Why do people want Apple to do everything in-house? They don't run their own fabs, they don't make displays, they don't build all their own datacenters. Why? Because those are commodity services that require massive investment and have short lifecycles. Apple is much better suited as a customer that can resell the value they create from those commodites at high margin.

This is very good. Use data centres that already exist as opposed to chopping trees down in some cases to build new ones. Big back end systems are used by a lot of different big name corporations. Broadband networks are the same for example.
Googles security along with Amazon's are usually good too, well they seem to resist most hacking attempts.

And those who don't like Google should simply ask themselves, have they had 'any' issues with iCloud?

Google total revenues 2020 - 182 billions
Google cloud revenues 2020 - 13 billions - 7.2% of total revenues.

Apple pays 300 millions - 2.3% of all google cloud revenues.
300 millions doesn't sound that much considering what it would cost Apple to do it themselves.

Google pays Apple between $8 billion and $12 billion per year to be the default search engine on Apple products.

I thought Apple was going to be investing in their own data centers years ago. I can imagine that this route, with a deal, has to be significantly cheaper these days. I get the security and all, but not terribly happy that some of my $ goes to Google.

That said, iCloud has been working really well for me and my family. Been using it as my primary cloud storage for years now. My whole family is nearing the 400GB mark.

This.

Alphabet is still losing money on their cloud business because they have to be constantly investing in it

Alphabet, Google's parent, detailed how much its ad business subsidizes its cloud expansion. In the fourth quarter, Google Cloud, which includes platform, infrastructure, and Workspace, delivered an operating loss of $1.24 billion on revenue of $3.83 billion, up from $2.61 billion a year ago.

Apple does not provide third-party cloud storage providers with the keys to decrypt user data stored on their servers, ensuring a strong level of security.

Google doesn't have access to the data. What's a shame?
It might have something to do with the fact that if you go out of your way to not use Google products, and spend more to get their competitor's product, you still end up supporting them.

It's not like hardware where you can look up who makes the modem or the storage of the device. Nor is it like search or browsers where one can simply use a different website or app. The end-user has no way of knowing if their purchases are helping to fund Google's business. Worse, they are being sold a branding that suggests everything is Apple.

They do build and operate data centers…but you have to understand the sheer scale of data these days.

It's a shame that they don't anticipate growth as they keep marketing their services and build their own data centres.

Not long before Apple starts hosting it themselves, seems like an easy way to save a ton of money.
