It would make a great Apple developer dedicated test device. You only need to run one app.

But there is no reason not update iPhone 4S to iOS 8. Unless Apple to discontinuous iPod Touch 5G, iPad 2, iPad mini 1G at same time before WWDC this year. If iPod Touch 5G still sell as new, it for sure will get iOS 8 update. Since iPhone 4S has same internals, why won't it gets update?

You get 8GB iPhone 4S still selling...I do not see why 8G iPhone 5C

They need get price right. Selling it above $450 equal to no sells

Still selling, yes, Should it be selling so much? I have no idea why people would buy something with so little space. The 5C is already free on many carriers.

Now let's quickly do the math together, shall we: iOS 7.x hence uses about 3.2 GB of storage (that's 16 - 12.8, remember?). In your use case you have 4 GB of apps and data.

On a cheap and dirty iPhone 5C with 8 GB capacity that would leave you with how much memory left? That RIGHT, Sir, with 0.8 GB of storage! "Yes, you Sir, you just won the jackpot tonight, Sir!"

Doh!

I just realized imovie, numbers, and keynote are taking 3 of that. Removed, and now I have 3.8 free :) on an 8gb device. They must have downloaded automatically when I bought the phone. So in my case it is 11.3gb free now

Anyways, tons of people can get away with 8gb by using cloud storage. I use photostream and dropbox for photos. I have Sirius for music and other free things like pandora.

I know plenty of people at work, they have hardly used 40% of their memory space on their 16 GB iPhones. Does it occur to you that many people use their smartphones just for the usual calls, texts, emails, internet browsing,FB,Twitter and occasionally some photos? Well, that's the type of people who would be willing to get the 8gb 5C for less then the current price of 5C.

Yep. my wife doesn't have much music or apps on her phone...yet the 16gb is practically full.

A co-worker laughed at me for getting the 32gb work phone asking why I'd need THAT much...then when his iPhone ran through the wash and he went to order a new phone he was close to 15gb (or whatever is full on the 16gb). He doesn't have any music on his phone or many apps.

and to me 8gb is a size that was fine in early to mid 2000s. I guess some people just like to use a Smartphone. I know Photos and Videos eat up a HUGE chunk of space.

Its not a stretch to say that this could end up replacing the 8GB iPhone 4S with no cost upfront. This would also help boost sales of the 5c.

Could it also mean that the 4S won't get iOS 8? Because they did something similar with the 4th gen iPod touch last year. It would surprise me, the 4S seems capable enough to run one more generation of iOS.

The only way to do this would be
5s $200
5c $100 16gb
5c free 8gb
That would mean they are discontinuing the 4s tomorrow. I am going to say that this is only a rumor and complete lies. I just dot think apple is going to do it.
Yeah, that's based on US pricing models (the iPhone is awfully cheap in the US).

In the rest of the world (for example, Europe), the pricing is more like this:

€700: 16GB 5S, 32GB 5C
€600: 16GB 5C
€500: 8GB 5C
€400: 8GB 4S

So a €500 iPhone makes sense for Europe. It bridges the gap nicely.

Both iPads have a different screen but I would not be surprised if Apple left the Touch 5G behind as they seem to be caring less and less about the Touch devices.

Still, I hope they give the A5 devices one more round of iOS updates. It is consistent with the past and that really makes Apple shine in relation to the competition.

I'm not analyst, I just play one on the internet based on non-verified information and can hereby say this is stupid.

The 5c doesn't sell well, because everyone expected it to be affordable, as in 50-60% of the price of the 5/5s. A quarter, aka $100 off, just doesn't go as far these days.

If you back up to your computer/iCloud often then 8GB is fine for the lighter users. I don't see why people are complaining. If you don't want an 8GB iPhone then don't get one. For those who only need that amount what is the problem in letting them having one of the more latest versions over a version that is over 2 years old now?

I still cannot see Apple would drop iPad mini 1G and iPad 2 anytime soon. Apple probably will refresh its iPod Touch alone with iPhone. iPod touch has been in 2 years cycle for past 2 generations.

I would I would surprised they won't update iPhone 4S...

Indeed, and I don't consider a $700 16GB iPhone 5C to be "affordable". Neither is a reduced, 8GB iPhone 4S at more than $500. That's simply too much for a 2 generation late smartphone.

Nailed it.

Currently, in Europe, the 32GB 5S goes for almost $1100. The 32GB 5C $960. That's insane. Anyone who doesn't understand why people are complaining, it's because of this.

I wish this would come out at $299 off-contract. I'd buy it as a phone to take in more "risky" situations (vacation, concerts, biking/running, etc.) so I could leave my 5S at home during those times. Maybe I could finally get rid of my iPhone 4 that I keep as a backup! haha

This was the 20th post on this thread:

For those (most) who are unaware....the reports going back PRIOR to the September 2013 launch stated quite clearly the 4S would remain as the $0 / 8 GB device in the lineup for a limited period of time, some even stated until early 2014....so this is falling right in line with what was planned almost a year ago...

Figured I'd post that since I'm sure most forum members will act like this is some act of desperation on Apple's part (as Macrumors and other site authors already have).

Apple is just following their business plan with the 8gb 5c, namely to replace their 4s with the 5c, which is still an improved 5 in a plastic shell.

I still think that adding a plastic shell had more to do with 'scufflegate' than with creating a cheap iPhone.
Remember that it were the ANALysts that called it a cheap iPhone, this was never advertised by Apple itself.

For us, the readers of Macrumors, most 8gb, 16gb or even 32gb isn't enough anymore, but we aren't your typical users, so there will be a market for an 8gb device.

The only conclusion we can safely make is that thes will not be supported by iOS 8...that's all.

The 5c is selling just fine as a smart phone. It's not selling well as a Apple product.

Remember, kids:

Moto G 8GB: $179
Moto G 16GB: $199
.
Nexus 5 16GB: $349
.
.
.
iPhone 5C 16GB: $549
iPhone 5S 16GB: $649

What would be the trade, chip price for Apple difference between a 8GB and 16GB memory chip ?

Anyone know?

I don't like it.
While I like the iPhone 5C as an entry level iPhone, I think 8 Gb is just too small for an iPhone.
The plan is to replace iPhone 4s 8 Gb as the entry level iPhone.
Here the 4S costs about 429€ , I expect this to cost about 499/529 € ....

Apple isn't in the business of selling money-losers.....

They'd lose what, roughly $50-75 per phone if they sold at $100 off-contract? That's nuts....not even Amazon would touch those margins.

I always said if they sold the 5C at $350 off-contract, it would've been perfect. As it stands having bought mine for $350 (with the early iPhone upgrade), I love it. It really is a nice device - very well made and comfortable.

An 8GB at $250 off-contract would be pretty great.
You guys do realize they aren't going to sell it below iPod Touch's $329 figure?
It's coming for $450 without contract, take it or leave it.
