Even the article and experts are saying this segment has not matured yet software and hardware wise and is an unproven market. I imagine 8 years down the line when the technology has matured this could be a hit but definitely not right now. Can’t wait to finally see it at WWDC though!

I've lost most faith in Apple's ability to create practical, operable, hands-free devices. Just this morning I asked Siri to resume playing music over my Airpods, and it said I can't do that. Then I went to my phone and manually clicked play. Apple is so far behind in basic voice-controlled apps and minor AI features, that I just can't see a complex new device with an entirely new OS being anything more than a cool trinket for a few years. It's really sad.

That isn't true; AR is meant to be used outside. And we only have rumors at this stage and know nothing about the headset.
We know that it won’t be AR, but XR. Meaning the display won’t be transparent, and the outside view will instead be captured by cameras and mixed with content on the internal display.

I agreed with you 100% no one is going to be spending $3,000 on this
How do you expect them to get to the $1000 version with high value features if they don't iterate on this through generations?

They can't keep iterating on AR/VR in a lab where only their employees use and test it. Real world testing has to happen at some point, and we just call that the early adopter phase.

After reading that Apple's computer sales were off by 40% this past quarter, citing economic pressure on consumers…

Who else thinks that steamrolling out an AR/VR headset with an exorbitant price tag in this current market is a REALLY bad idea?!?

Apple's computer slump was more than its rivals (in an overall down market) because of one thing : Apple's higher prices.

Just shows how out of touch the upper level management of Apple is with what is going on with average folk.
Europe is a large part of that, where prices have risen substantially, because allegedly of the dollar rate, however Apple should have swallowed that, they didn't and here we are 40% less sales 😏

We are so excited to announce our new product the iSpy headset

Don't worry, there is nothing they don't know about you. You are already naked.

Most of the security cameras and dash cams are Chinese made. Your car's infotainment system is also Chinese made.

The Carbon Monoxide sensor right above your bed is also Made in China.

This says that you will be able to say “Siri” instead of having to say “Hey Siri”. Nothing more, nothing less. The gripes about Siri usually aren’t that you need to say “hey”.
I was going to say something similar (though perhaps with a bit more snark). The thing about this little tidbit is that is almost certainly underestimates what is actually happening.

The people who work at Apple are competent engineers. At this point, everyone who has even passing knowledge of ChatGPT knows that LLMs are the way to go. We all also see the concerns about privacy when you use the cloud-based version.

Apple has the ability to run an LLM on our phones. They have loads of data they can use to train an LLM. People would throw piles of money at them if they backed Siri by an LLM running locally. They would be grossly negligent if they weren't already working on this.

They aren't idiots and they like money. This is going to happen, sooner rather than later.

I know the same was said before the iPod and even the iPhone, but in this case I really wonder what the heck who is going to walk around with a head set?
Since I don’t normally walk around with computer monitors, this consideration is irrelevant to me.

Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Pegatron, which was believed to be the exclusive partner for assembly of Apple's mixed-reality headset, has been removed from the device's supply chain, DigiTimes reports.....
...
The paywalled report explains that Apple requested Pegatron to hand over manufacturing and final assembly operations to Chinese supplier Luxshare. This process apparently finished in March. DigiTimes suggests that the change may be related to Pegatron moving some of its production capacity from China to other regions, which includes selling its factory in Shanghai to Luxshare.

Errr. If factory that Pegatron sold off to Luxshare is the same factory they were going to use to make the AR/VR headset then this isn't much of a hot story. It just means that Apple is following the factory and not the vendor.
This is going from a "made in China" headset to a "made in China" headset. Even more a non-story if goes from made in factory foo with owner Barney to made in same factory foo with owner Fred. The 'exclusivity' cover very well be to the factory and that particular location next to where the parts for the headset are being made.

Pegatron designed the production process for the headset that has now been handed-off to Luxshare, but the company may not see the loss negatively since manufacturing for Apple requires large volume to maintain profit margins. Since Apple's headset is expected to be manufactured in low volume as both the software and hardware have yet to mature and it is an unproven market, it may be initially unprofitable for suppliers, who have pinned their hopes on the long-term potential of headset devices.

This headset was never rumored to be some bargin basement priced , "sell them below unit costs" , headset. Not sure why this would be some 'sudden' change for Pegatron on that front.

More production factiliies outside of China is probably a bigger concern than the 'low' volume of Apple's headset. Margins are tighter all around for all of these contract manufacturers and having to ramp up more facilities outside of China doesn't make that easier over the short term.

Luxshare already manufactures AirPods for Apple, alongside several iPhone and Apple Watch models. In the future, the company is also expected to help supply the iPhone 15 Pro Max, upcoming MacBooks, and even Apple's long-rumored electric vehicle.

Apple Car ... chuckle like that was going to ever be relatively high volume product. Made-in-China Apple Car with made-in-china batteries... like that is going to work in the USA. As much as folks grumble about vapor ware AR/VR headset ... Apple Car is worse. Much worse (an even bigger billion dollar boondoggle. ).

FACE 3: This is not the way.

FACE 4: Take heed and go no further.

FACE 5: Beware. Beware!

FACE 6: Soon it will be too late.

HOGGLE: Yah. Don't pay any attention to them. They're just false alarms. You get a lot of them in the labyrinth. Especially when you're on the right track.
