I’ve never used MagSafe nor Wireless charging on any iPhone I’ve owned. If they took out this feature I’d only know by reading about it. Saving weight would be nice. But if lots of people use it they should keep this feature.

Power packs being able to click onto the back, and phones being able to be magnetically mounted are two absolute dealbreakers.

But given the trend of eliminating universally beloved features for the sake of cost efficiency, a la 3D Touch, I'm sure this rumor is credible.

Can't wait to see the new emojis and "coming soon" intelligence features this WWDC!

If there is no MagSafe on the next iPhone, then I’m not buying it! I have 3 different Mag chargers now and it would be a deal breaker. 👀

On the Mac it doesn’t transfer data though. Maybe Apple to looking to expand and make it versatile.
As far as I know, the only accessories on the iPad that use the POGO to transfer data, are keyboards, which can easily be done with Bluetooth. And with an iPhone everything can easily transfer wirelessly with WiFi. And if you need to transfer huge files, then just plug in the USB C, that is mandated by the EU(there will never be a new charging/data port/alternative invented while that law exists)

On the keyboard you can charge via the USB-C port.

I couldn’t have said it better. Or maybe I am simply too kind around here.

Same with the other thread on the Vision Pro possibly being discontinued.
This is the reference I came back here for.

Where do you carry your iPhone when going commando?
So many good response options — so few won't get me a 3 day ban 😀

I agree. If I don't use it, there's no use for it.
I know only one person who does use it. Personally I haven't ever, so far. It never seemed like a good idea to me, more like a fad like 3D movies, unless and until they also remove the charging port for weatherproofing purposes, and can surpass USBC charging speeds, neither of which I see happening.

How much energy is being lost per phone due to wireless charging? 0.005 kW/h? More? Less?
kW/h is not energy, but the rate of change of power, which itself is the rate of change of energy. I guess you meant kWh.

The loss depends on many things, the worst case scenario is that you try to charge it wirelessly in the Sahara desert, at noon, in direct sunlight, then the battery might not charge at all. But in a more realistic summer scenario, you might loose 50%, that means to charge a 0.02 kWh iPhone you lose the same amount.

If we assume that 20% of MagSafe-capable iPhones are charged wirelessly once a day, and the loss is a more moderate 25%, you deduct the 10% wired charging loss, meaning a 15% extra loss for wireless charging, you'd lose around 200 TWh a year. You need 8.3 Chernobyls to produce that much electricity. Only the loss compared to wired charging. For fifth of the iPhones. Almost 42 Chernobyls if all of the iPhones were charged wirelessly. That means 168 RBMK-1000 reactors.

No.

MagSafe took away from me one thing I liked. The iPhone X had a Hall-effect (magnetic) sensor that together with a folio case that had a magnet in it in the right location, would lock the screen when the folio case was closed. The magnets for MagSafe apparently made that unfeasible.

Where a wire is readily available, I think wireless charging is slow and relatively inefficient, although I suppose it's subject to less wear than cables or sockets. And in a vehicle, I'd have to take the phone out of the case to get a solid grip on a MagSafe charger bracket, esp. with a folio case best folded backwards when open (if using a clamp). And except for the proverbial just church on Sunday old lady or the chauffeur in the old Mercury Marquis car commercial where they were cutting a diamond in the back seat, I'm not sure who drives gently enough to trust a magnetic holder to keep a grip in a vehicle even without a case.

If I could have that lock on case close feature back, I wouldn't object to MagSafe even if I rarely if ever used it. But as it stands, I don't love it.

How many of you are really sitting there, thinking, man I really wish I could use some of this precious iPhone battery to charge something else. At a much lower efficiency, like lose 30% of my battery to give 15% of it to another device?

Not saying it makes sense, but I can see someone wanting to top off AirPods from anything with more power. They could of course keep a short cable for that, and have much greater efficiency.

AirPods are the only product that makes sense for that. And it would be cool if apple added reverse changing. But a lot of comments were saying they would get rid of MagSafe, and replace it with reverse charging.

I should hope Apple doesn't consider this...I still haven't recovered from the death of the headphone jack.
Plus, I currently rely on MagSafe to mount my girlfriend's and my iPhone in my car, and so the whole system becomes a fancy paperweight without MagSafe lol 🤣. I need the magnet function to keep the phone in the mount, and I've got one on my dash, similar to this photo but lower on the console, and also a suction cup version. Seemed like a good idea and a good purchase... providing every future iPhone continues to include MagSafe... 🥲 Please Apple, let us keep our beloved MagSafe.
