I don’t believe this. It would be in direct competition with the Xr (or the Xr successor, to launch this year). It has no logical place in the lineup.

A whole ‘nother year for a reasonably small sized, cheaper (still expensive) option? That’s a bit long.

Does 2019 really need another iPhone model? (Rhetorical) It’s completely the opposite of what you said, It makes sense for Apple to separate this iPhone from their other iPhone models, they wouldn’t want a lower entry level iPhone detracing away from the XR 2/iPhone 11 launch in September. Which leads the next possible traditional keynote sometime in the spring for this phone to debut.

In 2020, world will have absolutely no place for those gigantic bezels, regardless of the price. The ones who want a home button and really hate the notch will be small in number.

And Apple doesn't really care for small numbers. Unless this phone is priced really, really low, this won't take off

Exactly. $349 and they might have a winner.

It’s been 3 years since the SE launched and this will make it 4 years. At that time the 6 (not even Plus) was bigger than any prior iPhone. I think there should have already been a smaller option, either unto itself, or in place of one of the three larger options.

I don't know how it will fare priced at $649 and with such a dated design.
I don't really think it's outdated design. I still see people with iPhone 6/7/8/+ every day, and barely saw anyone with the X or Xs Max. I find the design of the 8 really cute lol

The CPU in the A80 might have a midrange sounding name, but it is faster than the CPU in the S8 and S9. Then add the camera, screen [6" + Amoled], memory, under-screen fingerprint etc and this "mid-range" phone is more flagship than any Android from 12-18 months ago aside from CPU performance = to any current Apple flagship for basic specs.

For what it's worth, I just purhased a brand new 6S for £139 so I cannot see anyone paying £500 more for something that physically looks the same, even if it has a faster CPU [that will not materially matter for 99% of time], and probably for a little more memory.
For the A80 price, one might as well get the S10e, an actual flagship. If you can afford the A80, you can afford the S10e. And outside Samsung, there's Mi9, upcoming OnePlus 7, etc, which all offer more for less.

Anyway, back to the topic. Design wise, we won't know until 2020. I'm sure Apple will want all the iPhone lineup to be on FaceID by then. In short, it's been a while since I'm excited about an iPhone rumor. :)

Sure, but in terms of the market and what other phones look like in this price range, it is outdated.

There are those that are put off by the newer design or are not interested in paying more money some are quite happy to have the old style iPhone I went for the iPhone 8 over the X XS XR models because the 8 does most of what they do (fast charging wireless charging etc) and i don't need a big screen (which is what put me off the XR) i still see loads of people with an 8 or even 6 models so it may convince them to jump to this new model rather than going to android

SE diehard fans: This is your affordable small form factor iPhone.

SE diehard fan here. This phone isn’t even remotely interesting to me, I don’t think you understand what SE users find valuable in a phone.

Why are you under the impression that every consumer cares about having The latest hardware, when they would rather have a smaller form factor without having all the unnecessary technology they may not need or care about. Wasn’t that the purpose of the iPhone SE to begin with?

At the time the SE launched, it actually had all the latest hardware. It came out right after the 6S and it was effectively a 6S in a 5S shell. It was small and high-end at the same time.

Regarding the purpose, I don’t know. They certainly addressed two market segments in one shot — those wanting a smaller phone and those wanting a cheaper phone. No idea why they priced it so low, I would have paid far more for it and still bought it on launch day.

As for this new phone, it doesn’t sound like it will be either small or cheap; and is anyone out there actually all that interested in the design of the 8 over the X? What is Apple thinking?

The “cheap iPhone” market will buy anything that hits their price point. I hope Apple doesn’t see this as a way to satisfy the small phone market too, because that would be a mistake.

iPhone 9?
That would kind of make sense. What also would make sense would be upgrading to 4GB of RAM and offering a 64GB version at $549. $499 if Apple truly wants to be “aggressive”. The battery on my mom’s 5s isn’t holding a charge too well and she doesn’t want to spend any more than she did with her 5s ($649), less if possible. I’ve also ruled out anything with 2GB of RAM so the current iPhone 8 is a no-buy.

It’s been three years since the iPhone SE launch, but it’s only been seven months since it’s been discontinued. Not to mention, one can still purchase the SE via Apples clearance section. Regardless, I still think it makes complete sense to have a separate launch for this entry-level iPhone versus competing with the more expensive iPhones in the fall. That seems very ‘Apple-like’ move to me. I’m sure Apple wants some focus to be on this entry-level phone, but certainly not enough to detract away from the more expensive phones either.

Apple gave up on user experience when they made an OS that could be crashed by someone texting you the wrong emoji
Well, a software bug is your benchmark of user experience? Okay then, everybody has their own viewpoint, considering there is no o/s and electronic product that doesn’t have errata.

The world is not the 15% of people from western countries that can afford to make of big bezels some sort of real life issue. And even in western countries there are a lot of people that can’t, and even many that just don’t care.

As a UX designer, and a very good one that works for a very big tech company leader in its market (not Apple obviously, so I am not biased) I can tell that you don’t know, or understand, what UX is. What you said makes literally no sense.

2020?

In India, they're manufacturing the XE this summer, based on the iPhone7.

Let's see...

im actually interested in this one - if only it had a decent screen (not like xr) - to replace my old 6s+. i want a home button, i do not want either the faceId or the notch. something to wait, for sure...
