Amazing numbers. My AAPL stock has served me well.

I find these number most interesting. Look at desktop and laptop sales. (First column is Q3 209, second is Q4 2008 and the third is Q4 2009)

Apples needs a "mainline" desktop. They have some nice portables but their desktop lineup has only "niche products" that are no t in line with what most people want. If they had a mainstream desktop I bet sales would more than double

It doesn't seem to be affecting the sales figures yet.

Apple could still give us G5's and they'd still be having record sales.. LOL

They offer a dual core in the mini, and a quad core in the pro. I don't think they're gonna offer a tri core in a bigger case just for the hell of it.

Does anyone know if this is the first quarter of the new subscription accounting rules? Might account for some of the record breaking numbers if it is. But then again, the 3 million mac is still impressive, no matter how they count the beans.

In accordance with the subscription accounting treatment required by GAAP, the Company recognizes revenue and cost of goods sold for iPhone™ and Apple TV® over their estimated economic lives. Adjusting GAAP sales and product costs to eliminate the impact of subscription accounting, the corresponding non-GAAP measures* for the quarter are $12.25 billion of “Adjusted Sales” and $2.85 billion of “Adjusted Net Income.”

So desktop sales are down to even lower than they were a year ago.

Yup. They’ve been down all year. They ruined their year over year growth trend for desktops.

I think even just a price drop would bolster sales through the holidays.

I’m beginning to think they don’t care about desktops anymore.

Tonight El Jobso will bathe in a million haters' tears (many of whom troll these very forums).

Sucks to be you guys. :D

So I bought some Apple shares in January for $86. Good investment you think?

Only problem is that I sold them all in April for $113

"A recent change in generally accepted accounting principles allows the company to declare revenue from iPhone sales as it comes in, rather than spread out over the two-year span of customers' contracts. Apple has not yet changed its accounting practices, but if it had, the company said it would have earned $12.3 billion. "

I sure as hell hope they do.... I love my Imac but am ready for an upgrade. Have been since April when the first rumors of a price cut/bump came up.

This is what I wanted to know about. Thanks.

Because honestly like a lot of us have been saying the past couple of weeks... most users don't need nor care about quad core.
Did you take a look at the hardware and pricing? A quad core processor isn't some luxury item either. There are plenty of misconceptions and people that are not informed.

I have read all the threads on here and the back and forth debates. I am just telling you from my experiences, most Mac users are not the hardcore users you see on here, and don't care about quad core.

And to think I bought Apple stock when it was $15/share. I now have 4x as many shares at over $200 each!

Actually I think it's *consumers* who don't care about desktops anymore....and the Apple numbers are showing it. People want portables!

Seriously though, they do need to update their desktop line, maybe it'll spark sales. But honestly I hear more and more people say "I don't want to lose the portability with a desktop machine!".

Way to go Apple!

Interesting that on the one hand, folks are saying that the use of dual-core chips hasn't affected sales, while others are showing how desktop sales are in persistent decline. These views are at odds with each other.

I for one believe that underpowered iMac CPUs are contributing to the desktop decline. By how much? I don't know. But to say that these sales figures show that the CPU doesn't matter is incorrect. Perhaps it may be said to indicate that CPUs in the laptop line are adequate for now, but the desktop picture is murky at best.

That being said... gimme some new iMacs already!

Indeed. And according to marketing, they're not really interested in desktops, either.

Goes to show that the folks around here aren't quite as in synch with the market as they think they are...

I'd be pissed if it came down to being forced to use a laptop. Hell, might even build a hackintosh at that point.

My wife has a MBP, that's good enough. You know how often we use it out of the house... I can think of 3 times in the past year, and that is with both of us taking online and physical classes in college.

That's a lot of Macs. Damn those Laptop Hunter ads ;)

No, those ads are just what Apple needs. I can't believe MS was so stupid. Think about that they are doing. They position Apple as the product everyone wants if only they could aford it.

What a dumb way to promote your product, as being what people of modest means have to settle for.

I'm not talking about taking a laptop out of the house. A lot of people in my family and my wife's family don't want to lose the portability IN the house.

My Mom is retired, she would LOVE an iMac. But she doesn't want to be chained to the desk all day long.

Not doubt, you, much like me could never live without a desktop machine. I'm not saying they should go away....I just saying for a large section of the Apple population (the ones that just use the machine to email, surf, iPhoto, etc), are clearly choosing the portables to be....well.....portable. Whether that be in the living room, in the bedroom, or away from the house.
