if thursday rolls by and nothing but modest upgrades happen, i'm going to assume tim cook meant 2014 was going to be special not for their product lines or customers, but apple's profits. call me slightly disappointed. apple watch? big phone. hologram apple logo? yawn... i'm more excited about yosemite than any physical product out so far (or rumored by credible sources) this year.

Maybe you will get a 3D effect once the phone bends ;)

and now i gotta ask: do you people laugh at road-crossing chicken jokes? orange you glad it's not a banana? holy gawd...

So I just went from an iPhone 5 to a Galaxy S5 to an iPhone 6. The blinking dot was the first thing that made me say "You know what? I'm gonna like Android!" But I don't miss it at all. Everything made that damn light blink. Between my S5 and my girlfriend's Note 2, the bedroom looked like a freaking rave at night. "Ooo the phone is flashing! Never mind, someone made a comment on Facebook. Didn't I set it not to do that? Doesn't matter, that light has to flash!" It drove me crazy.

Yep. It's a bit like that glowing sleep light that used to be on all Macs. It seems like a good idea at first, but in reality it's a pain in the ass. Especially if you're trying to sleep.

Steve Jobs discontinued this to cut costs.
Tim Cook and co are turning their back now on Jobs cost cutting measures. A shame as even with 150+ billion in the bank, Apple should still be looking for ways to save money.

A wise company will look at every dollar like, "it had better have a purpose, and it's purpose, when spent, is to bring itself back, and another one just like it with it."

That's how you get $150B in the bank.

How you get -$150B is to spend money like it has no value.

Exactly. Well said. That's why Jobs discontinued the coloured Apple, it made Apple not enough profits.

I think Cook is a long term issue. Will all Cook's spending (on this flashy Apple too) be good for Apple, I think only time will tell.

Jobs discontinued the coloured Apple logo because of cost? He said this? Or is this just random unlikely speculation?

Seems to me it was discontinued because the 70s era colour-scheme just wasn't relevant anymore, especially since they stopped making boring beige boxes and started making coloured plastic computers. The coloured logo just would've clashed. Jobs was making a break with the tired, old Apple that refused to get with the times. He was very style-conscious with a keen eye for details. He was of the opinion that if something wasn't beautiful and gave you joy to hold or use it shouldn't be made.

Apple does lots of things that may not directly translate into dollars but contribute to the joy of owning the device. The touch-sensitive power button on the G4-cube was hardly necessary but it sure was cool.

Actually yes he did say this. I remember him saying it. I'll have to search for a clip of him saying it.
In 1997 the only thing on Jobs mind was making Apple finically viable again. Thoughts of anything else at that time would have destroyed Apple.

It's been way too long...

Wow, that's a special kind of lazy, when 15 seconds to boot your mac (from cold shutdown) in the morning is too inconvenient for you.

I just don't see the point, what with Power Nap and background updates, plus OSX runs its optimisation scripts at night, they're not really made for shutting down and booting back up really. Its best to try and go for Linux amounts of uptime.
