Developers like Rovio already today make more money with ads for Android then they ever did with selling Angry Birds for iOS. And developers first care about how much money they make when they choose which platform(s) to develop for.

That only works up to a point, first you can't just stuff all sorts of apps with ads, they take up valuable screen space and look unprofessional.

Even games with ads are not so well received by users, especially Angry Birds where the ads slow the game down or obscure parts of the screen. If you look at the reviews on the Android market, many users are complaining how intrusive the ads are and demanding an ad-free version.

Rovio then released an ad free free version on the Amazon appstore, same price as iOS 99c. So they know this is a problem.

It saddens me, though I shouldn't be surprised, that Mac sales on that first graph were so low compared to everything else. I might start becoming one of those psychos who claims Apple is "dumbing down" their desktop OS...

This may also give the "They are abondoning the Pro's" more ammo as well. However, I think after the Final Cut X fiasco, they are pretty well stocked up as it is.

The real key at this point will be what Apple does with the Mac Pro's. If they really let it linger or give it a "prosumer" update, the professional market will get even more upset.

Tech companies typically don't pay out dividends. That's a well known fact. And Apple has very large cash holdings, for whatever reason that may be. So, don't hold your breath.

It is so sad for the iPod line to account for such a small percentage of profit.

I hope Apple can somehow re energize the line so the shuffle, nano and Touch can regain its appeal.

They have to when they want to compete with Android (and soon WP7). Otherwise it'll be again a world where Apple once had a headstart but ended with 3% marketshare like Mac vs PC. And I doubt most iPhone users then care how much money Apple makes when they have to wait 5 years to get some app or game for iOS too.

You show a complete lack of understanding of the mobile phone market.

It's not about "smart phones" and "dumb phones", it is about "premium phones" and "cheap phones". In the last two years, a lot of the "cheap phones" have changed from being "dumb" to "smart". As a result, the "smart" phone market has grown tremendously, but it isn't the "premium" market anymore.

Take the number of iPhones as a percentage of the total phone market. That number has been growing year after year after year. And there is no end to it. Apple's goal was to sell one percent of all phones. Looks like they are selling about eight percent now, and the number is still growing. Android sales will stop growing when the transition from "dumb" to "smart" phones is finished. WP7 sales have been reported to grow from "not very much" to "not very much".

Just get a chart that charts only computer unit sales (workstation, desktop, laptop, netbook) sales. Apple is now #3 in the USA and if everyone has the same growth rate for the next year, they will be #5 world wide next year. If you take revenue, they are #4 world wide today, possibly #3. If you take profits, they are #1.

This just about describes the situation.

There is also a future product transition that we are not going to talk about today.
The word 'transition' doesn't sound like iPhone 5 to me (because that is technically more of a development than a transition.
I think it might refer to Arm architecture in the MB Air.

What's the best broker to buy APPL stock, just curious?
If you don't have a brokerage account at all, do some independent research. TD Ameritrade has class leading trading platforms and some great investment education. Barons has rated their advanced trading tool as #1 in four of the last 5 years.

Which is exactly why I think the "future product transition" will likely involve a radical change in the ipod strategy....

Dividends are offered by companies which are no longer "growth" companies. Apple has been around for a while but they really reinvented themselves with the iPod. Dividends are really a slow way of eventually closing up shop and giving back money to the shareholders.

MSFT tries to use dividends to appear more attractive to investors but if you do the math, you are much better off being a long term investor in a company like Apple and then selling off stock when a big jump in price occurs than from collecting dividends. You can make even more money as a short term investor in growth companies than you can buying into stocks like MSFT.

As an Apple shareholder, I am very pleased.

Congratulations to Steve Jobs and company for a job well done.

Please buy more Apple products, everyone!

I am not very sure if the iPad's graph is yet to burst or has already.

That's probably the best graph for any product that I have seen in the history of Consumer Electronics.

Remember, this product 'category' in itself was first released less than 1.5years ago.

Congratulations Apple.

Yeah but that's obvious because Windows 7 has sold over 400 million copies in the last two years alone. That's 8x the entire mac installed base for just one version of Windows. I know a lot of Apple users like to think Windows is dying, but it's just the opposite, it's doing ridiculously well and trounces the Mac by any measure. So of course there is greater potential to "cannibalize" Windows sales, though I don't think with the iPad numbers we are seeing anyone can claim that whatsoever. They just don't sell that many relatively speaking.

They sold so many licensees because they announced the end of support for XP. By and large, businesses ignored Vista. Microsoft forced the issue.

The fact is, they are losing share in the consumer market to Apple. The Macs growth has been higher than PC industry growth for 21 quarters now.

No.

I am an Apple shareholder, and I absolutely do not want Apple to pay me dividend.

I know I would not be able to generate as much return from the money than Apple.

Neither can any company on this planet.

It's just amazing how much of these they're selling and to think only a year ago some people were saying the device would 'fail'

This just about describes the situation.

People still need simple devices for running, hiking and other outdoor activities.
Bringing a phone would cause my brain to be uneasy through out the whole day.

Which is exactly why I think the "future product transition" will likely involve a radical change in the ipod strategy....

Agreed, I can't come up with anything right now but let's hope Apple can fix it.

I agree and I was among them.

Saw those hitler referenced videos on youtube. But that was I guess one side of it; the rest was what the product actually was which most of us geeks missed out on.

Never intended to by the iPad when I looked at first. After a few months, its struck me, I think it's worth it for most of the work that I do at present. I wish it ran the legendary terminal but I'm really happy for what it does and how great it accomplishes the same.

This is precious, from Tim:

"we believe it is much easier for iPad 2 to cannibalize Windows sales than Mac sales..." :D

That actually makes a lot of sense. A significant chunk of the 'netbook' market has been eaten by the iPad, and for whatever stupid reason most of them ran a version of Windows. (At least most of the ones which could be easily found at retail, anyway.)

Yeeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! Hoorray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My life is so much better now that Apple had another record quarter!!! I'm going to call everyone I know who uses Windows and make fun of them. Personally, I wish Apple would raise their prices across the board so that they could make even more profit/

Another good think is gas is going up again too, I'm hoping for somewhere between $4.50 and $5.00 a gallon by Labor Day. I want Exxon to do well too. I just love their gas and oil.
