Here's an idea Apple... Why not make your own manufacturing facility, wherever you like?

Sitting on all those billions must be itchy.

That's what Apple used to, back in the 90s. And they almost went bankrupt. Manufacturing is not an easy task. Better left to companies who specialize in it.

Some locations have better quality control than others. I wonder how this will impact.
Trudat. I remember 2 decades back when I fixed Macs for a living. The Macs assembled in Mexico, the screws were heavily torqued and the cases were tighter than Uncle Scrooge's purse strings. Those assemble in China, came apart with little effort. The ones assemble in California were a mixed bag.

India. The future of everything is India.

Or maybe, darkest Peru...

The problem is India doesn't really seems to want these kind of Jobs. For reason I cant comprehend. They have been saying no to every request. Such as infrastructure, electricity, clean water etc. I would have thought this would be a great chance for the Government to invest into it. But nope, they want Apple and other player to contribute.

What you said could not be farther away from truth. India is making efforts specifically to get these kinds of jobs. It is heavily investing in infrastructure, electricity as well as clean water. It is also cutting red tape which is reflected by its climb up the ladder in ease of doing business rankings. Obviously lot of room for improvement, but the work has started long time ago.

Not really they are just gonna move production to a different Asian country

Sure everyone would be happy about iPhones being manufactured in the USA when they become something only the wealthy could realistically buy
Exactly. They’re putting pressure on China, the economic bully of planet Earth. Tariffs work.
[doublepost=1560961207][/doublepost]
That's some leap.

That said, I can't stand that yob in the White House but have to say given China's authoritarian government and human rights abuses, I'd be happy to see Apple move production entirely elsewhere.
This is exactly what I’m referring to. China is the economic bully of the world. The tariffs that only Trump has the balls to enforce are putting pressure on Earth’s bully. Trrffs wrk.

Sure, if you are ready to pay three times the money for an iPhone or Mac, why not? Same counts for much of the stuff you purchase - clothes, technology, whatever.

Once China will get to expensive in terms of costs, production will move on. But surely not to the U.S. or Middle-Europe.
i'm ready .

You did note the article said Apple was responding by moving production to other Asian countries besides China, not building US factories, right?

Or are you suggesting that Apple *should* start building factories in the US since this article says they are merely moving production out of China to other countries besides the US?
They should start building factories in the US

But the US isn’t one of the countries under consideration so...
So? China is sweating for the first time in decades. And justly so. Tarfs wurk.
[doublepost=1560961452][/doublepost]
Tariffs worked in the sense that it created many jobs in India and Vietnam using US taxpayer dollars.
Tariffs worked in the sense that someone finally had the balls to stand up to the economic bully of planet earth. And now that bully knows that they can’t get away with murder anymore. Tariffs work.
[doublepost=1560961524][/doublepost]
Uh, for who? Did you see the US as one of the potential destination countries?
The US has for the first time made it clear to China that they ain’t gonna take their sh*t anymore. And China now understands that.

Sorry Donald, no US jobs. Trade imbalance with China will be transferred to other Asian countries instead. BRILLIANT! FINANCIAL GENIUS!
Yes, sending them to countries who will treat America fairly in trade agreements and not stoop as low as stealing America’s IP. BRILLIANT! FINANCIAL GENIUS!

Apple can handle it. They have to or nobody will buy their phones anymore.

Good point but this may not be strictly financial, am I 100% wrong? just curious.

Why do most believe this is purely financial and job related? blinders need to be removed.

Mr. Cook is a supply chain genius, I don’t think you need to concern yourself with Apple diversifying “properly”. If you know anything about Cook, you know it’ll be done efficiently, intelligently, strategically and cost effectively.
No he’s just possessed with greed.

What else would it be related to??

My point proven.

And yet, we always have shortage of phones, long delivery time.. every quarter.

Dude. Agree.

But, sadly, purchasing cheap Chinese goods has become an ingrained habit.
Amazon is the standard-bearer. And, like any drug-habit, it will continue unabated.

[It saddens me as how much our middle-class has caved economically when production moved to cheap labor.]
A beautiful example of how the Democratic Party works it’s magic. Brainwashing people into believing they are powerless and no longer have the ability to make their own choices.

It will MAGA. Doesn’t matter what country the jobs go to as long as it ain’t China. Anyone will trade more fairly with the US than China will. The more jobs we get out of China, the better. China has proven itself to be a selfish, economic bully.
This 100%. All these people hating on the Tarrifs because it wont transfer jobs to the US are missing the point.

Tariffs work.

Yes? How does moving from China to other Asian countries improve the US economy or bring more work to Americans? Obviously it doesn’t. Sad that certain people, despite millennia history proving the contrary, want still to believe so much that history can be turned back like a clock that they are ready believe to silly promises that many infamous man have already done to people many times only with the same final result.
