But how heavy is that going to be if you slap a Magic Keyboard on it?
Just like a majority of MacBook Pros never leave the desk they're on, I suspect the majority of these iPads will never leave the studio they're used in—or at least, never leave the house or workplace. So it's a little moot.

The macOS and iOS platforms are largely interchangeable now...

There's no reason why macOS software couldn't run on iPad.
Functional or technical reason? I mean, watchOS could also run on a Mac Pro, but it’s about whether it makes sense.

I think the UI with icons is getting long in the tooth...and you would think after 15 years apple would have innovated in that area but no. lets just clutter everything more.

And with a large screen they propose, you serious? they can't make the ipad pro m1/m2 work for creatives now! let alone move the ipad to a larger screen lol..Is this the onion news?o_O

The iPad weather app will look stunning too. Everything is good about the 16” iPad.

I could be wrong, but it sounds like you think Apple has proposed a 16" iPad.

At that size, they might as well create a Macbook "Ultra" where the screen can either be opened and locked to standard laptop position or rotated 180 degrees and flipped back down to use as a 16" tablet with Apple Pencil (or mouse).

Throw in an M3 Max or an M3 Ultra, give it a smudge proof OLED screen and you'd have the ultimate artist laptop! I'd definitely buy one.

Remember table top arcade machines from the early days of gaming at a quarter a pop? Like this:

I actually think a tabletop-sized iPad could be a niche hit to revive some of that in homes... a mini boon for "arcade."

It might also work as a table-top brainstorming board in a corporate environment.

Even 16 inch would be too small for that but if one stops thinking about all iPads being very mobile and switch the thinking to mostly stationary, it could be a modern-day "card table" type bit of fun at home and brainstorming board on a corp conf. tables.

Else, hopefully Apple makes this double as a mobile monitor screen so that things like Mac Mini can become an alternative to carrying the same chips inside of a laptop. Mini (or even Studio) + a laptop-sized mobile screen starts becoming a tangible alternative to a classic laptop for anyone with general access to being able to plug in the mobile(?) desktop Macs where they tend to need computing.

I keep looking at this super powerful Ultra sitting on my desk and seeing it as a bowling ball in cube form. Travel bags for it already exist. Pack a mouse, keyboard and mobile screen in a bigger case and it becomes a mobile Mac Studio Ultra.

Technically iPadOS could run Mac apps, or at least with slight to moderate adaptation.

Functionally, well, that's another matter as you say—but if one company can show how it can be done, it's Apple!

Seriously, I really believe this could be a route forward and would not be surprised to find it a feature of next year's WWDC.

I’m still stunned that there are people who think slapping a desktop OS on a tablet is a good idea, years after the failure of that concept and the triumph of the iPad. Of course it’s respectable and some (few people) would like it, but it wouldn’t be an attractive product in the market.
