So basically a new form-factor for the ‘SE’ tier of the iPhone lineup (based on a tried & tested model, but upgraded to perform better).

I think this will sell well, as the less advanced overall technology should permit Apple to price it lower than their full screen models.

This lower price would allow it to be sold as an entry-level iOS device in less developed markets. It should also satisfy those customers who are still not ready to move to Face ID -based iPhones. The only thing that might restrain sales a little is the physical size increase over the old iPhone SE.

This makes no sense at all. Assuming Apple will do what they always do and launch the XI and XI Max and XR2 in September and brings down the prices of the XS($899), XS Max($999),XR($649), 8($499) and 8 Plus($599), how do they then differentiate between iPhone 8 from September 19 and iPhone 8 from March 20?
$50 more for 128GB instead of 64GB and things (CPU, etc) the average Joe doesn't know or understand, and it will be at the same price as the XR?
Something is wrong with this news, either the specs or price.
Remember the iPhone SE? It has the A9, better hardware than the more expensive iPhone 6 at that time, and it's cheaper.
One thing I like about Apple, is when they get serious, they are not afraid cannibalising themselves. I think even Jobs has stated something in that notion, that he prefer the one cannibalising Apple to be Apple themselves rather than other competitors.

single camera lens,old,obsolete,dull LCD display,and ancient,full bezel design..for $649..
they have no shame.

Ok? Why are you under the impression that every consumer cares about having The latest hardware, when they would rather have a smaller form factor without having all the unnecessary technology they may not need or care about. Wasn’t that the purpose of the iPhone SE to begin with? To bring a 4 inch iPhone to the market that delivered in terms of being compact and affordable. [Not to mention, we don’t know the price of this new iPhone yet.]

Single lens? iPhone XR, same DXOmark as Pixel 3, which many considers to be one of the best camera phone.
Dull LCD? Again, iPhone XR, blind tests seem to show that people don't seem to mind.
As for design, we'll see come 2020. We have not even had 2019 iPhones yet. :D

In 2020, world will have absolutely no place for those gigantic bezels, regardless of the price. The ones who want a home button and really hate the notch will be small in number.

And Apple doesn't really care for small numbers. Unless this phone is priced really, really low, this won't take off

Gigantic bezels? Who cares? Doesn't matter what year it is. Bezels and years have no correlation whatsoever. It will probably be a great phone, just like the current 8 is. I'll definitely consider buying it, and I'll use the heck out of it and most likely love it. Millions of others will too...

Actually, I saw those video tests of the side-by-side comparisons with an OLED panel versus the XR-LCD panel, it wasn’t that consumers ‘didn’t mind’, they couldn’t even tell the difference between the two. So I gather an LCD panel would be perfectly suitable, especially if Apple wants to retain a lower price point, when the OLED panel is one of the more expensive components.

SE diehard fans: This is your affordable small form factor iPhone.

Wrong direction. Yet another compromised flop. Some Apple people who never understood that specific customer group (similar to Mac Mini).
4 inch n.e. 4.7 inch.
For your explanation: It was never primarily about the price. It was about the unique form factor.
Give me the XR and a SE2, same camera: I would pay the same price for both and take the SE2. And Apple could adapt the price in certain countries to still earn margin.

Does this mean apple will discontinue sales of the 8 and 7 series iPhones this year.

Seems more plausible now that apple will be producing iPhone X in India.

Mid-range phone for $650? At that price it’s not even mid-range especially single camera/LCD. If they lower it by $100-$159 I’d would dominate, but this is Apple we’re talking about.

128 GB base storage with A13 and 3 GB RAM at $649 in 2020 in an iPhone 8 form factor would sell well. Note though I had been predicting a little brother to the XR. The little brother would have been an LCDified X, just like the XR is an LCDified Max. But a warmed over iPhone 8 could work too if done right.

I’m skeptical about the 128 GB as I would have expected 64 GB entry level and upgradable to 128 GB for US$50, but if true that bodes well for my next flagship. I want a flagship Max sized iPhone with 128 GB storage, 4 GB RAM, and 5G modem, for US$999, but I’d consider it at US$1099 too. I’m prepared to ride out another 18 mos with my existing iPhone 7 Plus, which currently has 100% battery capacity after getting a new battery in December.

yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes *

all that this rumor can be thought to contain is simply that a 4.7 inch dimension phone might be in the works.
base storage, bezel size, button or no button, its beyond this 1st rumor to even rumor about it yet.
but its a great day to even hear this basic rumor.

(*apologies to James and Molly)

Samsung's "mid-range" Galaxy A80 was announced at ~€700, and that is using only a mid-range SoC.
If this iPhone uses A13, the $649 would actually be pretty good. Even an A12 would still be decent as it is still at flagship level performance.
We'll see come 2020. It's been a while since we have quite juicy rumor like this. :)

I think Apple is going to make some changes. I mean nobody expected the iPad mini 5 to have the latest A12 chip, and priced that low. Compared to the 2018 iPhones, spec wise the iPad mini 5 is a total steal. It's surely exciting to see what's coming.

The only changes will be swapping out like for like, e.g. chip and maybe camera. Probably nothing that needs a physical change like USB-C will be considered. Lightning port phones in 2020 *vomit*

A80 has 1080p OLED (with in-screen fingerprint) and 8GB RAM, whereas this iPhone will likely be 720p LCD and 2GB RAM. A13 will be probably be used for simplicity of supply chain but bottlenecked in the actual phone.

I swear apple already pissed off a lot of people with every major smartphone company offer a full screen phone without the cancer notch except . The hardware department should be developing additional variation of iPhone like embedded touchID that scan user fingerprints via touching the screen. The faceID approach is a stupid idea if it shaves off a portion of the screen and super awful.

Make a bezel-less version at that size. Not a clone.

A bezel-less version at that size would be the iPhone XS. That would only make sense for a "budget" phone if the display is a "Liquid Retina" LCD display like in the XR and maybe with an ultrasonic fingerprint reader trough the display to bring costs down. A smaller XR is what many people had hoped for.......

Yeah, Who would’ve thought Apple developed the _most_ secure biometric form of security utilizing 3D facial mapping in a smart phone just to ‘shave’ off a portion of the display. I can’t believe they did that. /S.
