Those who are complaining obviously did not read how the technology works.

You have a higher chance of winning the lottery than Apple erroneously looking through your photos.
You obviously haven't heard of a national security letter, the USA gov can make apple scan your pictures without notifying you or letting anyone know. Once the scanning feature is there, it just needs some small changes to target anyone the gov wants, not just criminals.

Oh, damn. Another case where all these experts with PhDs and professorships in relevant fields, giving talks at Def Con & co. and consulting for companies and governments around the world have not read about how the technology works. Problem solved. What a world we live in. 😂

Yeah because Apple hasn't hired anyone with a PhD, right? *cough* John Giannandrea *cough*

But sure, let Apple implement this feature where there is ZERO ROI with all of the negative press that damages their brand just so they can....do what? Scan for illegal movies on your device in the future?

Actual facepalm.

See ya.

That's bad, there are lottery winners each week, considering all winners and not only the jackpot alone that would go into millions of errors each year. Some countries on the globe have multiple lotteries every week.

Google the chances of winning the lottery. Then read Apple's document of what are the chances of flagging your account erroneously. Compare the two numbers and then re-read your reply to see how nonsensical it is.

I'm glad you proved my point though. You absolutely did not read how the technology works.

For those who want privacy, these customers have no other choice than buying one of these Android phones who allow to install privacy orientated android firmwares that exclude all google services.
From that point of view Apple has lost every advantage over Google now.

iOS gives you zero privacy now, almost no freedom of customization of the system and the worst experience when it comes to load or unload data files from the device.

What is Tim thinking to whom he will sell after iOS 15? The only markets are north korea, china and failed muslim states.
I wouldn't call iOS to have zero privacy, not that far yet. You can still use an iPhone without these concerns if you opt out of iCloud. iPhones have existed prior to iCloud. It's just less convenient (backing up manually to your computer, transferring photos manually to your computer, etc).

iOS is still better than default Android in terms of what data being exposed to 3rd party apps.

Of course, Android has the custom ROM route for even better privacy. However, once GMS is involved if you need apps, it's kinda a wash.

I said it earlier in this thread.

I want Apple to go full E2E and force this to a public policy debate.

These are paradigm shifts in civil liberties that should be debated in the open at the political level.

This is opening the door to creating a surveillance state that fundamentally changes key things this country was founded upon. That should be discussed and decided legislatively, over a long period of time, in the open.

Corporations - at the behest of intelligence and law enforcement agencies - should not be rolling this out and making it a norm.

I won’t argue against a better solution, of which I was not aware it would exist. I’m afraid there will not be any change to the current plan unless it is forced by the government. We’ll see what happens, still some time before rollout.

A problem is that iPhones are a security risk when this is implemented. It just needs a zero day exploit unknown to Apple for a security breach and probably millions of users will be send a bunch of pictures that are in the hash lists and automatically millions of users will have a legal problem.
When you hava data like this on your phone it's a crime, even if you are not responsible for the download.
This can destroy careers and lives. The only way to prevent this is don't buy Apple!

And not just that, the problem with these kind of systems is that if you got false positive, it can ruin someone's life forever. It's one thing if the system is transparent, open for audits and public scrutiny with appeal process, but it's a giant blackbox.

“I don’t like being scanned for …”, “Oh, my privacy, my privacy!”…
Sorry guys, but in the moment you use technology and internet, most of your privacy ended, specially on those here complaining about Apple, but using Tik Tok, FaceBook, Messenger, WhatsApp, Google Apps, and anything that connects to the internet.
Want absolute privacy? Get ride of your Internet and Cell Phone.

Have a good one.

I knew there was a good reason to have switched to the Galaxy S20 FE 5G earlier this year! BTW I got all Google services disabled via Netguard, they can run locally so apps continue working but they cannot communicate with Google. I suggest anyone planning on going to Android to install Netguard No Root Firewall and F-droid as an app store.

I have had it multiple times over the years (mostly with new iOS versions) that Apple automatically started to upload pictures into iCloud by switching it on after the update.

I noticed that because suddenly there was not enough space on iCloud for my iPhone and iPad backups, because both started to send pictures into the cloud.

So nobody has control over his data when Apple will out roll this new system. You only opt out as long as Apple lets you.

Sometimes I wonder how the San Bernadino case would have panned out if they had simply waited until 2021....

You have a higher chance of winning the lottery than Apple erroneously looking through your photos.

But the stakes are much higher. This feature has the potential to ruin your whole life, even if you did nothing wrong, there are several possibilities it could fail:

- The hash algorithmen could be attacked and images with harmless content and the same hash as a image in the library could be constructed. The algorithmen is not published and can not be checked.

- someone could send images from the library which get automatically uploaded to the iCloud library, e.g. Threema messanger has this functionality and I bet others as well

- Apple could just make mistakes when reporting users

- there could be software bugs on all levels, wo all know how bad Apple software can be (after all we are talking about the company that wrote the dammed photoslibraryd daemon)

And than there is the huge potential for abusing this feature by countries like China and a lot of others.

Even with a chance smaller than winning in the lottery (whatever this is) and do not want to bet my reputation on this “feature“ working without a flaw. And always remember, even if it is unlikley that you win in the lottery, it is very likley that someone does…

That is true if you naively believe Apple's estimate of one in a trillion false positive reporting of accounts. I don't.

We're all guilty unless proven innocent in Apple's eyes. The hubris of the company is showing.

They will be scanning ON YOUR DEVICE. Will you let them in your house to search for evidence for crime, too? You phone and devices will have become snitch tools to use against you rather than friends and assistants to help you.

Zachary McCoy likely thought the same thing until he became a prime suspect in a robbery case simply for riding his bicycle past a recently burglerized home one morning...

And that was Google!

Useful information - thanks!

I got an iPhone SE 2 just about 6 months ago, so I'll be riding the iOS 14 train as far as it'll take me... but after that I'll have to re-examine how I want to move forward.

I've been gradually moving off Apple's services for the past few years, so it shouldn't be painful if a complete break makes sense (initial driver was Apple's laptop design trends, which blessedly may be turning around). Third-party solutions are often better than Apple's offerings anyway (Bitwarden >> Keychain, for instance). Sync is slightly less convenient than iCloud storage on an iOS device, but it's not THAT big a deal. But a person can keep stuff securely in the cloud without being a hostage of either Google or Apple.

No Mr. Cook. May you introduce that parental control, that I do not have switched on due to lack of children, but you will not check my photos "on device" for possible illicit images. There are no "illicit images". I know, you think I am a liar and would like to check it, but I will not allow that because I am not a liar. I am just a humble customer of your company - if I may...

So no iOS 15 here.

Oh, EDIT: I do have quite a wide variety of products of your company in use, which may disminish, but I am aware, that this not really interesting you. There are also quite a lot of people, frequently consulting me about technical things, they do not understand. I think, this is not interesting you as well...

So be it.
