Why does one have to update to iOS 10 to get WatchOS 3?

From what I've heard iOS 10 slows down the iPhone 6. So I'm basically stuck with WatchOS 2...

Well done Apple.

I very much regret having bought this overpriced, slow piece of rubbish.

My iPhone 6 works with iOS 10 GM with no slowing.

OK, anybody else having issues. Downloading watchOS3, said about 2 hours remaining, then one hour, then paused for wifi connection. Was connected with no issues, now says about 3 days remaining!!!!

I'm currently downloading Apple Watch OS3 with my iPhone 6 running iOS10 GM
The key seems to be to take the Beta Profile off the watch and reboot the watch. If you never installed it on the watch, that may be why it's just working for you. It worked for me. I also have the GM (and the Beta Profile) on my phone and I didn't have to change that to get the download to happen.

Downloaded in one hour and 10 minutes. After preparing and verifying, I am 1/4 of the installation "circle". This may be the slowest update on any Apple device ever (just noticing, not complaining).

I really hope this software will improve the speed of the watch.

GOT IT NOW...had to delete the iOS Beta Profile within the Watch App then reboot the watch. Update immediately became available. So if anyone has been running beta software and is not seeing the update, you might want to try this.

I've rebooted it with the beta profile, and without, and with the ios beta profile and without....nothing working for me

Yep - I had to delete the beta profile and restart the watch to get the update to show.

Luckily, the download is speeding right along (~17 min).

Im curious as to why these updates generally tend to take forever. I started about 2h ago, right when it was available and I finally managed to get to the verifying stage of the install.

This is always the same. Even the 2.2.2 update, which was literally a 20mb patch took like 20 mins to download. Then reboot etc takes some time, too.

There is something not clear to me in advertising the 911 features: does this mean that the 911 call is placed on cellular network? From my understanding you would need at least a WiFi connection or a working iPhone close-by, right? Can anyone confirm, please?

Just wondering since Apple pushes the (very welcome) 911-feature everywhere so much ...

You would need your phone nearby.
It is possible that you could do it with a Wifi connection only, but this is carrier-dependent. Support for iCloud calling from other devices is required.

See https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203032 for not-much-more-in-depth information.

THIS was my issue. Did not reboot the watch. Did that, and I'm now downloading. I'm more excited about Watch OS3 than iOS 10.

Because Apple's servers are getting slammed with iTunes, iOS 10, watchOS 3, and tvOS updates all at once. I know my AppleTV's at home are set to auto update....I wonder if these all just kick off on their own, or if Apple somehow senses when traffic levels are lower to do them?

Not bing a developer I did not have the WATCH OS3 beta on my watch so, yes, that's probably the reason.

You did better than me, 1 hr 45 min to download and then preparing and verifying another 5 minutes or so and now about 1/8th of installation circle completed.

I was in NYC Saturday, I saw "Cagney" and enjoyed it.

Download started at 11:01 mountain time. Finished downloading one hour and 54 minutes later. When I started the download it was supposed to take 55 minutes. I know it's never the case. Just be prepared.

Yes today this might be a reason but like I said, even a 20 MB update (I have a 200meg connection) takes 20 mins to download. Also today, in the same timeframe I performed 1 IOS 10 update on iPhone 6 in 1/3 of the time even tho the download package is like 4 times the size.

I like this update. I hardly ever used that side button for contacts. This app drawer concept makes a lot more sense. It seems to work well, but some existing third party apps need to be updated to support it, I think?

WARNING: If you work a lot with your Apple Watch on, especially if you wear gloves, turn off the 911 S.O.S. feature, or at least set it to swipe to confirm you want to call. I changed mine right away because I was worried about accidentally setting it off (especially since I have a toddler), and when I was framing a wall the other night wearing my leather work gloves, it set off the S.O.S. 6-7 times from accidental "holding" of the side button. Like I said, I was lucky I had turned on the "swipe to confirm" functionality or the police would have made an unpleasant visit.

The 911 function starts a loud siren once the countdown begins. There's no possible way to accidentally hold it unintentionally, unless you're deaf (the siren still blares if you have your Watch on silent). Brilliant function. It's nice to know that it's there if I ever need it. In a hostile situation, the loud siren might even scare off would be assailants.

Well so much for using it to discreetly summon help in a hostage situation!

Thanks, I was starting to freak out a little. This fixed me... downloading now.

It took me 90 minutes from start download to final reboot, and yeah.. it took a long minute. and it used a fair amount of battery.. I'm down to 80% and started with 95% and had it on the charger the entire time.
