There's an order of magnitude price difference between Apple Watch and the rumored price of this product. I don't see how they will conform to a similar demand curve. Series 0 watches were impulse buys for some people at $350. Not many people will squander $3000 on a novelty product.

You might be surprised. People were spending absurd many hundreds of dollars for 'tennis shoes'. Some willing to literally kill for them.

FYI, Meta has quietly pivoted away from VR. Even Meta realizes that the potential for a VR platform is low.
Everything seems to be going wrong for Meta these days. No one cares about Metaverse, then they tried to get into the "AI" race by releasing "Galactica" large language model for scientists and it was a dumpster fire because people noticed they cannot rely on it at all (it produces misinformation).

Now to be honest, all LLMs have problem with that, but I guess Microsoft/"OpenAI" have better marketing.

“Dead” on arrival"?
Sadly yes! Apple Engineering team in 2023 regarding the headset.

But the future is for AR, friction less see-through eye glasses that function as a phone replacement and provide a useful HUD for real life.

A good one-sentence description of the “ideal product” in this space.

But in order to be in a good position to make that ideal product successful you can’t rely on a stealth launch. Instead it matters who owns the default App Store, the selection of apps and so on. An early launch aiming to own the product space may actually make sense.

Not really getting warm fuzzies about this product, Mr Gurman… :/

They are rushing it because adult content is the main reason why people will buy this. It's one of those things the vast majority of people watch but refuse to admit they do.
I think Apple will not allow porn on the device…. Just like the AppStore.

Go buy an Oculus or something if you want to rot your brain.

My guess is that this will be like the first-gen Apple Watch: slow, underpowered, and no clear direction. If they market it correctly and developers get on board, then it will probably find its niche or killer app a couple years in. It'll probably take the Apple AR glasses to replace the iPhone.

I wonder what the Xcode simulators would look like for this device. If apps could be developed using the simulator (or using an iPhone's limited AR capabilities) then it would make it a lot easier for the ecosystem to grow despite the high price of the device.
Oh… yes that makes perfect sense. I forgot completely how the Apple Watch kind of useless until they “figured it out” from public feedback and study.

👍 spot on. I’ll expect the goggles to be the same way.

The increase in the single male demographic is proportional to the increase in Onlyfans users. From a capitalists perspective, it makes sense to indirectly target this audience using plausible deniability such as video games and non-pornographic content.

Morals aside, this is a genius move by Apple. Look at the iphone for example, it allows you to upload videos into apps, thus never showing up in your main gallery or show in storage stats as number of videos, rather just file size held by a certain app.

I can't see how they sell any of these unless there is some compatibility with a commercial application and/or PC gamers. These are the only people who can justify $3k for a toy. And if I'm not mistaken, this thing isn't going to be able to replace your Valve Index or HP Reverb.

The only way this thing goes to market is Apple feels it excites people enough by teasing them what could be in future iterations of the product. Apple Watch Series 0 was an absolute dog**** product, hilariously unreliable and underpowered, but when I bought it I knew something was brewing under the surface. But I had to experience it to know that...and unless Apple puts these VR headsets in Apple stores for people to use/try, nobody is going to care.

I think the hardware will be there to support it but the software is going to lack big time. The lack of Apple AR/VR headset apps will be lacking. It will be very limited. Look at what’s going on with the LiDAR sensor. Not too many compelling apps out there.
Sounds like you haven’t been keeping up with AR tech and software. Some of the apps are insane regarding what can be achieved.

I mean this makes no sense. Just release the product when it’s ready. Apple Watch O was not ready until version 2 or possibly 3.

What is the killer app for the goggle? Can I use them when I swim underwater? The Apple Watch figured it out with health apps but why does anybody need VR goggles?

I'm not sure this is going to take off.

“Dead” on arrival"?

setting expectations lower and lower ...

And here we go again… iPod was introduced when there were millions of discman (I think that was the name) and mo3 players used by people already, same scenario with the iPhone - what is used today that this headset is going to replace??? Name something other than gaming headsets please?
