Maybe, local small business is possibly going to benefit. When you “google” it, the big names flood the results, but a map is a physical location that might be more difficult to edge out a smaller businesses placement or ads. But time will tell…
There’s a shop near me, comparable size to others nearby, whose label simply does not appear when I’m browsing the map (scrolling/zooming). I can search for it by name and it gets found, else it’s invisible.

If this is ‘pay to play’ then it’s easy to see smaller shops becoming invisible.

I'm pretty sure the number of people who use Apple Maps versus Google Maps or even Waze is very low.

And what premium? iPhones cost the same as similar Samsung phones.
I use Apple Maps constantly when traveling local. When taking big trips or overseas, I switch to Google. That said, I have noticed significant room for improvement in Maps. Perhaps they should fix its issues before including ads.

We all have been tricked into spending over 1000+ on phones and tech/smart things we don't need. A phone with a 40% margin and overpriced storage options comes now with ads. They want to squeeze every penny out of our time. I love tech, but I'm slowly trying to avoid it because they've tricked us into buying their toys, and now that we're trapped, they do what they want. Instead of using the power as consumers and stop buying bs people are instead defending their favorite companies like they're the CEOs.
When you say we were tricked, please use “I was tricked.” You can buy a degoogled, Linux phone or some other phone. And you’re annoyed people aren’t defecting from Apple. 🤣

The very differentiators (vis a vis Microsoft, Meta, Google, etc) that have kept me loyal to Apple for the past 20 years are rapidly disappearing. Apple News is so riddled with ads now it's practically unreadable. The UIs in Mac OS and iOS are a mess (IMHO), new product development is haphazard, and Cook has sold his soul like the other tech billionaires.

Apple literally sells a phone for $599, almost half the cost of the Pro version.

And how on earth have you been tricked into buying anything?

One of the main reasons prefering macOS over Windows is NO ADS, no pushy shiny stuff!
If they are forcing this to their users... why pay a premium anymore?
This. Hardware quality, mostly ad-free products except where they kinda have to (Apple TV+ trailers) and included customer support are reasons I like Apple and don’t mind paying more than other products.

I wish the ads in the App Store were smaller but more obvious (more prominent background so the ad doesn’t look like a search result/don’t take up half the search result page before I see what I searched for).

If they really are going to do this (keep in mind this is a Gurman report) I would hope they would somehow do so tastefully. No full page results. Maps should be quick and easy, or maybe just tuck it away in the Guides section when I click it.

Do you own a flagship smartphone? If so, you've been tricked too, especially if it's a so called "professional" Phone. Enjoy the ads. I'm still using my iPhone 13 and refuse to upgrade until Apple ends software support.

Through Apple marketing when I was younger and more naive. Many people have been tricked and still are. 99% of pro iPhone buyers don’t need it but still buy a new one every year and now with ads.

If they would just expend the energy for the ads on making the operating systems bullet proof with no bugs, folks would be a lot happier.

The overhead of trying to put "Fred's Fish House" on the the map correctly the first time (all of the potential advertisers) would require lots of folks and take attention away from debugging their operating systems which should have been Job One from the get go but seems to be Job (Some high number) today.

Apple is trying to put various colors of lipstick on their pig. They need to fix the issues by doing an etch-a-sketch and starting from scratch with a clean sheet of paper.

The Board of Directors needs to tell Tim to take care of the customers first with problem free preducts and software. There has been a dearth of viable new products.

As an example, the Ultra Watch improvement from v2 was a new color, really now. Does lipstick on a pig seem appropriate now?

Maybe the Board of Directors should suggest Tim spend his time in the office managing the business instead of flying all over the world in his private corporate jet.

He needs to motivate the troops, Those employees not fired with enthusiasm soon will be.

I only use Apple Maps to cross-check Google Maps directions when I’m seeing an usual route or heavy traffic. I’ll cross-check with Waze now I guess. But ugh, I had to stop using Waze years ago for sending me on routes with impossible left turns onto streets with congested two-way traffic. I hope they improved that.

If the EU as they do stick their nose into US tech companies, like they do, I hope they can insist apple must not put ads into all their apps or tell them they must stop charging premium prices then implementing ads. Because it doesn’t actually benefit consumers at all. Why must we pay for ads it just shows how out of touch companies are from their customers!

Literal Steve Jobs rolling right now

Yes the man who initially tried to kill the iPhone, saw no use for such a device, or how a product like the iPhone could change Apple's entire future as a tech company, and had to be convinced over and over by engineers that the product would succeed, is indeed rolling around in his grave.

The original iPhone prototype had to be built behind Jobs back deep in the bowels at Apple. It was a secretive project that Jobs knew nothing about until the prototype was done and ready to be demoed.

This is garbage and I’m totally against it but it’s funny to see how much people view Steve Jobs with rose colored glasses.

If anyone didn’t know, Steve wanted to put ads directly into macOS. Including playing during startup.

Jobs envisioned the ad-supported version of Mac OS 9 displaying a 60-second commercial from a "premium" company at startup, with the ads occasionally being automatically swapped out for new ones over the Internet. He also visualized the use of contextually relevant ads, such as an Epson printer ink ad being displayed when the user's printer was reporting that it was low on ink.

If the ads are exclusively by/for/about the location you've searched, then they could be a value-add, giving more information than mere location about the place you've found.

What would be ruinous would be allowing (for example) Target to display an advertisement to everyone who's searched for a Walmart location. Or McDonalds to display an advertisement to anyone who searches for any restaurant. But if I search for Joe's Diner, and Joe's Diner has paid for an ad telling me more about Joe's Diner, that could be a real benefit.

I've deleted this app years ago. I doubt they managed to get ahead of GMaps/Waze here in EU.
I finally trust it enough to drive with it here in Switzerland.. Exactly 10 years after it being released.. Its been pretty useless until now as you noticed... Its half decent and arguably better then google while on CarPlay mode. Waze certainly is better in that it features those radar traps/speedcameras/police we all like to know about... I doubt apple will ever feature that much info in it.. Give it another try for driving directions... The front console dash also works for navigation info (complementing the center console of CarPlay) which Waze doesn't do..
