Absolutely. If someone brings the car with low oil level to a dealership and they recommend him to replace the car, it's a fraud. Same with iPhones which Apple prefers to replace (at the customer expense) rather than fix.

Apple compared to a.... Ford Dealership? Apple is it’s own entity, and highly recognizable because of their back history with Jobs and his legacy. They’re held to a higher standard not because just of their products, because of their practices and values. I don’t think your analogy is very appropriate.

You got my point right. If Apple (as reported) instructs their service personnel to push phone upgrades over the requested service they are no better than [shady] dealership.

“Cook said Apple is undertaking and accelerating initiatives to improve its results”

Like adding a headphone jack?

Introduce a model with a headphone jack and an iPhone 6-7 form factor (but preferably with a full screen), and I will buy it in a heartbeat.

EDIT: iPhone 6-7 form factor or smaller.

The nice thing about the Apple store experience is/was the lack of the staff putting pressure on you to make a purchase. You could feel they were genuinely there to help inform you about a product and make a decision, not to just try to convince you to buy. Hope this doesn't change.
I sell cars and they do the same thing as car sales people do. They see you looking at a product, then ask you questions about your intentions with the product then they show you why you should own said product. Nothing is pressure, unless you feel pressure on your own. If you do and buy that is YOUR FAULT not the sales person's. Maybe they are just that good at their job? Very probably the reason.

Before their stuff was so good it sold itself. Now they have to try and that hurts the luxury appeal of the brand. Apple thinks of themselves like high end fashion etc

Something you won't find in these places is bring in your old handbag for a discount on a new one.
That's because there is no value in a USED handbag from LV. They only sell new ones. Walk into an LV or Gucci store and you'll see pressure. Their products for a handbad is way more than Apple is charging for a computer.

YES, this! they tried to push me to upgrade to an XR after telling me replacing my battery wasn't worth $50 to get 6% more life even though there was no explanation for the quick power drain. Android here I come.
HAHA! Then you'll be in the same situation! Something goes wrong with your Android then where will you go for repair? Back to the carrier and buying a NEW phone. Same circle. People just don't want to see it. At least Apple provides a support environment. Where are Samsung stores? If you have something wrong the carrier has to try to perform a repair or order you a NEW phone that costs you money.

Mr. Cook, iPhone isn't selling as well. What should we do?
a) Lower prices
b) Betray customers trust in Genius Bar technicians

This is just disappointing. A big advantage of Apple Stores was that you could trust they were offering you something according to your needs.

Umm Apple is a business - they do not care about offering something for our needs - if they only cared about our needs Apple would still be supporting Apple IIe’s and the shoebox Mac. Apple is only interested in getting you you to buy their newest stuff and ‘upgrade’ as soon as possiable - yearly if possiable.

There are many Samsung Stores around Europe, so I'm certain there are even more in USA as they are the direct Apple competitor, where do you think you are supposed to go for repair?, you also forgot that Android isn't Samsung. There are better Android options than an iPhone and they are cheaper too, for half the price of an iPhone, he can get a cheaper and better Android phone like an One Plus and in two years when the warranty goes out he still have half of the price of the iPhone to buy another one.

There were no intentionally "forced" upgrades. It was just a series of poor decisions trying to retain a good experience for existing customers. It's not like Apple executives directed their teams to devise a way to slow down iPhones, and include that in an update without mentioning it. Their intentions were good, but the execution was poor. Spin it however you want, that doesn't change the facts.

Apple clearly learned from that experience, since the XR is a BEAST of a phone with great battery life!

If you really believe that I have some ocean front property to sell you in Omaha NE. There is no way that Apple "forgot" to mention that their software would slow down the phone and instruct their genius' not to replace batteries.

Shame you don’t have our U.K. consumer laws, I be speaking to the manager if my first gen died after 3 years luckily enough it’s still going strong

It stung. It just spontaneously died. 3 years is unacceptable, even if it’s outside of warranty. There were no indicators that it was going to die. I have a 6 year old iPad Air that works fine. My 10 year old iPhone 3G still works as an audio remote in the bathroom. My original first generation iPod still works even if it won’t hold a charge.

Apple is stuck between being a global progressive company citizen, respecting the environment and making iPhones last longer, and the “need” to satisfy shareholders and “the bottom line”.

As much as I disagree with many things Apple has being doing lately, this is not one of them, just like every other business would do!

Last month, Apple lowered its revenue guidance for the first quarter of its 2019 fiscal year by up to $9 billion due to fewer iPhone upgrades than it anticipated, primarily due to economic weakness in the Greater China region.

trio-iphones-ios.jpg

A few months prior to the announcement, Apple began heavily promoting iPhone XR and iPhone XS trade-ins with a limited time promotion, prominent banner on its website, emails to older iPhone users, store signage, App Store editorials, and other uncharacteristically aggressive tactics aimed at boosting sales.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman previously reported that Apple reassigned some of its marketing staff to focus on bolstering sales of its latest iPhone lineup in late October, around the time the iPhone XR launched. The report cited an unnamed source who described the efforts as a "fire drill."

In a report this week about Deirdre O'Brien succeeding Angela Ahrendts as Apple's retail chief, Gurman elaborated a bit more on Apple's tactics to promote its latest iPhones, claiming that the company advised its technicians to "push iPhone upgrades to consumers with out-of-warranty devices."

Senior retail staff were also tasked with making sure other employees were suggesting upgrades, according to Gurman:We presume this refers to Genius Bar technicians at Apple Stores, but there is also a network of Apple Authorized Service Providers, some of which double as authorized resellers that offer the latest Apple products for sale.

It's unclear if the tactics had any influence on Ahrendts stepping down from her position. Unlike her short-lived predecessor John Browett, who reportedly pushed Apple retail employees to aggressively upsell products, Ahrendts focused on the experience with free Today at Apple creativity sessions and more.

Last month, Apple CEO Tim Cook admitted that "customers are holding on to their older iPhones a bit longer than in the past." In a letter to shareholders, Cook said Apple is undertaking and accelerating initiatives to improve its results, such as making it simple to trade in a phone at its stores.

Apple's reported efforts to push iPhone upgrades creates an interesting juxtaposition. On one hand, the company's environmental chief Lisa Jackson recently said customers using its devices longer "is the best thing for the planet," and on the other hand it is more aggressively encouraging customers to buy a new iPhone.

Skip to 1:23:51 mark for Lisa Jackson's comments

Whether the tactics are effective will be harder to gauge going forward, as Apple no longer discloses unit sales in its quarterly earnings report. Apple forecasted revenue between $55 billion and $59 billion in the current quarter, which would be down from $61.1 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Well I guess this explains why the “Genius” was trying to sell me a new phone late last year when I was trying to get a battery replacement (for free...long story but they did eventually do it). Apparently newer iPhones are made of “better materials” than the SE. Whatever you say, “Genius” ‍♂️

Btw I was planning on (and did) upgrading to an Xr. Him telling me to upgrade had no impact on my purchasing decision. I had been planning on upgrading to the Xr for months.

And wants to use wireless headphones? We don’t know everyone’s situation so you can spin this however. The point is the staff member is providing options.

If a consumer walked into the Apple store Genius Bar and ... the real Genius would say - your iPhone already works with the wireless headphone.

Maybe if they made phones people wanted...

I know I wouldn't mind upgrading, if Apple made something I wanted.
Amen

Only though their 6 Plus had a 1080p display, a headphone jack, and maybe larger storage. Maybe the 'sir' would not want to give up on that? Or maybe doesn't have 400 to spare?

"Costs more, does less" is the motto atm
Costs more, does less

Perfect description.

Those rushing to 's defense....
It's one thing for a tech to suggest buying a new iPhone because the repair cost will be high (which is why the repair costs are so high) yet it's another issue entirely if the techs were stating that a repair wasn't feasable or worthwhile, when in fact it might have been.

It's one thing to promote a product, but another to deceive a customer.
We'll never know how many customers got hoodwinked. It's a sure bet it wasn't only one.

When Tim Cook said the cheap battery replacement had effected sales of new iPhones, he might as well had said, “ we are not able to hoodwink as many folks at the moment...”

If I have to replace my iPhone every a year or two due to slowdown or battery decay, I would just buy an Android?

iPhone starts at around $750, that is not cheap by any means. It should do more than the competition. It should be fast and fluid (which it does)

It’s also normal for consumers to squeeze every ounce of the iPhone due to its initial high value. They want to keep it around and they expect it to perform fast much longer. I’d say 3-5 years is reasonable lifespan for a phone costs that much, just like laptops.

iOS 12 was a good thing. Speed up 2-3 generations of iPhone and make it usable again. It’s already proven that people couldn’t keep paying $999 each year for a phone, even Apple’s?

This isn't Apple's problem exclusively. Fact is - current phones do most of what people want or need. While there are always new bells and whistles - it's hard to justify the expense year over year. Or even 2 years. We live in the mobile age - but at 1K for a device - there's simply isn't enough each year or two for many to get enticed. There will always those that will upgrade. But that % has reduced.

I have heard suggestions if I ask, "What do you have for x?" "I want to take videos. What kind of steadicam do you carry?"

I have never heard a single high-pressure sales pitch from Apple retail. Go anywhere else, they're at you all the time. Know why? Most other electronics sales people are paid on commission. If you don't make sales, welcome to another job. So they natter on. They sell you worthless warranties because the commission is high. "Will you buy AppleCare on that?" They will ask that. But of course. Then you ask questions. It's generally a good deal.

I had a friend who bought an iPad mini. I told him, buy Applecare. He said, no, it's a rip-off. Then he sat down with the iPad in his back pocket! Cracked glass, useless camera. I went to the store with him. The guy said, they can't fix the camera, and the body's bent. He was over the 1 year point. He offered him a refurb of a 64 GB wifi and data iPad mini for $200, when it was new at around $700. (This is the first iPad mini, when 64 GB was HUGE.) He took it, and then yelled at me. "Why didn't you tell me about Applecare?" I did. So he yelled at Apple for charging him only $200 for a $700 piece. What would Radio Shack have done? "Sorry buddy, you didn't buy our warranty, and besides, you sat your keister on it."

He's still using that iPad, 6 or so years later.

Amazing how some don't get this. Weird. I guess some people having zero self control and could start getting the shakes with someone suggesting options. Such drama. Anything to feel like a victim. Scandalous!
I agree. People today are too pussified and want to blame anyone for their mistakes.

Warranty will be out in 1 year. Plus where do people get the idea they are paying full price for a phone? Most phones are in the same or similar price range these days. I pay monthly for my phone and when I trade it in, I've only paid for 50% of the cost of the device (interest free) and get the newest. I do not mind that situation and do not feel ripped off. I have never seen a Samsung store or Android store here in the US. Doesn't matter if they exist in Europe, we are discussing this in the US. So if your phone does break, you don't really have a recourse except to have the carrier replace it with a refurbished unit but only if you have insurance.

“We love the environment and are taking steps to reduce our impact.”

Also Apple,

“Buy a new phone every 12 months. Ignore the e-waste and negative effects of mining raw materials.”

You're probably in that group that also says this:

"What Apple isn't selling new phones to people every 12 months? Oh no they're failing, no one wants Apple products anymore."
