What a load of rubbish!

Sorry but I've just installed 10.1.1 on my iPhone 7 without doing that.
I connected to my LAN over WiFi, went to Settings->General->Software update
No iTunes, no cable connection.
Took end to end around 15 minutes. There is no way that it downloaded 2Gb in the less than 50 seconds that it took to download.
I take it you had 10.1 then, if you had read this thread you will have noticed that if you already have 10.1.1 you wont be offered this OTA. Updates OTA are Delta they are small patches normally, if you do a patch update via iTunes it downloads the whole iOS operating system not the Delta, hence the size being about 2Gb.

If only they would release an update that would change the compatibility issue.
I updated my iPhone 6+ from 9.*** to 10. All of the sudden, the phone could no longer communicate in any way, with my desktop computer.
I found out later, that iOS 10 is not compatible with iTunes 12.2. And subsequently will not communicate with my computer at all. Even Image Capture won't recognize it.
Why don't I upgrade iTunes? Because 12.2 is as high as Apple will let my computer update to.
I have a Gen 1 MacPro2,1. So i'm stuck at OSX 10.7.5. And I guess that limits iTunes as well.

I was lucky enough to have a 2nd computer (Macbook Pro) that has OSX 10.10 on it. And was able to downgrade back to iOS 9.***

Probably they fixed some (hilarious?) typing mistake somewhere. This may justify a new build, but not a version jump.

Sorry, NOT rubbish. Here we are a full day later and my iPad Pro does NOT show the update.

Two versions of 10.1.1? Why not make it 10.1.2? I'm getting tired of being nagged about these updates and then I might get 2 for the same version? I get the impression Apple is getting like Microsoft was and Microsoft is getting like Apple.

Seems like part of the reason they did it's like this is so that you wouldn't needlessly be bogged to update to iOS 10.1.1 OTA if you already have it installed.

I have already updated to the lastest edition of 10.1.1 (150) and I must say that's it to avoid..... my battery is draining extremely fast! I regret having updated from the previous version of 10.1.1

Did you just update? Give it a day or two and see how it behaves. Double-check your settings and perhaps restart your device as well.

Updated my Mini 4 and iPhone 7 this morning. Absolutely zero change in battery usage/battery life in both.

Thanks C DM, I'll give it a try, but currently my phone is working pretty bad.... my battery is draining extremely fast and I'm not being able to backup with iCloud . I hope 10.2 (or at least 10.1.2) is ready soon...

My guess is that it fixes a problem that only occurs when updating through iTunes. That is why it is not offered over OTA.

If that is the case then there is no difference to the actual OS (and so no updated version number required), only to the installation code.
I clean restored the original 10.1.1 through iTunes recently and have had endless speaker audio issues on my 7 Plus that weren't there before when I updated OTA from 10.1. Could be related?

Agreed that it's likely an issue that only happens with an iTunes restore.

I did the update with iTunes and suddenly my id-touch is working most of the time. My 6s refused to open with id-touch. I had to give in the code. But now it opens again with id-touch.

Furthermore could this update have taken care of the way iTunes is encrypting the iOS backup? So the backup made from your phone to your computer? Or has that issue of 'easy to crack' encoding already been addressed in a previous update?

I get the feeling its probably a server side numbering update with nothing new in it. The fact I can plug my iPhone 7 into iTunes and not be offered it shows its not needed if you have 10.1.1 already via OTA.

Basically mostly just the iOS 10.1 release notes.

I believe that is the number of times that the software was built, not the number of code commits to it. There could be one commit, but if a nightly build is done, it might automatically increment the build number each time.

It varies depending on how your build server is set up, but it seems to me that most places just kick off a build whenever a commit is made. The build takes a few seconds to a minute, so the build server is ready again for when the next commit is received.

Nightly builds went away years ago - they predate me. I suspect it had something to do with compilers and computers being slower back then. Today, if it takes longer than a minute to compile on your build server, something is wrong. Either your server is doing more than just building the changed modules, or your modules are too interdependent, or your modules are too large, or you've cheaped out on the hardware for your server.

I had 10.1.1 OTA on my 6s and still got the update in iTunes.

Well I finally bit the bullet and updated my iPhone 6 from iOS 8 to iOS 10 using WiFi ota.
I notice that safari fps is slower and stacattos while scrolling where before it was buttery smooth. Hopefully they fix that.
The rest seems normal and some of my really old iOS 5 apps give me the "slow warning".
Of course iTunes 11 doesn't see my phone but I'm upgrading to 10.11 on my Mac Pro 1,1 using Pikers patch.
Assuming iTunes 12 will work then.
