will it create more jobs?

or just few billionaires?

I wonder how much employees apple added over last three years or so ...

it is a lot of money!!!

Netbooks are DEAD. And BURIED. Who the hell cares about these POS anyway?

I believe that netbooks have a very tough road ahead. But they still do serve quite a few purposes that the iPad does not offer:

-real, not virtualized, keyboard
-price
-offering common ports (USB, HDMI/VGA out, etc)
-offering ability to plug in items to expand the system (hard drives, flash keys)
-offering far more storage for the dollar
-slightly larger screens than iPad...11-12" instead of 9" on iPad
-install any darn software you wish...no Big Brother by Apple
-familiar Windows UI
-run popular, full blown apps you have been for years (MS Office, browsers, chat clients, etc)
-ability to print to thousands of printers rather than iPad's select 8 HP printers
-ability to actually store your files (not just mp3s or videos)...such as PDFs, email attachments, MS Office, ZIP files, etc.

Again, I'm just listing why Netbooks can survive. The iPads have their pros, too. But the inability to save files on my iPad is a huge, huge disappointment.

I think Apple should be commended. They have developed a product that people like and sells. They have kept their overhead balanced well within the pricing of their products. Maybe its time to pass a little savings on to the customers....as in offering more hardware for the price, or lowering the price in models of high profit. I think its great that apple is making lots of money, but remember its profits on top of expenditure.

So its kind of like they are making huge profits off an iphone, ipad and macbook. I reazlie its a supply/demand price point for these, but nothing is to say they couldnt offer more hard drive space, RAM, etc for the dough. They should reduce the cost of the build it up options which are pretty high.

Uh, doesn't matter even a little bit so long as iPhone is still gulping down the vast majority of the profits within the industry and making good solid sales numbers.

End users don't care how much money their phone vendor makes. They care about if they get the latest games or apps. And they won't get the apps and games when the iPhone will have about 3% marketshare in the future if Apple can't stop the trend.

Developers like Rovio already today make more money with ads for Android then they ever did with selling Angry Birds for iOS. And developers first care about how much money they make when they choose which platform(s) to develop for.

Yeah but that's obvious because Windows 7 has sold over 400 million copies in the last two years alone. That's 8x the entire mac installed base for just one version of Windows. I know a lot of Apple users like to think Windows is dying, but it's just the opposite, it's doing ridiculously well and trounces the Mac by any measure. So of course there is greater potential to "cannibalize" Windows sales, though I don't think with the iPad numbers we are seeing anyone can claim that whatsoever. They just don't sell that many relatively speaking.

So assuming your 400 million number is correct, that's 200 million in a year. If Apple just sold 10 million in a quarter, that means 40 million, probably more in a year.

You don't think a brand new platform reaching 20% the sales of one as established as windows is big deal, especially a new product that's only been around a couple years?

And that's not even including iPhone and iPod touch on that same operating system and running the same apps.

By the way, how much is MS making on each sale of the OS, especially considering how many copies are on dirt cheap netbooks and pcs?

Kind of wish the last guy (asking about sequential growth of Mac sales) had asked about the back to school promo and the "new" competition from Microsoft and PC makers in offering a Xbox with purchase and how students are accepting the two offers in the market.

When you whore out your OS to every box-maker under the sun, and get way with having it ship with a lot of junk, you'll get big share numbers.

Not impressive by any means.
At least try to hide your jealousy.

At first I was surprised by all the fanboy comments in here, but as I started looking at the names of posters, I realized it was just a few people professing their love of apple over and over again.

MS' offer isn't "competition."

The younger market wants Apple gear. Apple need not offer anything in order to move units.

PCs are heading downhill.

Fixed.

Ad-based business work well, only and ONLY if you are BIG. Seriously big.

If you are not big, ads is a stupid business plan. Ads demand HIGH number of people looking at you (the vast majority ignoring) then from that, a small clicking.

Rovio make it, because first they sell it, then become big, then came live with Ads.

Try the reverse. Don't work well.

If do you have any doubt setup your business - could be simple, like lemonade drinks - and live only from the ads. Good luck with that.

Based on Windows 7 sales I would have to disagree that they are heading 'downhill' - just Apple gaining a greater % of that market.

At least try to hide your standards.

Fixed.

Are you seriously going to compare a universally-licensed OS to the Apple business model?

Inconsistent, often bargain-bin vs. consistent, Premium.

These comparisons were over and done with years ago. It's getting old. We all know the score these days and what's behind market share numbers.

Tim Cook recently said "We don’t want iPhone to just be for the rich."

Tim Cook JUST said: "In terms of playing in different price points, the 3GS is available today in the US for $49 with contract."

"As we've seen and as I'm reminded time and time again when I look at China data, it's up to us to convince people to maybe spend a little more for a materially better experience and product."

I would like to see Apple preparing a version of the 3GS for the American pre-paid market. VirginMobile, or whatnot.

...the iPhone will have about 3% marketshare in the future if Apple can't stop the trend.

You sound like the apple fanboys who would say that Windows will end up with 3% market share if the "trend" of OSX rising and Windows dropping.

And you're ignoring the fact that iPad shares the same OS as iPhone. iPhone has lost a bit of market share but iPad is taking virtually all of the tablet market so far. Not to mention that the "trend" is based on the period when iPhone hasn't been updated (and yet sales continue to rise), once the next generation is released sales will spike and that "trend" will get disrupted (just like it has every time the iPhone has been updated).

At first I was surprised by all the fanboy comments in here...

Apple just had an absolutely giant quarter. They are now the second most valuable company in the world. Really, THIS is the thread where you're going to accuse those of being positive about Apple of being "fanboys" and "jealous"? Hilarious.

It saddens me, though I shouldn't be surprised, that Mac sales on that first graph were so low compared to everything else. I might start becoming one of those psychos who claims Apple is "dumbing down" their desktop OS...

$76.2 Billion.... That will buy more than a few pizzas for the company picnic.

I think the key here is that they need to keep inovating, keep brining out new products. They have the momentum, and the danger is stagnation.

New media coming to iTunes later this quarter....finally a video subscription service maybe? 1080p?

In my opinion the 'budget' iPhone will not be the 3GS, it's simply too old, what about facetime? Apple won't market a new budget iPhone with basic features left out. More like an iPod Touch with phone capabilities, just my opinion.

Nothing to be surprised about. It's industry-wide, though Macs are doing much better in growth than PCs.

It's the Post-PC transition underway.
