Assuming they have the same aspect ratio as the current iPhone (9:16):

4.7" iPhone at 441PPI: 1806 x 1016
5.5" iPhone at 441PPI: 2114 x 1189

Those are some weird-ass resolutions, which makes me really doubt this report (more than I did before).

1028 x _768 - iPad non-Retina
2048 x 1536 - Retina iPad

_480 x _320 - iPhone 1/3G/3SG
_960 x _640 - iPhone 4/4S
1136 x _640 - iPhone 5/c/s

2272 x 1280 - iPhone 6 ???

For the 4.7" @ 2272 x 1280 it would be 555 ppi
For the 5.5" @ 2272 x 1280 it would be 474 ppi

I would assume Apple would just double the resolution again.
That seems to be their tendency more than anything else

Could be the iPad Retina resolution but at 16:9 aspect ratio = 2048 x 1152

For the 4.7" @ 2048 x 1152 it would be 500 ppi
For the 5.5" @ 2048 x 1152 it would be 427 ppi

To get 441 ppi @ 2048 x 1152, would require a 5.33" screen.

If this is true, I may have to hang on to my iPhone 5S for an extra year, and hope that sanity returns by the iPhone 7. If you want a large screen, for the love of Mike, get an iPad.

And no, I'm not saying Apple shouldn't produce larger screened phones for the no taste people out there, but please keep making a 4" phone with the top of the line components every year.

Please, Apple, step back from the cliff before it is too late!

I think by shrinking the bezel they can cram a 4.7" screen in not much more space as the iPhone 5/5s.

Did ANYONE actually RTFA?!? So many conjectures in the comments, and almost none I read seems to be from someone who actually read the article!
Begging Apple not to abandon smaller sizes? The article DIRECTLY addresses that! (5S becoming new low cost phone.)
Upgrading the 5C? Again, addressed in the article.
Again, why comment if you haven't RTFA?

So, anyone don't want the larger screen have to be second rank citizen? How is that reasonable?

How big are my pockets suppose to be? A larger screen is not the way to go. I see all these other phones people bust out and they look like tablets.

Most women I know do not put anything in their pockets, let alone phones. That's a guy thing. It's why women have handbags.

Nope. Women have handbags because pockets on women's clothing are TINY or, worse, are just sewn-on decoration. If pockets on women's clothing were actually useful I'd never carry a handbag.

4.7" bezel free, so:
-> 16/9 means that it's diagonal is 18.357559750685...
-> 4.7 : 18.35... = x : 9
-> x = 2.30423"
-> 4.7 : 18.35... = y : 16
-> y = 4.09641"
actually iPhone 5S is 2.31" in width and 4.87" in height. If it's bezel free, dimensions should be almost the same. It makes sense to me.

And that is why people complaining so much about a larger screen need to just go sit in the corner. Larger screens do not necessarily mean the device is going to explode into this giant iPad sized device to make phone calls/read texts/check facebook. The size of the overall device is NOT going to change much at all.

Do any women work at Apple? Have you tried putting a 5" phone in the pocket of women's designer jeans? The current one can barely, barely fit. The 3.5 model was much better. That's half your customer base right there!!!

Please, Apple, step back from the cliff before it is too late!

But Females carry handbags, while males don't. So you can see that a bigger size than the current one would affect male sales even more than females sales.

I imagine Apple will launch two new models with larger screens, give the consumer more choice and with that sell more iPhones in total.

Does this mean the iPhone 5S becomes the entry level iPhone?

Do they drop the iPhone 5C completely? Or is this the entry level phone?

You'd think that, but I honestly believe that by just having one they get more consumers off the fence because they don't spend all their time thinking like "13 inch Macbook Air or 13" Retina Macbook Pro??!?" and then never buying anything so they don't get it 'wrong'.

One iPhone. I want an iPhone. No analysis paralysis.

That would be SUPER nice.

How is it reasonable the other way around?

How big are my pockets suppose to be? A larger screen is not the way to go. I see all these other phones people bust out and they look like tablets.

How is 2010? I haven't been there in a LONG time.

What about your lipstick, some type of pad, wallet (I guess you could buy a male type one) and your snacks, sanitizer, pens, keys etc. you guys carry too much stuff! Lol
also, having bigger pockets would mean looser pants and I don't think they would sell as much. Also, nowadays straight leg male pants have pockets that are almost as shallow as female ones.

I'm glad that women's designer jeans compatibility is not likely to be an influencing factor in a product that has an already big marketshare.

They just hired the former CEO of a major fashion company to run Apple stores. Think she'll want to stock mostly devices that won't appeal to fashionable rich (or wannabe thereof) women?

Who the hell carries snacks around with them?? I also don't need pens and don't care about sanitizer. I only carry the lip gloss I'm wearing on a particular day, that doesn't take much room. I rarely need much more than my ID and bank card. (I force stores with loyalty cards to look me up by phone number. Cashiers seem to hate that but I hate carrying all those damn cards around, so tough for them.)

new iPhone 6

Its about time that Apple increase the screen size closer to 6 inches. Now they need to release it this May instead of the usual and predictable fall time schedule in order to stay in the race with Samsung and others.:cool:

It's pocket, not pants!

It's a thousand songs in your pocket, not in your pants!:D

I will go for the 4.7inch. I doubt they release a 4.7 and a 5.5?? My fear if they do- is that the 5.5 becomes the flagship and gets a killer feature that the 4.7 does not get!

This is something I've thought a lot about. The 5.7 is very niche. I'm into it, but will it always have better featured? Is that really fair to the masses? Tough to say

I think the iPad Mini Retina vs iPad Air being identical spec-wise eases our worries about that. Besides the whole color gamut issue of the display that some people are able to nitpick about (and I mean that in the nicest way possible ;)), they were pretty much identical. Same resolution screen, same A7 processor, etc. The choice was with the consumer for what size screen they wanted. Want a bigger screen iPad? $100 more on the base price.
If they feel this worked out for the best for them (in terms of sales, and profit), then they will do it with the iPhone too. I really do think the iPads were a test to see if it is a successful model.

I would expect to see the smaller iPhone 6 take over the $199 16gb price point (although a base of 32gb would be wonderful, it probably won't happen). And the larger iPhone will start at $299 16gb. Makes sense to me. Especially since investors are up in arms about a shrinking profit margin, if they sell a lot of the $299 base models, that should help boost their profit margin.

But I'm just an arm chair analyst, so what the heck do I know. But it sounds as good as most analysts speaking out of their @$# and making the front page here. :)

Fully agree. I would like to see 3.5 model coming back - it is the ideal size!

The thing about features is that they aren't necessary tied to size or type of device.

I love Apple products, and find the iPhone a joy to use when I just want to play around and use Facebook, but there's nothing stopping Apple from putting in some useful productivity features. Same goes for the iPad.

On the other side of the fence, there's nothing stopping Samsung from making a device that isn't creaky plastic, and nothing stopping Google from making the tablet version of Android not junk.

Other than stubbornness that is.

So, both a 4" iPhone and 5.7" iPhone can have the same useful features, just one's bigger than the other for those that really want to be able to see what it is they are doing.

Is Apple falling behind by releasing in October (Fall) instead of May (Spring)?
Or is it the opposite that Samsung and others falling behind because they wait until next-years Spring to release what Apple did in the past Fall?
:cool::cool::cool:
Chicken or the egg, hehe.

I predict they'll drop production of the 5S and upgrade 5C internals.
I predict every new iPhone model sold in the US will have a fingerprint sensor because of some sort of payment system. If you define the difference between the 5C and 5S as the finger sensor, then no more 5C.
