They absolutely could make the phones in the US. They’d have to cut their profit margins, but it is doable. We shouldn’t be okay with them underpaying Chinese labor as it is.

China is rallying and promoting buying China goods. Americans should really be doing the same thing.

We should expect an American company to contribute to our economy. Create the jobs here. Pay your damn taxes.

So the tariffs are not about protecting US jobs (that was obvious anyway), its about economic warfare against China.

How is one different from the other?

So looks like the America First policy is working great.

It is actually working better than anyone realizes. China is an athoritarian regime and has become an economic powerhouse. It amazes me how many people on this forum don't understand what a thread this is to democracy.

By forcing manufacturing out of China and into smaller countries it will force the smaller countries compete with each other for the business. This will in turn allow the United States to win consessions in regards to working conditions and balance of trade issues.

By requiring these countries to abide by the same regulations as U.S. companies, it will make U.S. companies more competitive around the world.

Unfortunately, it seems all the Trump haters want to do is bash Trump. First they bash Trump for his authoritarian nature and his human rights abuses on our southern border then they bash Trump when he takes on an authoritarian regime know for human rights abuses.

For the record, I actually admire the Chinese. You know that the Chinese will always act in what they perceive as their best interests. Americans, on the other hand, won't hesitate to sell each other out for a quick buck.

Why not bring it to the US? Oh wait ...

Because workforce labor costs are too high. It's very hard for any company to compete with the low cost of the Chinese market.
[doublepost=1560988213][/doublepost]
Tariffs work.
Really?! So you've seen the damage that the Great Idiot has done to the world economy with his chest beating. Tariff trade wars don't stay confined within the borders of the two countries slugging it out - it goes global.

But no USA jobs. And what about iPhone prices?

No, those people want to pay 4 times for patriotic iPhone. Probably more.

iphone prices have been rising, and will continue to rise. this will have little to do with tariffs and more with apple's greed. look at the $1k monitor stand, and the base $12k mac pro model.

The tariffs are putting China in its place. And anyone who says that’s not an issue is an idiot. The world’s economy will ONLY benefit in the long run from this. China is the crooked, lying bully of the world.

The point of tariffs isn’t to being jobs back to the US. People need to understand that the point is to send China the message that the US ain’t gonna let them keep bullying people around like they have been for decades, and it’s working.

How many years have you lived in China for?

Apple has been and will continue to be the perfect "useful idiot" playing perfectly into the Communist Party of China's (CPC) long term strategy. Apple has been regarded as the high end luxury manufacturer, but has a limited global market share. The CPC relies on Apple's US market share because it "funds" Apple's tech R&D investment - this technology, paid for by the US consumer, ultimately gets transferred to China. The CPC has had its "fingers in the pie" of every Apple product manufactured in China. This has allowed China to accomplish its goals of technology acquisition without paying the associated costs.

This has resulted in a tremendous transfer of not just wealth, but the method of producing wealth, out of the USA - something the leaders of Google, Apple, et.al. see as an accomplishment.

These companies are run by the "Tech Mafia" which has taken notice of how the Communist Party of China (CPC) operates, and have implemented a similar operational structure within the US tech industry. The CPC operates by imbedding CPC members on the boards and upper management tiers of Chinese companies. These Chinese companies may appear to have "western style" management, but they are run by the CPC.

This is why Huawei's CFO arrest is such a big deal - she's "The Money" connection between the CPC and Huawei.

US "Big Tech" has implemented their very own "shadow party" similar to the CPC by embedding their "members" within everything from "gate keeper" Venture Capitol firms all the way up the structure to the boards and upper management tiers of major US corporations. The US government and major political parties are practically subordinate to this USA tech mafia. US tech companies lobbying for Huawei, which is really a "ketou" to the CPC, proves this. The tech mafia actually admires the CPC's control, and have placed their own desire to have such control above any broader US national interests. This in turn plays directly into the CPC's plan to attain global dominance without a "hot" war - and a tactic taken straight out of Sun Tzu's book "The Art of War".

Never before in human history has the creation so much wealth been contained by so few people as in the current US tech industry. For the last hundred-ish years or so (since “Vladimir read a book on Karl”) there has been discussion and some thankfully failed experiments with how to organize the “ownership of production” for industry. Today’s current tech ‘titans’ have undoubtedly been exposed to this thinking and have begun implementation of an upgrade - Version 2.0.

Version 2.0 strives to redistribute the means of producing wealth globally. This would seem like an admirable goal, and some western European countries have been able to create systems on their own - but these countries have advanced rule of law that enabled sustainable creation of wealth. China is not a rule of law country, which is why they must resort to foul play.

US tech leaders have placed western society at great danger by their misguided thinking and actions.

The Communist Part of China (CPC) is an authoritarian dictatorship that censors and thereby controls its own citizens. But the CPC cannot control people outside of its fiefdom - not realizing this has become their greatest error and will lead to the CPCs downfall.

US "leaders", including government and private industry, have also failed miserably in protecting their citizens from hostile foreign actions. But "We the People" now understand this and are free to make changes in our government, and industries. We do not live behind a "Great Firewall" so we are able to equip ourselves with accurate information to take informed actions.

And here's where China has created a huge mess in this regard:

https://www.scmp.com/tech/article/2...a-meng-wanzhou-told-staff-one-may-accept-risk

Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei quote:

“The US has very strict compliance policies, but American companies are used to it,” Ren said. “Nobody dares to flout the law, it has become a habit, and they can still achieve high speeds. Our company has not yet formed this habit, that is why communication costs are too high.”

This quote from the CEO of Huawei damages all credibility. He's directly saying Huawei uses NON-compliance to maintain a cost advantage over competition. The US walked away from a trade deal because China refuses to implement laws that enforce compliance - This means China is NOT a "rule of law" country - because - It's authoritarian dictatorship and doesn't really need laws anyway.

Also consider:

https://thediplomat.com/2019/02/the-real-danger-of-chinas-national-intelligence-law/

Another Danger of China’s National Intelligence Law is that it essentially "conscripts" Chinese nationals in a similar manner to how Japanese nationals were conscripted during world war 2. This ended very badly for Japanese citizens in many Japanese cities (and specifically two - if you know history) at the end of the war.

So:

1. Chinese companies willfully engage in non-compliance, and even make it "company policy" to do so.
2. The Chinese Government requires their citizens to engage in spying.
3. The US Government has been derelict in their duty to defend the US against hostile actions perpetrated by China - and - US Industry leaders have been profiting from this dereliction.

This situation has created justification for US INDIVIDUALS to take direct action against Chinese interests, and Chinese nationals.

China is capable of protecting its interests within its borders, but China doesn't even have a "Blue Water" navy, so this leaves their global interests and expatriate citizenry (spies) vulnerable.

So, Ren Zhengfei, Xi Jinping, et al.: You believe willful non-compliance is acceptable, so don't whine about China's "Hurt Feelings" when some VERY creative non-compliance adversely affects your interests, or the interests of your country and citizens. Remember: You started this, but people in the US have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, even in the absence of effective government.

This is good news. The communists running China are delusional and working towards an antagonistic relationship with the West.

If I had to choose from the list in this article I am hoping iPhone production comes to Mexico. It is within NAFTA.

How many years have you lived in China for?
You don’t have to live in China to know anything that I just stated.

Does Apple currently fly the phones east from China over the Pacific, or west over all of Asia, Europe, and the Atlantic? If the latter, and it's gotta be Asia, then maybe Mumbai, India, which is on the coast. Then use recycled aluminum electric ships to zip up the Suez, with Tim on a turret gun staring down the pirates, and environmental big boy pants here we come.

iphone prices have been rising, and will continue to rise. this will have little to do with tariffs and more with apple's greed. look at the $1k monitor stand, and the base $12k mac pro model.
The point here is not whether iPhone price will rise, it’s how much they will rise? 10% every year or 2000% overnight? This is a huge difference.

First, your response is terribly worded and very difficult to understand. Perhaps follow the example I have set in keeping things simple. Second, it’s not about getting jobs back to the US. As I’ve already stated, all that matter’s is getting the jobs out of China. In case you don’t know, China is the economic bully of planet Earth, that is the world which you and I live on, right? They have stolen American IP with no consequence or remorse and they engage in unfair, anti-competitive trade agreements throughout the world, including with the US. Getting jobs out of China is what matters. Getting those jobs to the US not so much. The US will benefit from this because it will enable them to lessen reliability on China’s unfair trade, and they will then be able to engage in FAIR and HONEST trade agreements with the countries to which these jobs have gone. The tariffs are working. Sorry.
If China is such a big bully what makes you think they won't bully their neighbors as well, what makes you think China won't have any influence on south east Asian countries and that US will get into "FAIR" and "HONEST" trade agreements with these countries?

Move out of China - lower their production by 50% of current levels by 2050. I am not anti china but they need to realize they're more like Russia in the end and not a true US competitor. It takes lots of time and money but other second/third world countries can replace China to become the new "China" in terms of productions.
What's funny is that you don't realize that's not the case and it won't be the case. China is the biggest and most capable competitor US ever had. A competitor that is totally immune to western manipulation, a competitor that will fight to the end and won't be afraid to make sacrifices. There's a clear reason why communism has survived in China when it mostly fail in the rest of the world.

What you are ignoring is the fact that China truly is a manufacturing powerhouse and I do mean manufacturing no assembly because Vietnam or Malaysia simply won't be able to replace China's manufacturing prowess any time soon.
Most of the important electronic components will still be manufactured in China even if assembly jobs move to other countries in the assembly facilities which most likely will be controlled by Chinese corporations anyway.
Also Apple is totally replaceable for the Chinese so unimportant overall for China's economy and tech plan.

Apple is becoming the next Samsung in China's smartphone market anyway.

Being on the move is always good..

But if price is gonna go up as a result, forget it... Not gonna pay more, just because some company decides they hate the "China war"

Apple will then have a different a ™️

Every cultural will sell each other for a quick buck, don't kid yourself. Overall the Chinese are quite united, and when it comes down to it, Americans are very much united.

However, don't think for a second it's that simple that democracy is amazing and the CCP is not. There are advantages to both. For a country as large as China with a cultural this diverse, you have to see that if China was democracy it would be where India is now. Although India has developed quite well, but its national infrastructure is behind. Corruption is rampant and for a foreign company to enter the market it's much harder than it is to enter China. But they're democratic, so we'll overlook all that? Even the Chinese people know that the government in China is becoming a little dictator-like, especially President Xi and his policies. I agree with that. But without the CCP, China would not be where it is now. There are simply too many under-educated in the populace to make the prompt decisions for a democracy to work in China; at least in the short term.

The way Trump acts is way too extreme. He doesn't seem to have filter or even basic common sense. Trump deserves the bashing he gets; he's the President. Technically speaking every president got bashed, but Trump seems to get a lot of it. I actually voted for Trump in the last election; I evaluated whether Trump or Clinton would have been good for my beliefs and understands. I really dislike the both of them; it was a choice of lesser evils. It's not a simple as left vs right, man vs woman, that some people make it out to be. I am very conservative, but even then I see that Obama was quite good president; it's not black and white for me.

Finally why should the rest of the world live by US standards. What makes us "right?" Why should China let only US companies become competitive around the world. China's actions dictated by history; they didn't last three millennia by lying down and living by someone else's standards. If anything by the actions have the US has taken against China, it's more the reason they won't let themselves be bullied will want to build up both their soft and hard power.

You don’t have to live in China to know anything that I just stated.

Actually it does help because then you don’t have a biased perspective ;) It is always helpful to be able to see things from both ends rather then just one end ;)

You also said that China is the crooked lying bully of the world. Trump has given the US this image around the world as well with all the lies he has told and bullying he has done ;)
