Theatre Mode is definitely not new. On older versions before watchOS 3.2 go to settings and go to general then select wake screen then switch the toggle off on Wake Screen on Wrist Raise and the screen lights up and I'm now able to see the time every time I press on the screen or Digital Crown and this is on watchOS 3.1

An apparent and aggravating bug in the installer… it threw up a message saying that I had to have the watch on the charger anytime it's under 50%... yet, my watch was at 89%. I was not allowed to proceed until I put my watch on the charging cable. Now I have to wait...
You always have to have the watch on the charger to update the software

What do I do for this error?

Yep. This has always been a feature. However this is not what theater mode is. Theater mode is specifically related to the quick toggle button that they've added to the control center of the watch face allowing you to perform the action you're talking about quickly and easily without having to do multiple taps.

Theatre mode IS new. What it does may not be (it combines 2 steps, disabling raise to wake, and invoking silent mode)

Much simpler than faffing through the settings....

im assuming you cant download this over LTE? have to be on wifi. mine is slow at work.

Watch OS Update requirements are typically:
1. Watch is on it's charger the entire time the update is downloading/installing until it is completed
2. iPhone is nearby and connected to WiFi
3. Battery is greater than 50% for watch

I believe that is it...

True. And the iPhone will list the requirements before the update is downloaded.

Why does Apple bother even mentioning it has to be at 50% then? Makes no sense to me.

Because pending the update and wifi connectivity, it's a reminder to have the battery at a adequate battery level before updating, which if the update becomes interrupted, you will Brick the Watch, which now has to be sent out to Apple for repair.

With such a small battery, these updates can stress the battery and a deplete it rather quickly.

The reminder serve it's purpose for those who don't pay attention.

Actually, Apple will let you download the update before connecting the watch to power, but once you start the install it has to be on the charger. The above requirements have been my experience as well.

I'm not sure what theatre mode does which cannot already be done.

True. I see it more as a convenience feature \ shortcut. To turn off raise-to-wake requires button push and 3 taps and also there is knowing where to go for that option. Theatre mode requires a single swipe up from the bottom and tap once.

I must have rebooted ten times already
Have you also rebooted the phone also? It doesn't sound like it is communicating with the phone.... Do you have any profiles installed on both the watch and/or phone that need to all be removed? The watch profile will be in the App software to go into and remove.

Basically, it's nothing new. It's a shortcut from having to dabble through the settings on the Watch versus tapping the icon to take care of that for you.

It must be at 50% or higher AND on the charger. That has always been the case.

To update the software on your Apple Watch:

  • Update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS.
  • Make sure your Apple Watch is on its charger and has at least a 50 percent charge.
  • Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi.
  • Keep your iPhone next to your Apple Watch to make sure they're in range.
