It's interesting isn't it...that a "crime" would be reported even if the picture that was syncing was a completely innocent picture of my baby daughter crawling around without anything on!
What's even more interesting is this new system hasn't even been implemented yet to show any wrong doing so to come up with non-facts is quite silly.

If me having to make this small concession in privacy protects even one adolescent from sexual exploitation, then it will have been worth it.

And where is your limit? Should the postal service be allowed to open all letters and check their contents. Whould it be fine with you to regulary check every apartment. And do not forget, that most abuse of children happens in their family, so maybe we should question and examine all children regulary?

That's not true either. If one traffics in CSAM and uploads to icloud your photos will be hashed and compared to a database (with some threshold) that is taking up space on your phone as I understand it. The algorithm doesn't do facial recognition. And the treatment of PII hasn't changed.

So if you (the global you, not you personally) want to be exempt from scanning:
- log out of icloud
- ditch iphones/ipads
- don't engage in the trafficking of CSAM.

I am re-posting something I wrote before

- If Apple is about to do what Google does, why not go with Google services which are much better anyway? Some of us, chose Apple's inferior services for privacy.

-I keep tons of medical records and photos stored in my phone - icloud photos is OFF - I have no idea if it's legal to have my photos scanned in my device as they contain a lot of private medical information. I don't want medical data to be scanned without my permission.

- You recommend to deactivate icloud photos - I don't use it anyway but the majority of users do - Isn't Apple ecosystem a big selling point so far?

- You recommend to ditch iphones/ipads. I spent only this year a lot of money on apple devices because I chose privacy as they advertised it and because they will be supported for years - so I do want to upgrade my devices to future OS versions. Only this year I bought a new iphone and a new ipad. I am not going to burn my money just because Apple decided to kill privacy as it was initially advertised for years - and therefore affected my choice of purchase. I am glad if you are so wealthy and you have the ability to simply ditch brand new devices but many of us are not.

The joke is the very people here thinking they're accomplishing something such as posting Louis Trollman videos and ranting against Apple are actually helping Apple. Negative press on a big company gets them more media attention and in turn brings them more business. Watch Apple's 4th quarter sales results rise up high above expectations. 😁

It's not a "non-fact"...I am pointing out a limitation of the system as it has been described. This system is described as being designed to detect CP by comparing uploaded images to a database of "similar" images. So if I have a picture of my own baby girl there and there is an image on some CP database of a similar nature...then my image will get flagged. This system is designed to detect CP images, not to decide if the image is of my own child. In fact, the only way it could possibly know that it was my child is by it identifying other images of my child, something which - in and of itself - is almost 100% illegal as far as I know. So it isn't possible for it to obtain the information it needs to actually make a valid judgement in the scenario described. It is a "dumb" system that will lack context and could very easily lead to many people being investigated for CP with absolutely no validity...something which, as others have pointed out, can ruin lives regardless of the truth.

Interesting thing to think about... if a child sends a nude of themselves they would be guilty of distributing CP...

How long until this is expanded to proactively scan for questionable material?

Do people seriously not know that your gmail, yahoo mail, facebook, insta, etc. are all scanned already?

Game over bashers, Apple has just confirmed to TechCrunch that if iCloud Photos is disabled the scan won’t even run.

I submit that the people using those programs probably don't really care about their online privacy to begin with, or give it any real thought; or worse, try an justify using programs that exploit them because others use the program etc.

They do NOT scan on local level. I have medical data and photos stored locally on my phone which are not on cloud.
And if apple is about to do what Google does, why would you stay with their services? Google has definitely better anyway - Don't you think Google photos is superior to Apple photos? WIth the new information we have now, which service would you rather use?

No Mr. Cook. May you introduce that parental control, that I do not have switched on due to lack of children, but you will not check my photos "on device" for possible illicit images. There are no "illicit images". I know, you think I am a liar and would like to check it, but I will not allow that because I am not a liar. I am just a humble customer of your company - if I may...

So no iOS 15 here.

Oh, EDIT: I do have quite a wide variety of products of your company in use, which may disminish, but I am aware, that this not really interesting you. There are also quite a lot of people, frequently consulting me about technical things, they do not understand. I think, this is not interesting you as well...

So be it.
Great post. And I'm sure true for many of us here, including that many of us are the "tech advisors" to many of our friends and family.

My whole problem with this is that any of it at all occurs on the device and Apple presents it like it is an opt in situation if you do not sync to iCloud. I have no idea how much extra space each photo will take to have the metadata that is being added, but whatever that amount of storage is I resent. They should just be doing the scanning all in the cloud. They are potentially inconveniencing 100% of their customers to protect children from the extremely small number of people who have this type of content who are actually dumb enough to store the stuff in the cloud. I do not see the point in having this stuff hashed on the device.

How do you verify anything about a closed-source OS?
The problem is Apple choose to install surveillance software on devices without consent and created this problem. The user only has Apple's word on what the software does and their is no way to verify it. Mind you no other company installs this type of software on your device.

Game over bashers????? 🤣 🤣 😅Should I assume you are having a party because your team "won" ?

Anyway if you have to store your photos online, which service would you choose now? icloud or Google photos?

You will give Apple consent by installing iOS 15 and enabling iCloud.
