It won't be cheap because apple doesn't do cheap. At $400, it will sell like hotcakes, just like $80 jeans, $170 shoes, $300 + purses, etc. It depends on the pitch, like all apple products. If it just works, looks elegant, and does something that others don't, it will sell well.

That's great but your son will wonder why you gifted him this wrist strap that only tells time while everyone else will have the internet on their wrist.

What makes you think that? You don't value the classics? I got my mom's old beetle from the 60's for my 16th birthday. Still have it. Coolest car ever, especially because it was her first car and it's been in the family. Sure it doesn't have bluetooth, a backup camera, all wheel drive, or even power steering, but none of that ever mattered.

Not everything is about being on the bleeding edge. I have yet to be explained why I would even want the internet on my wrist. Maybe Apple will explain that to me.

this sounds about right

it's pretty funny that there were people saying that this will become like Rolex and Patek on one hand and there are people saying that $400 is too expensive.

Anything from $200-$600 range would not surprise me.
$400 is just about where I would guess.

I guess we will find out soon what is the price.

I just want it to be round. Out of all the smart watches that have been shown off so far, the only ones that look reasonably wearable are the Moto 360 and the LG G Watch R. All the square ones look like $12 Casio's that you buy at Wal-mart.

$80 jeans and $300 purse hmm

I think Apple products are more upscale than that.

A cool 2 million.

depends on build

so what if apple built a watch that was on par(in terms of build quality) with the entry level watches from luxury brands. Tag, Tissot, etc. They would be in the $400-500 range right? Add on to that the device will be a health/fitness monitor and be a ( at a minimum ) relay for you iPhone. notifications, music controls, home automation controls etc. We all know they will not settle for a 1-2 day battery life like the rest of the current smart watches. and those are 199-299. so would 400 really be that much of a stretch for what you are getting? This device will not have the build quality of a $100 regular watch. It will be a much higher quality build.

With all of those taken into consideration, again build quality is essential if they want to achieve that price point, I think they have a good case. Obviously not everyone is going to be able to afford the mid-high range of apple's wearable. Just like all apple devices they will be towards the upper price range of the market, it is just a matter of whether or not it is deserving of the price. Talk to anyone who is "into watches" and you will quickly realize that they can easily out price your laptop.

It probably has the capabilities to interact with the Mac/iMac/iPhone etc. just like the new IOS8-equipped devices. ;)

Why does Apple have to reinvent the wheel. Just release a very thin 1.8" iPod nano remake that can pair up with your phone (or headphones) to Bluetooth. Give it the same iPhone design with wireless charging and no headphone jack. Make some first party watch mounts with fancy quick connects and let third parties go wild. Let apps download via iPhone or iPad (copy the way Android Wear does it) and make sure that the OS is touch friendly because a home button would take up precious space.
If you really want to get fancy give it wifi to download apps, stream music and video. Allow it to make wifi calling (home or iDevice Hotspot) with a Bluetooth headset. Or you can open your garage door, unlock your car, control your thermostat or turn on/off lights via wifi modules tied to your network. The possibilities are endless.
But if Apple does not do this Android Wear will. If I was a betting man I put my money on Android wear evolving with many of those functions I just listed.

I agree with your premise except that typical entry level luxury watches will cost a lot more than $400 just for the case.
A typical stainless steel case + strap/bracelet from Rolex or Panerai probably cost more than $2000 to replace.
Cases minus dial and movement from mid-market brands like Tag probably cost around $500.

So the quality of finish for this Apple watch is most likely going to be comparable to a Tissot or a Victorinox Swiss Army watch than a luxury watch.

I really hope that Apple did not choose this direction.
This would be essentially following the trails of Motorola, Samsung and LG.
The products released so far are niche products that lack mass market appeal.

$400 for what? An extension of your phone? What are you getting that your phone doesn't already have ...huh? Are we all that lazy now to pull a phone out of our pockets and see the big clock on the home screen?

Or will this mean longer lines when the iPhone 6 comes out?

I'm going to BOIL if I see some kid talking on his iWatch with a phone in the other hand!

i doubt that will happen because human beings don't want to look foolish but if that's what people want, then so be it.

I was about to post nearly the same thing.

For something that clearly will not do everything your phone will, I wouldn't buy one if these for the same reasons that I wouldn't buy a clone of my own phone.

Of course, Timmy will get on stage and make it sound better than it is, herds will get that twinkle in their eye, and they will undoubtedly sell.

Thank You!

It's too bad Re/code doesn't understand what a price range is

Just checked the re/code article. The mistake isn't in there, so either they corrected it or it was a mistake by MR, not the original article. Either way, whoever made the mistake can be forgiven. They were so shocked by the idea of Apple releasing a glorified watch as an iPhone accessory for around $400 that it's amazing they were able to type at all!

For 400$, it better be loaded with gear monitoring me from top to bottom; for that price it better tell me even when my toenails need clipping!
