In his interview for Triumph of the Nerds in the 90s, Steve Jobs was asked what went wrong with Xerox. He said, in effect, they let sales people run the company rather than product people. Cook isn't a product person either, he's a management and operations person. Without product people they're running out of cool stuff to manage. (Disclaimer, I just set up my XR this morning, and so far I DO like it. Notice I didn't say "love it." Only time will tell if I'll be glad I stuck with Apple for one more product cycle.)

I don’t think they mind. Since they released the Apple Watch, they seem to liken themselves as a luxury brand. When the relative profit margins are so high you don’t have to sell that many phones compared to others. It’s like they’re happily purging the people that aren’t going to just spend on everything and anything.

If you’re full in on Apple, which many people are, you’re going to be replacing an iPhone, iPad, AirPods, watch, dongles/chargers, MacBook, iMac every now and then. That’s a lot of profit coming in from one person.

All of which is fine, it’s not like there aren’t any alternatives.

Except Apple stock has been in a free fall for the past couple of weeks. People may claim the articles are meaningless, but the stock market is reflecting the concerns of Wall Street, and conversations about the marketing strategy of Apple are part of it. The entire market is struggling but Apple was used to bucking those downturns, and that is no longer the case.

I find it interesting that so many people say iOS is better but won't pay for it. They want Apple to set the price of their flagships to be lower than Samsung's flagships. Why should apple do that when people already said iOS is better.

I'm not sure anyone is saying that the iPhone should be cheaper than samsung's s9. but currently the S9 is almost $280 cheaper than the iPhone. the S9+ is $150 less (These are all base models at base storage compared the iPhone X). Only the Note 9 starts at $999 and it's a low volume niche device.

I don't think anyone is thinking that the iPHone should be cheaper than the S9 or S9+, but it also is a bit of a stretch that it starts at 999, before you factor in even the + size or storage upgraes

I mean ... just look at those prices in Europe. They have always been higher but at least in the past they would „only“ replace the dollar sign with a € but now they add over 100€ ON TOP.

Getting it on contract barely helps. I remember getting my top of the line iPhone 6 for 99€ on a 49€ (24 months) plan. Now it’s like 399€ on a 69€ plan! Insane

On that note, i have yet to see a single XR in the wild. I do see a lot X tho

Final days are coming to a end for apple charging arm and a leg for a device... they better wake up!

Agreed. The prices are unrealistic now because the competition is so good. However, people cannot complain too much about the price because it is the consumers who have brought us to this point.

Absolutely, consumers are least affected by price escalation because they have far too mant better alternate options at far superior price-value proposition. Also right now desirability is lost for consumers and they don't even bother to look at Apple products since it is prohibitively exorbitant prices.....they thank their stars for that and Apple, that leaves them with enough cash for something else....

Apple can increase prices of their products to whichever margin they want to sell, consumers won't be affected at all.

Maybe in US it is different story.....

Maybe it’s time to think different about pricing.

I’m a diehard Apple fan but I’m holding onto my iPhone 6S. It still works great.

Maybe Apple shouldn’t have sold me that affordable battery replacement ;)

More seriously, maybe this tired story is finally true, and Apple hit the ceiling on iPhone growth and profit.

I mean they can’t raise prices indefinitely to make up for stagnant sales... heck just sell one iPhone priced at a trillion dollars.

Although as I type this, I’m thinking, Apple has proven ‘me wrong every time so far...

I wonder if it matters to anyone that Apple develops and maintains their own operating system. They have an entire platform. You could say a portion of each iPhone sale goes towards that.

Meanwhile... Samsung took the easy route and let someone else build them an operating system (Google)

It sounds worse when Samsung charges $900-1000 for a phone and they don't even have to make the operating system!

:p

The iPhone XR is just too big, also too expensive for what it is.

The XS is way too expensive as well, i would never play £1000 for a phone, there is nothing it can do for me that will make it worth the much.

Even the iphone 8 is way over priced for what it is, it is old technology nowadays.

This is how they should be priced.

XR = £500 (but needs to be smaller)
XS = £650
XS MAX = £750
8 = £380

As a customer, I see this as a win. I would rather buy devices that are designed to last as long as possible. And for a variety of reasons, I buy most of my services from Apple already (except for ebooks/comics -> Amazon); so no loss for me there.

Interesting point of view. Macs have T2 -chips, you can't fix them outside Apple certified repair shop, so the repair costs are bananas. Of course you could buy AppleCare, but that ain't free either. Did someone mention that macbooks are glued together? That's like 0 -point of repairbility. Apple makes long lasting hardware? Wouldn't guess that I look at Apple exchange repair program that are ongoing right now.

When you have a Phone that is heavier, not as premium looking, not with a better Camera than your competitor's LAST model, offer less Internal storage at base point, no Fast Charges etc... and Charges $300 more.

Apple is quickly losing its fans.

I went Android long ago, not locked into the Apple ecosystem, better hardware and features. I now have the Huawei Mate Pro 20. 40 megapixel camera, 3 lenses including ultrawide, inbuilt fingerprint and face ID, bigger battery. Long ago being locked into Apple's world made sense, because the tech was so much better. Those days have left long ago.
Unfortunately it is true. Now only Cook & Co need to see reality. Something I don't believe is happening soon :(

saying this makes you seem like you don't actually know what goes into the changes that Samsung does to Android. it's one of the heaviest forked branches on it and they put millions into R&D and development on the Android platform. Most of the hardware features that come to Samsung devices have to be written by samsung in the OS. Lots of stuff that Samsung devices do don't have parity features in the android core.

in addition to the heavy graphical modifications and changes (it's pretty far from stock android).

then there's features like Dex. Or multi-window support. the list really goes on are al things that are developed in house by Samsung. Hey, i'm not saying that they're great at it. Their software still tends to be one fo their biggest issues. But to claim that Samsung doesn't do anything with buildng out their OS is ignorant.

Y'all need to cut the price of your "incredibly overpriced" phones to just be "very expensive" again. Personally I just need an iPhone that will roughly keep up with the increasing software demands. I don't need a bigger phone, a better screen, FaceID, etc... But Apple does not offer such a phone.

Innovation is fine, but it would be nice if Apple offered "less innovative" and more affordable versions of their products, especially considering that all other alternatives involve adopting a completely different operating system with completely different ecosystems.

The majority of people would rather have a cheaper phone than one with 3 freaking cameras and an edge-to-edge OLED screen. Let rich people buy the best of the best, but have something for the average person, too. Apple has always offered more affordable options of all of their products. Think of the iPod Shuffle, the white MacBook, the old Mac Mini or the iPhone SE. It's only recently, in the past few years, that they completely stopped doing that, releasing more expensive products and discontinuing all of the less expensive ones.

I'm SO glad Apple has clued up fans like yourself as no way they can figure it out for themselves nor have business analysts on tap to tell them the optimum sales strategy...

This story is the same every single year and it's false each and every one.

Sounds like you don't know me, or the several other iPhone owners who have said the same thing. It's not a false story, because it's not a reality. If Apple would have introduced a smaller iPhone (the Xr in a sub-5" model), then we could see who's right. But we can't. So stop trying to belittle intelligent people who disagree with you.

This is 100% sincere: I trust you're not a divisive person, and hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving.

We've heard this narrative before. Last year, a flurry of reports variously referred to the iPhone X as a "failure," "disappointment," and "flop." Another report said the iPhone X "did not live up to the hype." Yet, the iPhone X went on to become not only the top-selling iPhone at Apple, but in the entire world.

Thank you Macrumors for adding this bit in, providing perspective and context. MR readers would do best to read this before making wildly negative assumptions.

Google’s Pixel has a fantastic camera. One month into release, it’s being discounted at BOGO50 or $200 off, rumors of slow sales dog them, yet I don’t see folks calling for the resignation of product heads.

Product heads vs CEO.
Proportion of Google Dollars from Pixel versus proportion of Apple Dollars from iPhones.
