Whilst it might be surprising that the next version comes so soon, there are no doubt sound commercial reasons for shipping the best-possible iOS before the holidays!

You really think Apple is going to overhaul a UI element in a simple update? Of course not, it will be in 5.0 at the minimum. I'm not even sure Apple is convinced that their notifications system needs any tweaking.

Oh, it does....

Notifications pop on the screen one at a time, if a new one comes in straight after you have about 1 sec to read the first one. I've seen this happen a lot (probably because the 3G was in sleep mode or something). And no way to review the last few notifications. Once they're off your screen, they're gone.

It was fine in the beginning when there were only a few apps using them but now I get so many that it becomes a big problem.

Also, the way they come in during other apps is hopelessly annoying.

Gruber noted that Apple's key role in the product's development has been the creation of APIs to support recurring subscription billing via iTunes Store accounts, functionality that would presumably require another iOS update.

Hows about making iTunes music a streaming subscription service like the far more superior Spotify? Downloading mp3's is so 1990's man

Remember there may be no beta for iOS 4.3 if it doesn't feature anything new for developers (other than APIs for newspaper subscriptions which may be exclusive to "The Daily" at launch) and perhaps free MobileMe. For those that say it doesn't deserve a 4.3 update then, perhaps only 4.2.2, remember that Apple might well give it the full 4.3 treatment to show to users how significant they feel the new newspaper subscription model is.

The ability to download items in an iTunes Season Pass would be the best part of the update for me!

I hate having to wait until I get home from school to download an episode to my MacBook then stream it to my Apple TV. I would love to just be able to download it at school then stream it via AirPlay as soon as I got in the door.

What would be both cool and practical would be for Apple to release iOS 4.2.2, 4.2.3 and 4.2.4 about every 4 weeks to incrementally add the features it wants in iOS 4.3 as a final "one size fits all" unified release. This way any bugs that survive the process will not be a total train wreck.

Slower adopters can delay a version and only miss a new feature for 1-4 weeks while the bleeding edge adopters act as human shields.

The #1 thing that concerns me about Apple's current strategy is they tend to make about 30% of the entire population bleeding edge adopter human shields.

Spellbound till the tolling endeth.

Considering how I could barely use my ipod after the 4.2 update because I couldn't get used to all the new icons and features that I felt lost, 4.5 should really rock! Is it 4.4 or 4.5? Hmmm Whatever it is, I'm sure it will be feature-packed. I just hope I don't have to lose work to try out all the new features! Wow! It will take me a month to figure out all the new stuff in 4.3, so if 4.7 is right around the corner how does steve expect me to keep up? I hope I don't throw my ipod out like my imac after 10.9 came out and I couldn't handle all those new things! I mean ten-five, I think. Is it true Apache and PHP are coming to the iPod? The point is: I've never seen so many new features in the recent Apple releases! It's magical. Over

am i the only one who cared more about the "media event" part more than the IOS 4.3 part?

they can't plan a media event just for IOS 4.3...BRING ON THE THE iPrinter@!@@$#31@2

Hmm ... ok ... then all you stealth Apple employees here ... it needs tweaking. kkthx. :D

Makes no sense. 4.2 was in beta for 2 months. How would 4.3 come out with no new features (users) in 3weeks.

Perhaps someone could explain to me why another iOS update is needed. Seems to me that supporting subscriptions would be an app by app update and perhaps a billing update for the itunes servers.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

The lack of any public 4.3 betas certainly has me suspicious of this date.

was thinking this as well

will we ever see flash on an iPhone/iPad? and is that even possible with an update (i.e. is the hardware support there?)

no communication with car since 4.2

I certainly hope that apple adresses the issue of the iPhone 4/iPod running 4.2 not communicating with my carstereo anymore... Worked perfectly via usb right until I updated to 4.2!

Anybody heard anything about that? Perfectly sure Apple knows about it. There are several freds on Apple-support...
