Here’s an idea, make it so the apps default to the bottom of the screen instead of the top. Ya know, down there where my thumbs are. Or even better! Let me stick them wherever I want to. Brilliant!

Those Tile devices need to use GPS not Bluetooth. I went hiking in Canada and lost the keys to the rental car luckily someone picked them up and placed them on a tree stump (the hiking community is just awesome) otherwise we were screwed but afterwards I looked at getting some Tile squares but they only use Bluetooth and only responds when you're close to the tile.

I would like to buy a few Tiles, but I am not doing it because of privacy concerns. I don't like the idea of an app tracking my location permanently and having my name and e-mail address. Not only may they misuse the data, but also government may ask them for location data.

If Apple actually releases this product, I will very likely buy.

I recently discovered that lost or stolen Airpods (case and pods) are not easily found. Correct me if I'm wrong (please!), but it seems whoever finds them can simply pair them as their own. It would be great if they could be tracked with crowd-sourced data - and password protected. Ideally, lost Airpods would be useless to the non-owner.

Build this hardware into Apple devices along with the stand alone device for non-Apple things.

I have a Tile on each of my ATV remotes (attached to the lanyard) I would love to get rid of.

Let's keep throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks...

I fear it might be well too late though. The only problem i've heard about tiles after using them since launch is non replaceable batteries which they just fixed. I'm not sure if I'm willing to pay Apple $50 for the same thing

Tile's privacy policy is a bit iffy though, would feel better about Apple knowing all that location data instead.

This isn't too late, this is likely only the beginning. I've been waiting for a first party hardware company to get into this game, requiring an app to crowdsource is far less efficient and covers less area.

Looks like a nice idea

Hope Apple’s version will use all iPhones (system service, Default on) as community find, as the Tile community is too small for Tile’s Community find to be useful.
If yes that would make it reasonable that someone will pass your “Tile” within hours, or even minutes, instead of days.

Yes, they talk Bluetooth for interactive stuff, but that’s not the whole picture.

The point of the Tile ecosystem is that the last known location is uploaded to the cloud, so you know where to start looking.

Also, other Tile users can send anonymous updates for devices they pass by if they enable that service.

Ok, I didn't know that's how it worked. When I talked to the people at Best Buy they only talked about Bluetooth and how it could only locate the tile if you're close, they didn't mention anything about the device uploading it's last known location. Guess I need to stick to YouTube reviews when I have questions.

That would a cellular chip as well so it can ping your location. Talk about poor battery life.

check your spelling/grammar before you post??

Apple is a developing a new app that combines Find My iPhone and Find My Friends into a single package, according to 9to5Mac's Guilherme Rambo. The report cites sources familiar with ongoing testing of the app.

In addition to existing Find My iPhone features like Lost Mode and the ability to remotely erase a device, the report claims the new unified app includes a new "find network" feature that allows Apple devices to be tracked even when they are not connected to a Wi-Fi or cellular network.

The app would also incorporate existing Find My Friends features, including location sharing and location-based notifications from friends and family.

The report claims the app will be available on both iOS and macOS as part of Apple's so-called "Marzipan" cross-platform initiative. The app could presumably debut in iOS 13, which will be previewed at WWDC in June, but no timeframe is provided. It is allegedly codenamed "GreenTorch" internally.

Tile-like product tracker

Rambo also reports that Apple is working on a new hardware product in the form of a "tag" that can be attached to any item, similar to Tile. The tag would be paired to a user's iCloud account and rely on proximity to an iPhone.

Like the Tile, users would be able to receive notifications when their device gets too far away from the tag. To avoid false triggers, it would be possible to set a list of common locations to be ignored like a work office so that the item can be left at those locations without the user being notified.

The report adds that users will also be able to store their contact information in the tag and receive a notification when it is found. Apple may leverage its hundreds of millions of active devices to create a crowdsourced network that helps its users find any lost item in tandem with this product.

No release timeframe was provided for Apple's product tracker, but perhaps it will show up alongside new iPhones in September.

Not convinced about the tags per se, but this is where Apple would be if Steve and/or Steve were still here: products and specifically products inside the ecosystem rather than pissing about with services and promoting the likes of Eddy into design decisions.

Smart home is ripe for disruption; it is sitting there as an open goal. Mesh networking that Mom and Pop can set up and extend i.e. Unify power but Apple simplicity. Hopefully we'll see this when the crooks in charge now are finally jailed for investor fraud.

Nobody is charged with criminal fraud.

Re: mesh, I assume Apple is assuming that 5G will render Wi-Fi obsolete (I don’t agree with that contention).
