Apple had to do this, they forced their hand being so public about it. And this was an intentional move from Epic to further put pressure on Apple and others. Not sure what the outcome will be, but quite sure there'll be a lot of pressure on Apple around this for the foreseeable future.

Bravo :apple:

Your move now, Google. :)

Apple is in the right.

Let’s say you make this HUGE platform for people to stand on and sell their product/services.

This platform is about 300 stories high, and anyone can take an elevator to stand on it for the world to see them. It’s the best way to sell a product.

YOU built this platform. It has built-in payment services, and a ton of other cool technologies to make your users get the most of this 300 story platform and sell their products well.

Although the users have the freedom to sell their products off your platform, and on their own website...people are complaining about the cut you take when you let users sell on your 300 ft platform.

Yet Sony’s 100 ft platform does the same thing, googles 200ft does the same thing. But somehow apple is the bad guy.

these developers have the freedom to go elsewhere.

Good. Fortnite doesn't provide third parties a way to sell within it's game. Why should Apple allow them free real-estate for customers that Apple worked to build?

Apple's store. Apple's rules.

Fortnight is not a store. It need not open itself up to sales because they built fortnight. Apple built the app store and the iPhone the problem that everyone is having is You own the phone and You should decide where you get your software from on a device You have paid for. Apple touts that they are for the consumers but that is obviously bullshiet. I side load all the time no issues. If apple actually wanted to all they need do is leverage gatekeeper for ios and anyone that wants to publish can publish and bad software can (bad meaning malware) be blocked its already been done for mac for years.

and being on the app store isnt what it used to be. So many pieces of Sheet hanging around or not been updated in 3-5 years and look horrible on new devices yet still take up space, there is no real curation.

Apple needs competition to do better another app store that would enable people to upgrade software or use crypto or anynumber of things apple wont do. Times have changed we dont NEED the app store as much as we used to.

I think it was a calculated move, Epic knew Fortnite would get pulled and is taking the short term money loss for what could be a PR win long term

I completely agree. Epic knows exactly what they're doing. The question is why? What's the end game? Obviously this will generate a lot of attention at a time when numerous governments are investigating Apple. I wonder if we'll see other popular services follow Epic's lead? The reality is, companies like Epic need Apple as much as Apple needs them. Look at the WeChat survey. No WeChat, no sale. Will gamers move to other devices because they can't play Fortnite? What if it's not just Fortnite, but a growing number of popular apps and games?

I have no idea where or how this ends, but I'm pretty sure we're looking at the early stages of the dismantling of Apple's App Store monopoly.

The game has been going downhill for about a year. Not surprised Epic is doing a greed grab. I used to play all the time with a wide range of friends. Now the only people I know who play are 12 year olds (my nephew and his friends) and they have gotten more aggressive and just add to how unplayable and boring it’s become. Thank god for PS4 and PS5 great single player games.

This sounds like baiting, EPIC know fine well how it works, I reckon this is just a marketing stunt to attract attention. No way they would have thought they could do this.

Of course, they are trying to point out how much Apple and Steam make per transaction. It's partly why both companies make so much money.
