Let's be real. Who will be texting, making calls, taking pictures, etc.. with his watch? I don't think (I hope) that's the concept of iWatch that Apple will release, because that's just dumb. I hope Apple is smarter enough to show us something with some utility.

This is Apple's PR checking to see what people are willing to pay and when they come out under you will see folks going crazy.

If they are expecting people to replace this thing every 1-3 and at $400+ is no sale for most sane people.

The price would be fine if the function, style, and battery life is there. First real test of a brand new product under Tim Cook. Curious if he has the combination of vision and nads to make something magical.

So my choice is basically buy a peripheral for my phone, or buy a retina ipad mini (example... feel free to fill in any $400 item here)?

This watch would have to do some truly amazing things for me to even be remotely interested. I have been saying that I wanted BP, glucose (which is unlikely in THIS particault watch) and some other health metrics to be truly interested. At $400 though I am not even sure what I would want, but it would have to be... magical (not just according to Apple but to me lol)

----------

Unfortunately it will be obsolete in 2 years, unlike old watches which are timeless. (No pun intended)

Not sure it will be obsolete it two years... however you do have a point.

I have a self winding Tissot that cost me about $300 ten years ago. Need no batteries, only to be worn (or wound) daily. I imagine it will be my son's watch one day. :)

People have no idea what the device does (if it exists), but are giving price ranges at which it'd sell like 'hotcakes', and what's too expensive. Lol.

People can easily say what they would and wouldn't pay for an iWatch, in the end it doesn't really matter what the feature set is. I have a pebble which I paid $160 AUD, I probably wouldn't pay much more than twice that ($320 AUD) for an iWatch

$400 USD is a price set above expectations for most on here according to comments...

Why does everyone keep throwing out prices that are lower than other smart watches. Besides iPad, when has Apple ever come in at lower pricing than expected?

$400 is fine so long as it is the best smart watch available. That's Apple's strength and that's what they'll deliver. Anyone looking for a bargain smart watch doesn't know anything about Apple and should probably get acquainted with the 2nd best offering.

That's great but your son will wonder why you gifted him this wrist strap that only tells time while everyone else will have the internet on their wrist.

Thread makes me laugh. Oh noes! Rumoured price too high for rumoured specs on rumoured device! Not buying!

I personally know I'm withholding all judgement until the thing is actually released and until we know exactly what it will encompass. Trying to gauge the utility / price ratio at this point is ludicrous IMO.

$400 is a pretty cheap for a watch if you think about it. I could care less about a smart watch though. I'd rather spend my money on a quality designer watch and not come cheap and tacky smart watch.

Cheap only if the watch lasts which the iWatch won't, you can't compare those kinds of watches to an iWatch.

Just no. I wouldn't pay more than $100 for this. Better off just picking up the phone ;)

Btw Xiaomi's smart watch sells for ¥79 (which is less than $20) and it looks great for the price.

If that's what you're into I've got a few Applel phones I can sell you. Don't worry, they look good and I think they run the latest iOS.

Hilarious that people say "not worth it" when we don't know A) what components it will have, B) what it will look like, and C) what it's functionality will be. I get that some people will not pay $400 for a watch no matter what, but c'mon people, how can you say what it should be priced at when you know basically nothing about it?

for the record, I like the fact that we don't know much about it. It'll be one of the bigger unveilings in recent apple history.

Why do you think that people need to know the feature set to know if they will buy it or not at $400? Most people in the street could give you an answer. I couldn't care less about a, b or c, i'm not paying $400 for an iWatch.

You mean poor people?
Yup, call em what you will, they won't be wearing this thing and that's OK. Not everything has to be for everyone and, as we are told over and over, there are already TONS of 'competitors' that cater to the poor- Samsung, Xiaomi, etc. There's room for variation out there.

There is a certain irony to it of course- one of the big reasons some people are poor is from buying the thing with the lowest sticker price, rather than considering things like total cost of ownership, quality, durability, etc. So buying cheap is both a symptom and a cause of poverty.

My current watch, lovely, sapphire crystal, tells time and date, cost me $350 when I bought it 35 years ago. I'll pay $400 for an iWatch, but you can be darn sure I won't be replacing it every year like I do my phone. So this first iteration better be good.

Really? So what if it looks the same but has 10 more sensors as the previous generation? You've already bought a bunch of iWatch apps so if course you will buy the new one to take advantage of all the past and future purchases you will make.

iPod touch is 200$ and I doubt an iwatch will have more hardware than an iPod touch.

They've been building and selling iPod touches for years so they've got costs down. They will price the watch as cheap as possible to compete but Apple is always the most expensive so it will be over $300

Somewhere on this forum I guessed $395 several months ago. Assuming some of the capabilities that have been projected for the device, this seems pretty reasonable. People pay $3,000 and plenty more for a Rolex that does nothing except tell time!

Not true, i'd imagine a Rolex makes those wearers feel 'special', the iWatch most likely won't have the same effect.

If it can take calls, messages and emails from the iPhone, that's fine with me.

If it just collects data and is used to track how many steps you take in one day for example, no way.

Still, I can't wait to see what it looks like and what features it has when Apple unveil it.

No, for $400, it needs to do all that WITHOUT the iPhone, and have the ability to blow me, check my glucose, and turn me into a human tazer when needed.

Well, these "expectations" are completely moronic then...
If the Samsung watches have been $300 each, and they aren't known for huge margins... OBVIOUSLY the tech in these size packages are more than $199, yeah??

So that's $400 for the US, and probably $450-$500 for Australia. I could get a brand new iPad Mini for the same price so I'll pass if that's the case.

As an idiot going through the pains of losing a phone and not knowing if I'll ever see it again smack in the middle of my contract I know where people coming up with that price point can stick that $400 :( I'll be spending at least that just to get back into the game with a used, older/lower capacity phone.
