Because in my experience, even with a fairly fast (6MB+) connection streamed video is nowhere near the quality of the content off my DVR. I bought a high def TV not to deal with tonnes of compression artifacts etc... I don't want to see all those blocks (especially in the dark parts of the scene) in high def. So for me a DVR is still best. Even a 720p rip that I download (1.2GB+) does not look as good.

Add to that, that internet connections are far from stable and reliable. Sure I have pretty good "up time" but still I don't want to be dealing with dropouts while trying to watch something. Now assuming Apple is smart, at least this issue may be dealt with by the use of a healthy buffer (16gb is more than enough) that may not be relevant.

Agreed completely. We have a connection that's averaging 1.6mb, but we get god-knows-how-many channels of perfect HD over two Sky boxes in two rooms - I can only imagine trying to stream the same amount from a cloud. It just wouldn't work for us, and I can only imagine, an awful lot of other people in the same situation, internet wise, as ourselves. Add to that, in the UK only, Sky's total domination of HD and SD programming, and it can't really take off here. I'm only talking about our little old country, by the way.

Sky's new box looks good too - 240 hours of HD storage! No more running out of room thanks to an HD series link you've forgotten about, lol.

It's more the demise of Microsoft as a dominant/relevant force. They'll remain the key business supplier, and there's no way they'll die- their cash reserve will let them jump into new markets, like the Health Industry. I do think, however, that by the end of this decade Microsoft will just be another big software vendor, and not the giant with the stranglehold on the desktop industry they've been for the last two decades.

My point exactly

Huh, I've never had any interest in getting an Apple TV, but this would potentially challenge my planned Boxee Box purchase given a few features:

  • Ability to play movies stored on a (local or remote!) NAS
  • Small battery (maybe good for streaming 5 hours - 2 movies - of video?) so you don't have to dig out the power cable to take it to a friend's house
  • Software smart enough to not only automatically connect to known networks, but automatically find known NAS devices whether local or remote

I figure that would not only be a pretty sweet little player for home, but provide awesome, pocketable, big screen access to your entire movie collection from anywhere.

This has all been done before.

Just being approached differently I suppose? Either way...unless its as beautiful and seemless as my XMBC....no interest to change.

And you could take a spelling class.

First of all, iam not an english native.

Secondly I was typing that on my new iPad, on the go and I forgot to switch to the English keyboard therefore my iPad tried to spellcheck the English words for German. I just read it and recognized the mistake.

So I won't take any classes today.

Cool news if they take it seriously...

However, Google TV sounds like much better system - for now that is...

We will see how story develops further :)

Is there still market for 720p?

If someone's TV screen were not too large and they had a slightly less than stellar bandwidth then of of course. 1080p is pretty intense data transfer in real time for many systems. Surely it's good to have a less demanding alternative as a choice till technology advances.

You don't have to sync it, you can stream it. Either way, the video will essentially only be in one place at a time - on your computer and being streamed to your tv or on your ATV and being played locally (but yes, the original copy will be on your computer). In both cases, it's "at the TV" when you want it. You might have to get up and go turn your computer on, but is that really that much of a hassle?

The mini as an HTPC is powerful and capable, but it is a lot more expensive and not as user friendly.

Let me rephrase my original point. I don't want video on my laptop. I want it on an TV or HD connected to TV. When I download a video, I want to transfer it to that device and leave it there.

devil, details

The 'devil will be in the details' as it were. Just a smaller, cheaper ATV with the current feature set is a non-starter. Count me out.

Build a smaller, cheaper ($199) ATV with the ability to connect to my LAN (for storage purposes - I have 2TB of media) and stream ANYTHING - including DVDs I slide into the server, include a fully functional web browser, and build in a HDTV tuner w/DVR capabilities, and I'll buy one tomorrow.

Yeah re-reading everything...why are people excited exactly?

Everything its offering you can do RIGHT now and could've done for years.

An xbox360 is $200 for the cheap model and does all of this and more. I guess if you have zero interest in games and want something tiny in your TV rack sure.

But even then...get a $200 nettop and boom.

Hey in which case well done. The thing that had me all twisted was the auto caps feature after a full stop (period). It took me a month to learn not to make my own which resulted in a lower case letter . Then I found on my Mac Pro I was not adding a cap! Agggh!

Apple need to sync these features (as an option) across the OS X range too so old farts like me can cope with an iPad and a Mac.

So basically, this is just an Airport hub that connects to your TV and has an OS? Well done Apple! Glaze this in about 100 'beautiful', 'lovely', 'magical' and it will almost seem like a genuinely 'revolutionary' product... Given its dubbed as being cloud-based, the majority of people that have poor internet connections will just love this.

My only Kudo - the fact that they re-using hardware across the same products in order to bring retail prices down, like the iPad etc...

I was just giving you a hard time. When did you get the iPad? I had bratwurst and sauerkraut last night to celebrate the launch.

Easier and less expensive to simply get an external 1 or 2 GIG Firewire drive to your Mac and use as a Movie folder for iTunes. Then stream to Apple TV when needed. It means you always have your movies to take anywhere if needed.

The fundamental problem with AppleTV and GoogleTV rests with the lack of strong collaboration with the content providers.

GoogleTv is theoretically impressive, but there are a lot of questions on whether important players are going to cooperate.

I imagine if Apple is going to really go after this market, the new device will be introduced in September along with important announcements by content producers on how media is delivered.

Streaming media will be a niche demographic simply because of the uneducated general consumer.

I'm fine with that as as long as i can stream and my friends are impressed whatever haha...but there will be no breakout market for a device like this...at least not at this point. Same with GoogleTV.

Hell most people don't even know their 360/PS3 can stream video.

just bought...

in anticipation of a software update to compete with google tv...no regrets though, it fulfills my hd movie playback needs and frees our mac mini up for the kids room...now hoping apple does not abandon the current platform too soon!
