The iPad business continues to disappoint.

That's interesting.

Noticed that too. Come to think of it, I don't know anyone who has replaced the iPad they have, wonder if the masses are not upgrading at all. Mine is iPad 2 and I haven't seriously thought of replacing it...functions too well!

I know what you mean! My almost 3 year old iPad 2 works perfectly fine. No need to upgrade.

Gross margin for the quarter was 39.4%.
$164.5 billion in cash and marketable securities.

The margin is the important news. It will go UP next quarter as Apple introduces higher margin iPhone6 and iTime devices.

70+% of the cash is offshore. Apple cannot retire stock with it. However if they have been silently accumulating shares in offshore accounts when the stock was $490 a share and the US allows them to repatriate funds for under an 8% tax (it should be -5%), then AAPL could literally GO PRIVATE or at minimum offer a $10 a share dividend. More than once.

Watch out!

iPads are a utility device, like Macs, AppleTV and iTime. iPhones are the annuity. Take note of my characterization.

Rocketman

When the numbers first came out the stock dropped well over 1% even though the EPS and margins were better than expected. I suppose the talking heads will say that's because guidance was on the low end. Still it seems these days no matter what Apple announces Wall Street will find a way to turn it into a negative.

The street consensus was $1.23 (a fact the MR article omits). The old rule of thumb that anything less than a 10% beat will be taken as underwhelming holds true once again.

I guess it won't be long before iPods shrink down and are lumped into the 'Other' category.

It's also interesting that the iPhone is Apple's most successful product. I guess it's one of the main things people associate Apple with, like the iPod 10 years ago.

Other than myself everyone I know who has an iPad has an iPad2, 3 or original Mini. Most folks use them for general web surfing and email so no real reason for them to upgrade.

My original iPad is still kicking (although I don't use it anymore, I passed it on to a family member).

The iPads are really sturdy devices.

And yet Microsoft didn't beat (I believe it came in at $0.55 when the consensus was $0.60) yet that stock is up after hours.

I don't know why the iPod has to be killed because it has low numbers relative to Apple's other products. For one thing it is surely still profitable. For a second, its continued existence probably helps with iTunes Store sales. For a third, the name iPod always was open to interpretation. It was never iMusicmachine. It was a pod, capable of carrying things. Before the iPad came out, I thought Apple might call it iPod slate, in that I thought it would be a touch device (which it was) without cellular (which was half-true), like the iPod touch. It's just a name. You could say the iPod is a booming business today, if only the iPad had been called the iPod slate.

I still think the iPod name is valuable and transferable to other things, perhaps even to the wrist device Apple is coming out with.

It's amazing when you take a look at the dips between the iPhone releases apple actually has a very balanced healthy line up of products.

Shame the ipod is no longer selling in any numbers but glad to see the mac side is as healthy as the iPad! I love laptops and think they're a worthy part of the line up no matter what people say about them having no place for a post pc era and not working in the future. They're the platform that everything is made on for every other device so it's great to see.

Check those numbers and let me know. I know only that quarter after quarter it's always the same for AAPL: anything less than a 10% beat and the markets say ho-hum. Perhaps because Apple is expected to grow earnings and Microsoft isn't?

The iPod lives in every single IOS device today, 1 of the 3 major things steve claimed about the iPhone was its iPod capability.

Tablet market is saturated? Mac Sales were up and Ipad sales were down slightly. Which has the higher margin? Also with iPads people tend to want to get them when they first come out but then they are less of a need so people don't get them particularly late into the cycle. This is why I think it is suspicious for Apple to be releasing them at Christmas time instead of during the summer.

Well I can certainly understand why Apple doesn't care about computers anymore after looking at their sales.
