I can't believe there are no matte, anti-glare screens. I feel sick. Apple's just not listening. A message to matte-supporters. There is a great need to increase the number of petition comments at http://macmatte.wordpress.com - so far there's close to 600 petition comments but we need to get this into the 1000's to get Apple's attention.

uh, apple just sold 3 million macs in 3 months. your petition has 600 signatures. even if it gets to 10,000 signatures, that is roughly .3%. I'm sure that'll grab apple's attention then.

That's my point!

I know you can upgrade the Mac Pro but for less you can get a quad core iMac and slap in a Radeon HD 4850. The i5 750 is 90% the performance of the i7 920.

In iMac you get only one graphics card and what about other stuff like all the controllers and multiple displays and other stuff. Mac pro is still best options for people you really need everything, but not sometimes - always ;) But imac is great and I see disigners and pro users looking to iMac as a seriuos option.

Student VS Student Developer

I just priced the Student Developer price for the high end 27" 2.8 Quad, once you add the $99 for Student Developer enrollment they come out to the same price, ~ $2080 as the normal individual education discount.

Kinda sucks bc usually Apple gives student developers a 20% discount.

Hmm, I want one so much, but the 4850 seems to be the only bad thing about the system. But I suppose you don't have to run games at max resolution, hell, I don't now. But the i7 should make up for it and let you run Crysis on high/very high on a decent resolution. Wonder when the next updates will be?

I can't believe there wasn't a bigger graphics card offered on the high end 27. That would be a selling point for me. I think I am going to use student loan next autumn and get a mac pro after all and keep using my cinema screen. Shame, I was hoping to upgrade to an imac to save some space.

Overall, I gotta give them 9/10 stars on the update. Just 512mb 4850m really going to hold it back -- then again apple tends to make up for the lower graphics needed elsewhere. My guess is energy usage on the cards higher than the 4850 not meeting apple's standards to the environment. But, really, how much is a graphics card going to hurt an otherwise flawless energy efficient machine?

They've put “Think Different” and “Macintosh” on the box!

imac-unbox-03.jpg

I can only think this is a homage to the original iMac – rather than a change in strategy/branding.

For new members, think different was an old Apple advertising tag line and they used to refer to the computers as Macintosh rather than Mac i.e. Power Macintosh G3 vs Mac Pro.

I will be purchasing a new iMac.
My budget is about $1750 w/out Apple Protection Plan.

I am really torn between the 21.5 inch with the 3.33 GHZ & 8 GB of RAM or the 27 inch with no upgrades and 3.06 ghz with 4GB of RAM.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Also, it appears the printer rebate is over. It is on the sopping list advertising $100 dollars off, but when you go to the online form it says it only applies to Macs bought before October 19th. Can anyone confirm or deny if this deal is over?

Save yourself some money, DON'T BUY APPLE'S RAM! Wait and pick up the RAM from OWC. Get the 27" with no upgrades.

You can when the only Core i7 mobile part available anywhere near that clock speed cost $1054, and it’s only at 2Ghz.

That's actually irrelevant in this case. Those prices are artificial (intel marks the high end way up), and they'll have different TDP requirements for the iMac. The mobile i7 720 may very well scale to the 2.8 Ghz we see within their desired TDP limits, and those are around $350/1000. So, there's still too little information.

Blu-Ray won't survive.

1. Just so everyone knows. Blu-Ray will not make it. Not even the PS4 will end up having BR. Why? Because DVD had a long time to cement itself in the marketplace and is still extremely cheap. BR discs are not. And by the time they got to the point of lower prices and being fully entrenched in the mainstream they will be beaten to the punch by downloads. On-demand, Netflix boxes/TV integration, and a host of other rising options mean that BR will be skipped in favor of downloadable data. Many of us, myself included, prefer physical media, but like many things, that will change and downloads will get adopted before BR has the chance to fully replace DVD, so it will end up coming up short.

2. Any word on whether the remote works with the Apple TV?

I don't think Apple will sell many quad core Mac Pro's anymore, after comparing the price for the 27" quad core iMac and the entry level Mac Pro.

That's my point!

I know you can upgrade the Mac Pro but for less you can get a quad core iMac and slap in a Radeon HD 4850. The i5 750 is 90% the performance of the i7 920.

I think you're absolutely right there, and I think that that is the plan.

The Mac Pro will be seeing a refresh soon anyway...

It's the same keyboard minus the number pad, etc. It's wonderful

Bleh, not if you are crunching numbers all day. Also, it is slightly different in the area of the keys F14 to F16 and below. Delete forward is missing and the arrow keys are half the size.

Why don't they just make a Dvorak keyboard?

Please people...read the thread before posting will ya? There's already at least four folks that have told us they re-designed the remote....please no more breaking news that there's a "new" remote

No Blu-Ray! Yes I'm hung up on it.

Why not an OPTION for it? 1080p movies just take up too much of my hard drive space and my backup drive space. At 10 GB a pop it sure eats up your hard drive space quickly. Downloading that quality of a movie even with a fast connection takes a long time. Having a physical backup is something I like with something like a movie. Not to mention I would like to backup my Aperture Library on Blu-Ray and create Blu-Ray movies for my video clients. I understand it's not necessary for everyone but I do think it is wanted by enough customers to be offered as an option.

By the way I'm not buying an iMac either way but was hoping to add a Blu-Ray drive to my Mac Pro and plug it into my 1080p projector. Still no support for playback on a Mac. The timing is late enough that it is getting rotten.
