you expected something based on what you think should be released and rumors. The 13" got updated but not what you wanted, the 15 and 17" got updated but more than you want to spend. Go buy a damn PC then. I just bought the cheapest 15" with antiglare screen for under $2000 including tax and free shipping. I am very happy with this since I am upgrading from a iMac G5 that is over 5 years old. This laptop will last me for about 4 years. You get what you pay for and I believe a Mac is way better than any PC, it is for what I use it for. People complain because they can't get what they want, can't afford it or have to justify a prior purchase.

One good thing about these updates, my June 09 Macbook Pro will hold its value for a while longer so that when Sony update their Z series I can sell it and get a near as dammit free upgrade.

So I checked around in stores, and you can't get the 15" high res anti-glare; you'll have to order those online ... more waiting!!

My thoughts exactly. If I'm going to pay one of the highest prices for a notebook on the laptop market (including PCs), I expect it to be completely leading-edge. This thing is called the Macbook Pro but it's taken 6 months to get Nehalem. I expect it'll be at least another 6 months before we can even start contemplating QM, USB 3.0 and 1333Mhz. It's ridiculous, really.

There will be a slew of fanboys flooding to the defence of Apple with 'eeh but look at the extra support you get' and 'it's worth it because it's a Mac'. If you are 15 year old kid who got a crap load of birthday money, fine, splurge it on a MBP. But if you are the PRO in the Macbook Pro name and you're running a business and you have any financial sense at all you will understand why the Pro line is becoming exceedingly frustrating. Think about it logically - would you spend an extra $1000 on an OS and a trackpad? Because that's basically what you're paying for here.

Agree 100%!

A Pro machine should never be considered entry-level.

Remember that the MB 13" was renamed to PRO just because it received an aluminum enclosure, a backlit keyboard and firewire... Blame Apple for that! ;)

It's still a entry level notebook...

backlit keyboards now standard across MPB

WOOT!!! Base 13" MPB now comes with a backlit keyboard! This should me mentioned in the top post!

Really wanted a 256 SSD in the 15inch, but, can't bring myself to pay the £519 extra for it
Buy one separately and replace it yourself.

It's RIDICULOUSLY easy, and contrary to some peoples' beliefs, no, it does not void the warranty.

It'll definitely save you some cash.

listen, my laptop is a 4 year old HP with 1Gb of RAM, 90Gb HDD and God knows what processor (AMD Turion 64 but don't even know the clock)

i wanted to upgrate to a MacBook Pro and since i can't afford the 15'' i was hoping for the 13'' to be a great machine...ok it didn't get an i5, but is that really a bad deal? i'm mean, i'm gonna love it right? you are all guys with a lot of Apple things, most of you already have a Macbook Pro not bought a long time ago...for YOU it's probably what it is a MINOR update, but for people like me it's great...my laptop lasts 45min, this 10h...and etc.

so please tell me will i be able to use the new CS5 well in a low-end 13''? will i be happy with it? i'm fed up with windows...

I was so hoping that the MacBook 13" would get an iX series processor. Oh well, time to play the waiting game again and maybe, just pick up an Acer with one of those nice CULV processors that are in the same class as the C2Ds but smaller and thinner (almost like Netbooks). Yes, I know, an Acer won't run Mac OS X, but I can kind of live with Windows 7.

Hmm, OR, I can just wait for the iPads to come to Canada later this month... :)

Anyone else going that route?

I'm wondering why they still don't offer the standard res screen with the $50 Antiglare option. This is going to upset many "average" customers that didn't mind spending the extra $50 for the Antiglare. Now they're told they have to spend $150 for it? And it has to be high res? I say bring back the standard Antiglare option.

We get it Apple, you hate Antiglare screens, but face the facts, more customers than you are willing to acknowledge prefer the matte finish. Pros hate glossy and most people over 30 or 40 hate glossy. We're tired of you playing your little dictatorship game when it comes to this issue. It's time you got over yourselves.

You do not want to compare the desktop and mobile 200 and 300 lines from nVidia. They're all based on the GT21x core anyways. The G/GT 300 line on the desktop only exists are rebrands for OEMs.

GT216 for the midrange 32x/330M and GT215 for the remaining line above.

NVIDIA rebrand so much that it's not a surprise people haven't got the faintest clue what their products are and how they compare.

Anyway, the 320M is a new chipset to succeed the 9400M (48 shaders, 3x 9400M speed).

The ten hour battery life is nice as well. I'm certain that a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo is good for many people. The 2.66GHz variant isn't really worth it compared to the lower-end 15" though. The 4GB RAM is also good.

Personally I'd prefer a 13" MacBook Pro without an optical drive, and using that extra space for squeezing in a Core i3 or i5, and some more USB ports.

Hi Bas,
It flies, till you exceed the number of audio-chanels and plug-ins. and then it get's out of processor power. (run a few channels with Spectrasonics Omnisphere...) And that point is reached kind of fast with my current duo-core 3.06Ghz. Macbook Pro 17"

With kind regards
Bas

I'm curious as to why you run such a resource intensive app on a notebook computer, unless you are using the synth during live shows. Do you know if the synth is coded to take advantage of GCD? Another question is have you considered running the synth app under Windows on another brand of notebook? As a generic reference to this general thread, I have a late 2006 2.33GHz 17" MBP that I paid around $2700 (pre Obamabucks). It would cost me a good bit less to configure an i7 based, higher resolution 17" MBP today with greater battery life, higher resolution, more memory, better graphics card etc. even given that today's version is priced in Obamabucks. The i7 adds some interesting technologies at the chip level that should make this a much more powerful system that hopefully should play very well with GCD. In any case, good luck with your MBP and your synth usage.

How do you guys think 13" with 128gb SSD stacks up against 15" with 320gb hard drive (both 2.4ghz)? With that modification 13" is still slightly cheaper than 15". I know SSD makes a big difference in the performance; but from what I hear Core i5 is a lot faster than Core 2D too (and it has Turbo Boost).

So I don't know; that's one option I was considering.

Overall I think it's a decent upgrade; I just hope there were better options for upgrading to SSD.

The 13" model is complete garbage. Why would you buy that?

15 and 17 are OK, about what was expected.

WOOT!!! Base 13" MPB now comes with a backlit keyboard! This should me mentioned in the top post!

When the 13" first went aluminum, without the pro name, the base/entry level model didn't have a backlit keyboard.

Once the 13" inchers got the "Pro" name tacked on, the backlit keyboard was standard. So unfortunately this isn't new.
