Really? I watched a game a few weeks back and thought the presentation was great. I even checked the live discussions on different subreddits (for each team and the MLB sub) and people were pretty positive about it. I don’t think anything can beat MLB TV with their broadcast/audio options but as far as networks go I really enjoyed watching the game on Apple.
I can’t rewind or record on Apple TV+, I can on Hulu with Live TV which is where all the games I watch now are.

The general consensus (and my feeling as well) is that the graphics and camera work are the best in baseball, but the commentary is lousy.

Ugh. Such a waste of money for Apple. If there were that many people wanting to pay for this then the NFL would just do it themselves. It’s not like a streaming service is that hard to build these days.

I imagine Apple is thinking that this will bring in the bro dude market and get them to start paying for Apple’s services. And maybe they’re right. But it just feels dirty to me. Foot ball is literally the worst sport. The people who play it all go on to have traumatic brain injuries. It just feels very non-Apple.

Like here’s your elegantly designed device, a wide variety of music, a huge range of creatively designed third party apps… and a sport where people run into each other in a strategic manner while causing brain damage they’ll never recover from.

At least Soccer the players aren’t generally damaged for the rest of their lives. (Also foot ball is so boring to watch!)

(I also realize the Mac was literally launched with a super bowl ad. I just hate football it’s a dumb sport and quintessentially American. Because nobody from another country would think it was a good idea to professionally assault each other while not acknowledging it’s just a big fight with rules that make no sense.)

MLS will be a separate charge, they announced. MLB is free for now. Not sure about August. NFL would definitely be an add-on of some type, but maybe not at the beginning.

I agree. I think most people just don’t want to watch something without their local broadcast crew which is understandable. Love the TV+ broadcast. Feels like you’re at the game.
Those 25 people that watch MLS are going to be upset by that news

I wonder if DirecTV made a deal with the NFL to keep the announcement quiet until December so as to not hurt dish sales? Anyone who buys a dish this summer just for football may be surprised to find out that DirecTV is not even a bidder.
The deal is for next season fall 2023 - Jan 2024.

Thats what you think and you are CLEARLY in the minority. Over 100 Million people tune in to watch Super Bowl. Enough said.

Not Apple related but losing Sunday Ticket will probably be the last nail in the coffin for DirecTV.
They’ve been steadily moving people to their stream service over the last year. It’s quite good quality with a competitive price. Needs some menu optimization. Sunday Ticket isn’t available here, so there was no doubt they were going to pass on Sunday Ticket. They've been getting their people used to not having it for a lil bit.

There is no way this will be free with subscription. NFL Sunday Ticket rights will cost nearly $4-5 Billion per season. It could be cheaper than what DirectTV charges but not free.

BTW, Amazon is paying $1 Bill per year for rights to Thursday night games only.
Then it’s going to be a losing proposition all the way around for Apple - one of their competitors will get it and run with it… Apple has to find a way to justify what they are charging people for… Apple TV has the lowest amount of content than any other service out there... and they charge a premium for some hardware to hook up to a TV with a fancy remote. What incentive do people have to sign up for Apple TV? Obviously there isn’t a lot of incentive because the subscriber base and content is evidence of that. Lets face it - Apple over chargers for a lot of things… and some of it is in your face, screw you, we laugh at you fools, types of way… the $7+k display monitor/stand being just one example of dozens that can be made.

If Apple doesn’t start providing some value for the money on products and services it’s asking people to spend on, then it will not grow things in a way they need to grow. With the economy going into the tank people are starting to cut some of their discretionary expenses, and it’s services like Apple TV that are the first things to get slashed. Look at Music and other services they provide to see evidence thats already happening… Apple is by far the cash richest company this planet has ever created… other companies are pretenders compared to Apple… having to use stock and other accounting tricks as a prop to support its public valuations… Apple is awash with cash, and can afford to do a lot of things, and the NFL Sunday Ticket for Apple TV would be nothing to them by way of expense when all things that it will benefit from is also taken into consideration… especially with the “Apple Brand” being the “brought to you by” marquee every Sunday…

Apple has one chance to get it right… if they fumble, one of the other teams are going to score and Apple will be the loser in this one… still relying on the next greater fool to buy those over priced charging blocks, cables, and upgrades to computer components at the point of sale… amongst many other things…

Oh, this is American Football. Where you hardly ever kick the ball. I see.
National Football League (NFL) — $13 Billion
European football is by far the most popular sport in the world. However, American football is the most profitable. The National Football League (NFL) is valued at $13 billion, which is how much they generate every year.

European football - a.k.a. Soccer is a drinking mans sport… where they tend to have drunken stadium wide riots every so often… fun stuff! I look forward to the World Cup coming back to the U.S. in 2026… thats always a good time! Too bad we share it with the rest of North America too… a huge geographical area, compared to say, um, a place like Qatar.

Its all about the money…

I believe Directv charges around $349 for a season and $49-99 for another set of features like Red Zone. What I think people are missing is this won’t be an Apple broadcast. It will be games from Fox and CBS that are out of your local market. This won’t get you Thursday, Sunday night, or Monday night games.

There has also been consideration that two deals will be available. One for streaming and a second for cable/satellite.

Thats alot of words, but let me break down:

1. You don’t have to have Apple TV hardware to watch Apple TV, so you are inaccurate.

2. Apple doesn’t have to give you anything for free.

Nobody is forcing you to watch Apple TV. If you don’t like the contents, then don’t subscribe.

Apple has many ways to make this work. They are preparing for iPhone subscription model, and they could tie Sunday Ticket to that subscription package, for example.

For me personally, if Apple increases Apple One Premium from $30 to $35-40 range and include Sunday Ticket, that will be enough to jump right in.

Huh? Liverpool FC alone is worth 500 million. One club. 13 billion is nothing in kicking football.

Dear god no. Please NFL stay as far from Apple as you possibly can. They ****ed up MLB completely. The same will happen to you.

What hasn’t been noted is whether this applies to world rights. I’m not a US sports fan but if there’s a price increase to any existing tiers or the content isn’t available outside of North America it won’t seem fair.

By way of comparison apple did the deal for MLS to be available world wide and presumably at no extra cost.

And I’d reckon that Apple could sell commercial breaks to recoup some of that revenue.

Perhaps they have now realised that live sport is what will drag a high number of people with disposable income into the Apple TV plus world without needing to spend a fortune on traditional content which takes less time to watch and people could unsubscribe after they have seen a movie or a limited series.

Just look at how Sky Tv prospered after a rocky start in the U.K.

Perhaps, for example, apple might look to see if Formula One rights could be coming up soon.

Good point! However, I suspect setting up a quality mass streaming service isn't quite trivial. I've never tried to do it myself though, so might be wrong ;)

I feel like it was more about trying to influence culture, and getting the dude market to trickle over and watch the other "culture" shows.

Soccer players were damaged a birth ;)

Almost every country and culture has a collision sport of some form or another. American football evolved from rugby in the first place, which is spread around the world. Ireland has both rugby and two of its own: hurling and Irish football, which are quite savage. Australia has rugby and Australian Football. And so on... Sure, American football hasn't quite taken off in any other country, largely because of the pre-existence of similar sports, and because American football has a complexity of team sizes, uniform requirements, plus the weird thing with each team having a defensive, offensive, and special teams. It is played in other countries though. One of my old rugby team mates here in Oz switched to it, but he's the only guy I've ever met who played it. The numbers were so low that he became a state rep soon enough, and he wasn't even a first grade rugby player at club level.

Men love playing it because it is like war, but without the dying. Women love watching it, because it's like war.

Regardless, you have a serious prejudice against a sport of which I can only presume you are neither a player, nor a spectator. I'd ask why you care what other people do with their leisure, but I suspect it's more about not liking the masculine, tribal, culture of it, rather than wanting to intervene into other's choices of self harm (yes, I have seen the movie "Concussion", and do suspect I have some lesser effects of similar from 10 years of playing rugby). I've been both a participant, and an outsider of that culture, so can see both sides. From a sociological viewpoint, I see it as merely evolutionary tribal survival instinct. It's powerful stuff, and can't be simply wished or hated away. Anyway, I hope you come to peace with this issue.

I think that getting Sunday Ticket would be a very wise decision, I see live sports as the only way for a streaming service to remain competitive and keep people subscribed; there's only so much "quality" content that you can create - and "quality" is highly subjective -, but, with live sports, you're really changing the game, live sports, due to their nature, have almost no competition, especially the NFL, at least in the US.

Now, imagine if they also get Gronk and Pat McAfee as commentators, or just give them a show, that's if Pat doesn't go to Amazon Prime Video.

If Apple also wants more €€€, they can get the rights for soccer in Europe, in most countries carriers price it astronomically high, sometimes for crappy service - DAZN in Italy -, either them or Amazon, even though Amazon's live streaming is really delayed, anyway, in the meanwhile, I'm still not really caring about soccer and I'm renewing my Game Pass International and, yes, I'm ready for the hate from US NFL fans 😜

On a more serious note, if they do end up getting the NFL, they'll have to invest heavily on infrastructure, they'll need a monstrous amount of bandwidth to support it.

I think the NFL is going to be an add-on, it's too valuable to be in the same basic price, the hike would be steep.

I don't think it will affect users from outside the US as internationally the NFL has its own streaming service, the NFL Game Pass International, which is absolutely awesome.
