Well, the smartphone market grew by about 20% from Q1 to Q2. 19 million+20% is about 23 million. And you'd expect that the iPhones sales are above the market increase.

So *nobody* expected that, it's just a number you pulled out of your butt.

Mac sales and revenue also shows that in a not to distant future Apple will probably drop all pro users and just switch completely to consumer electronics devices.
 
The product transition is likely a reference to either the iPhone launching during the next quarter or a push back for the usual iPod refresh to October/November meaning a larger decline in iPod sales next quarter that would have possibly been expected previously.

If it's so unsurprising, yes, WHY DIDN'T YOU buy stock in the 90's?

I'll tell you why: Because Apple was borderline out of business...literally. Not for 1 year...but for many years in the 90s. In fact, since the late 80s Apple was not doing well at all...then in 1999 (roughly), Apple began to turn around.

Anyone who wasn't the riskiest investor would have steered far away from Apple from 1989-1999.

But back to this headline...amazing.

Yeah but that's obvious because Windows 7 has sold over 400 million copies in the last two years alone. That's 8x the entire mac installed base for just one version of Windows. I know a lot of Apple users like to think Windows is dying, but it's just the opposite, it's doing ridiculously well and trounces the Mac by any measure. So of course there is greater potential to "cannibalize" Windows sales, though I don't think with the iPad numbers we are seeing anyone can claim that whatsoever. They just don't sell that many relatively speaking.
 
product transition

I think the "product transition" must have something to do with the halting of a section of the iPod line. The question that brought on this answer was in regards to a less-than-usual September forecast... September has historically seen a boost from the announcement of new iPods, meaning the only reason the forecast would be less is because they aren't anticipating that result this year.
 
Product Transition

I think three items here

1) Low cost iPhone and discontinue the iPod touch

2) MBA becomes the main focus with 4GB/128GB standard

and

3) the margin will be lower if they go all out SSD in the MBP and Mac Mini as well.

and sadly MacBook will be discontinued though i had like to see Core i5 and 128GB SSD in macbook as well ($999)

"Easier" has nothing to do with sold units - if Macs were as bad as PCs they would be equally cannibalized...his comment was obviously sarcastic, and that's why I quoted it above.

When you whore out your OS to every box-maker under the sun, and get way with having it ship with a lot of junk, you'll get big share numbers.

Not impressive by any means.
 
What amazes me is how many people I know are still stretching themselves wafer-thin by buying things on credit. Most of that profit is from The United States, and we're supposed to still be in a weakened economy here, yet so many of my friends are still saying, "Oh, man... I can't wait to get an iPad!"

One friend of mine (who is an actual rocket-scientist!) bemoans being stuck in his old house in a crappy neighborhood because he's significantly upside-down on his mortgage, yet keeps buying motorcycles and toys, dismissing his credit woes by saying, "Well, I have a good paying job... I'll pay it off eventually." I can't help but think how scary that is.

Anyway, I'm glad so many people are spending so much money on Apple stuff, because I like an underdog as much as anyone else, and their stuff is pretty nice. Apple is certainly much less the underdog it once was. Hopefully, this means our economy is stronger than it appears!
 
Apple doesn't do "budget"

They have to when they want to compete with Android (and soon WP7). Otherwise it'll be again a world where Apple once had a headstart but ended with 3% marketshare like Mac vs PC. And I doubt most iPhone users then care how much money Apple makes when they have to wait 5 years to get some app or game for iOS too.
 
Well iPhone is losing marketshare now. That's the point.

Uh, doesn't matter even a little bit so long as iPhone is still gulping down the vast majority of the profits within the industry and making good solid sales numbers.
 
International sales accounted for 62 percent of the quarter's revenue!

And one new Apple Store every 50 hours for the next two months... they really are pushing international sales!!!!

I'm sure we'll see more of an international focus in the future with international launches taking place at the same time as American ones. Apple simply can't ignore the Global market. And, they haven't even made a dent in China yet...
