I think the return is 14 days from what i was reading, so that means if it isn't out by monday then I will be to late. If the do release a lower cost iMac by 100$ i don't see how they would add something better...hmm what to do..

If I were you, I would return it while you can and wait for the new ones. The numbers and specs aren't out yet, but at least you'll have the most recent iMac vs something that's been out for 6-7 months.

Doesn't make much sense at all.

1. There is no i5-4790S. There is an i7 4790S

http://ark.intel.com/products/80808/Intel-Core-i7-4790S-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-4_00-GHz

2. Those are back-sliding CPU+GPUs for a 21.5 iMac. Both of those are HD 4600 GPUs. The current entry iMacs have Iris Pro GPUs to compensate for no discrete GPU. If Apple is trying to chop costs seems unlikely they would be adding a dGPU + VRAM to the entry model. Perhaps they got a made clearance pricing on some dGPUs but typically when Apple adds more the costs go up; not down.

The writers often republish speculations, and those speculations are frequently full of errors. Some of the mistakes are blatantly obvious, and I don't think they're going to use HD 4600 gpus in any of these.

Why would someone want to waste GPU power on pushing more pixels on an imac? The resolution is fantastic, as is.

If you think you need a retina imac, then you are easily fooled by marketing gimmicks.

Lol so a 15" Retina MBP is fine, but wanting a 21.5" Retina iMac is absurd ?

Sorry, there's an obvious difference between Retina and non-Retina, so like many other people, I'll be waiting for that update .

I'm not a fan of the imac anymore. 21.5 is small and the 27 is not worth if for price to me.

yeah that is what i was thinking to, man i don't want to lug this thing back through the mall. Just got it all set up on the new desk too. ugh.

....

What you are looking for is called a Mac Pro.

Over time some/many current Mac Pro capabilities will come down to lower cost Macs. That is generally how the PC market works. This year's "above average higher end" performance is mainstream in 3-5 years time.

In the posting, the "time willing to wait" was 30 months. That is 2.5 years. In 2.5 years, DDR4 probably will have reached the iMac line up (Intel's roadmaps already make that clear). UHD screens will be far more mainstream than they are now. Mobile GPUs will be improved to far better match being paired with UHD screens.

Sure if someone wants UHD with graphics 'horsepower' to match and max memory bandwidth right now the Mac Pro is a better match. But several years down the road... that is different.

If this is true, I wonder why they just didn't announce this at WWDC?

Apple typically doesn't do hardware announcements with only minor spec bumps. You'll see them do keynote announcements of hardware when significant changes are made.

I continue to be at a loss for what I want to replace my aging Macs with... on the one hand, I have debts that I need to pay. On the other hand, both are currently classified as vintage and I can really tell on my Air (not so much on my iMac, although before the end of the year my iMac will be classified as obsolete - the Air won't technically be labeled that until next year).

Yes, if this update is true then Broadwell is far off. Hopefully it will mean new Macs just in time for the holiday season though.

I'm not sure why this information is not getting around more, but Broadwell as a micro-architecture may be coming in Q4 2014, but that's only for the tablet/convertible-class chips.

Laptop chips are next coming in Q1 2015 and desktop chips will come only in Q2 2015 - this is the current plan at least.

A Broadwell iMac is more or less a year away, this is why we're getting this sort of meagre update.

If this is true, I wonder why they just didn't announce this at WWDC?

WWDC is a software developers conference. The only reason to announce hardware updates would be if it impacted the software developers or there wasn't enough software stuff to fill the 90 minutes.

Retina iMacs and other hardware updates should have their own show to maintain focus and prevent product dilution.

...and I don't think they're going to use HD 4600 gpus in any of these.

If paired with a dGPU, then the HD 4600 makes alot of sense in an iMac. The non HD 5xxxx ( Iris / Iris Pro ) CPU+GPU packages cost less which would help with Apple's problem of higher price drift.

The OS X tech to switch lower TDP GPUs will only dealing with light graphics workloads would lower temperature inside of the iMac also. If just watching Netlfixs full screen, reading email, or typing a long report there isn't huge necessity for a dGPU.

Look, I am after iMac actually..... but hey, I should also say: No mac mini? Since everyone around here seem to say it every time something is rumoured to launch.

That's because there are soooo many people I know, (as well as myself) that are just waiting to get into the Mac World after being a long time PC User, and the mini is the perfect avenue for it. But the All in One (iMac) scares them, and the Pro is over kill.

:apple: Bring on a decent mini refresh and see how many more users convert!!!

According to dailytech, China is debating whether or not to prohibit the sale of all Apple products and block the use of Google.com and its products (allegedly) due to fears of NSA spying. It has already banned Windows 8 for the same reason.

That's crazy! Why on earth would China do that?

It's way easier to spy on Windows XP...

Mac mini, Maxi sales!

This. I'm waiting for a new mini before I build a home server (it's going to be the "brain", and I'd rather get a slightly more powerful chip before I jump on it).

Apple is certainly creating a lot of pent-up demand for the Mac mini by stretching out the refresh period this time! When it does come (probably Broadwell equipped in the fall) I think it's going to sell like hotcakes! And not just to all of us who have been waiting for it for so long now. I think they will probably inaugurate a new push for the general public, now that iOS devices are so popular among "non-Apple" people. Crossover time is ripe right now, and even more so in the fall with all the new goodies coming. A re-designed, smaller box with possibly AppleTV functionality built-in, and games, would sell like crazy to said public. They would eat it up. I think Apple is not neglecting it at all, but is crazy like a fox, and intent on truly maximizing sales, in the run-up to Christmas, of a brand-new, greatly enhanced machine. Or so we can hope...!

people get excited about new hardware. software and it's underlying capabilities are all just an expectation to most, just something that has to work and do whatever is expected and always a day too late. you could code the software equivalent of time travel and no one would blink an eye but tweak the profile of a phone enough that it looks different then their neighbor's and the world goes nuts. funny the world we live in...

The difference is that if I buy an iMac now and Apple does a major update in a month and a half, I can't just download and install the new GPU.

I would love a Mini with a new GPU, but it's going to be a couple years before I'd consider upgrading mine as I haven't found anything that I do that it doesn't do quick enough (or indeed, doesn't support).

After using a Retina macbook at home, I'm not going to upgrade my work iMac until the new models have retina. :(

I know it's going to be quite expensive for Apple to produce, but I would think iMacs already have a pretty huge markup on them that could absorb at least a some of the cost. Once they start making screens like this in large quantities the cost should go down.

I don't think the resolution needs to double the current one. Apple could afford to use a slightly lower native res (and double that), as screen elements are already tiny, making them larger would be an improvement for me.

That's all well and good but seriously WTF is going on with the Mac Mini and AppleTV

I mean Seriously!!!!

More so the AppleTV. Maybe it's because I don't have a TV anymore, but I haven't been able to understand it's appeal for a while now.

Granted, now that I have iFlicks maybe that will change. :D

Pulling attention towards other things? Like, at WWDC they can talk about new software and make sure the attention is on that. Then next week they can release new iMacs and suddenly the attention is on those (albeit for a short time).

What's the big appeal of a Mac mini? I'm genuinely just curious. Is it because they're highly upgradeable and you get to choose your own display/s? If they redesign the physicality of the Mac mini I can see a lot of the internals becoming soldered just like in the rMBP. Surely that will just reduce upgradeability?

I think they are coming out with a Touchscreen iMac in the fall, all the changes in Mavericks seem geared towards that.

It's more designed for a trackpad than for a touchscreen. Large click targets are more akin to being geared for touchscreen and there isn't much more of that in any version of OS X they've shown us so far.

Also the whole ergonomics bit.
