I'm pleased that Apple is sticking to its guns. I think anyone who is suspicious of this may have something to hide.
Child abuse is everywhere in society and the more tools we have to bring the abusers to account the better.
Many people have lot of things to hide and still it's not illegal.. Like having multiple sex partners or affairs at the same time.. I hope I am not shocking you!!

Disclaimer. I don't have multiple sex partners (or affairs).. It's an expensive sport for my wallet so I stick with my wife 😃

Good lord - straight fascist

Just "being suspicious" of the technology and "asking questions" = "something to hide"?

Should I assume that having the ability to count is a good reason to choose iCloud?
I understand that the chance of getting multiple unlucky matches is practically speaking zero. “1 in 1 trillion” in Apple’s words.

No multiple matches above the threshold = no decryption of the security vouchers = it’s like the so-called “scan” never even happened

Ah so it's in Apple's words. I am relieved.

But the chances of this catching the CREATOR of the content is very low. There are a lot of sick people out there that just find these images and save them. But they are not the ones that did the abuse or even take the picture. While its sick that someone would want these pictures, I actually want to see the creators get jail time or worse than someone just saving these pictures.

"Just trust Apple"

It's like a warm cozy blanket to ease you into the mood for some fascist snuggling

Just pull the wool over your eyes, dispense with privacy and enjoy the dulcet tones of Gruber talking over his own podcast guests while your phone slows down a quick tick for the FBI to do a fresh scan of newly taken photos to ensure "compliance"

between sync.com and pcloud.com which one do you think is better?
I was googling about cryptomator now and I read a lot about boxcryptor too. Are you experienced with the software?
I don't mind paying for the software if it works well so I don't necessarily need a free service.

Thanks a lot!
I tried Box and found Cryptomator had the better interface for my liking.

I haven't tried pcloud. Just keep in mind that if you lose your password for sync, say goodbye to your data. If that happens, Sync will delete your data upon request and you will have to create a new account.

I've been thinking of this as a trip to Costco. Whenever I go in, I have to show a card that says I belong there. Then, I have to show my card to allow them to sell me what I want to buy. And then, in an ultimate insult, I have to wait for them to review my receipt just to make sure I'm not stealing something from them.

People love Costco, but I find it terribly insulting that every time I'm there they want to know if I really paid for that toilet paper.

All that said, I really hate the "think of the children" case here, but encryption and online distribution really seems to have made that exploitation and abuse so much easier to do.

It's a real sticky wicket.

Yep. And you and I get treated like criminals with these warrantless searches while someone that is actually doing this stuff will just disable iCloud Photos.
You get treated like a criminal in airports?
Stop with these childish takes.
Sometimes societies decide it’s a good thing to do a “mass sniffing” to look for a single turd in the basket.
Doesn’t mean it will inevitably end up in a slippery slope.

You can't really combat this though. Encryption is just math. So what is to prevent these sick people from moving to Android, downloading a side-loaded custom encryption app that allows them to transfer these items?

Yeah it’s a totally believable figure if one can count.

It would be equal, for example, to 6 matches with 1 in 100 error rate each.
so are you saying that all of us who express a different opinion, we simply can't count?

other than counting that apparently we can't do, history and critical thinking are also important.

I am walking in a private establishment with their own rules. I am going INSIDE the airport and must follow their rules. Just like I can run around my house naked but I cannot run around a public place naked. However, now Apple is involving themselves in private items that they should not be doing.

So no, I am not treated like a criminal in an airport because that is the airports rules. Outside the airport, I can do whatever I want.

Authoritarian governments are going to love it!

They'd love to peer into your photos, documents and messages for "some specific things" and "remedy the situation"
Weird thing about that is that if the government choses to force them to implement that tech it will have already been possible whether not apple had been using it for good already. Apple making moves to protect children does not enable to government to be corrupt.

It’s silly to think that if apple is not implementing this tech it will somehow protect you from an authoritarian government. Only voting can stop that kind of government from invading your life.

In school after arithmetic, I learned calculus, then statistics etc etc.. but I also learned about history and critical thinking.
I’m saying I don’t fear the Astrazeneca vaccine because of the rare adverse events as much as I don’t fear Apple’s CSAM matching system because the 1 in a trillion ballpark quote sounds perfectly plausible once you’re compounding multiple rare events.

Give everyone in your neighborhood keys to your house. I really hate this "just don't talk about it if you have nothing to hide" attitude.
Give everyone keys to your house? You get that this is an opinion-less, memory-less, mindless bot checking for child abuse material, right? That’s nothing like giving a neighbor a key, that’s like taking a lie detector test where the only question is “do you traffic children?”

It's not a "non-fact"...I am pointing out a limitation of the system as it has been described. This system is described as being designed to detect CP by comparing uploaded images to a database of "similar" images.
".that a "crime" would be reported even if the picture that was syncing was a completely innocent picture of my baby daughter crawling around without anything on!"

It's a non-fact until you can show me where Apple states they will report people's babies wearing nothing as a crime because that's what you stated. It's also a non-fact until the action has been performed. Guess it never occurred to you that Apple's executives and own employees have newborns as well? They've carefully thought this out despite what the news is stating. Apple didn't become a 2 trillion dollar company out of stupidity.
So if I have a picture of my own baby girl there and there is an image on some CP database of a similar nature...then my image will get flagged.
Flagged and reported are two different things. You're stating that Apple will automatically report such a picture as a crime being committed. Also they're looking more into sex trafficking more than someone's bare bottomed babies. 🙄
is almost 100% illegal as far as I know.
Almost 100% illegal? LOL. Illegal is illegal, not almost illegal. It's like saying someone is almost 100% pregnant. It's either 100% or it's not.
