iMac although I personally would not have need since it is currently hooked to my XBR7 Sony HDTV. If I eventually decide to get a blu-ray burner, oh well, OWC will get an order which comes with Toast Titanium Pro. Since I'm not doing movies yet that will be sometime in the future, if ever.

Next iMac "revision"

I say enjoy your existing computer for another 6 months or so and jump on the new iMac with the next revision (which may include (*gasp*) Blu-ray).

I think that's what I'm going to do (I bought my 24" iMac back in June). I'm aching for that new 27" with i7, but I think I can force myself to wait a few months. I hope... ;)

I also agree that blu-ray is coming on the next revision... but what everyone is #FAILing to note is two VERY important changes in this update:

a) the drop in price for the iMac (the 3.06Ghz was the top version at $2,199, granted with a 24" monitor not a 21.5"); and

b) the fact that not only a quad-core chip was included (that was all the back-and-forth in all the forums the last 30 days) but a DESKTOP version !

Next revision, besides blu-ray, might bring:
I) Standardization behind P55 mobo
- Core i3 to iMac 21.5" (with Core i5 BTO option)
- Core i5 to the low end iMac 27" and ready-to-order Core i7 at high end (with faster i7 BTO option)
II) New integrated/standard graphics solution (Nvidia, ATI or Intel ?)

I also expect a drop in MAC Pro prices (around $500) and, maybe, a new "MAC Pro Jr" based on the P55 mobo/Core i5 to solve the eternal quest for a mid-range desktop computer (which could be priced around $1,299-1,699)

But to play the "waiting" game is hard... I'm eager to jump into the 27" model right now... probably stick with the Core i5 as applications to fully utilize 8 threads are still 12-18 months away at least...

The answer is probably no, at least without a $150-200 adaptor and even then the results may not be too pretty. This thread has more info.
