Can I download Safari 11 on Sierra, or must I have High Sierra?

I’m running safari 11 beta on Sierra, I can’t remember exactly where I got it but I think I just searched for safari builds on one of the beta program pages and it showed up for download.

No idea why Apple still working on Safari for desktop... Let the poor thing die already - nobody cares.

I never understood the hatred for safari, I’ve used a lot of different browsers on Mac and safari has been the only one that hasn’t given me any trouble.

The only thing I hate more than an ad, is an ad that thinks it knows what I want, or an ad that feels like someone is stalking me.
I don't find targeted ads compelling, mostly I find them dangerous. nobody should have that much info about someone without permission.
I don't understand the argument that some people are making regarding apple also collecting data on its users. first of all, apple is collecting data on its own users. The web history of any person that happens to be on the internet should not be the property of advertising companies. it should belong to that person, and if they want to sell their data, they can sell it, but the advertising company should have to pay for it, and it certainly should have an off switch.

You holding the line. :)

Everyone tracks us. Apple, google, Microsoft.... Only difference is how, and what for. And with new rules Trump signed in the US that lets your ISP collect and sell your browsing and App usage - what browser you are on is irrelevant. At&t, TW, Verizon, Comcast are all tracking us at the pipe.

So, Apple, are you going to reject $3B from Google for keeping their search on iOS? Or, perhaps, $3B trumps your (phony) privacy allegiance?
Look at it this way, While everyone knows Google is selling every piece of you they can to the highest bidder, they also sorta have the market cornered on the search engine. I've tried to stop using google, but its hard to find something else that works very well. Duckduckgo seems alright, but only for obvious things.

What apple knows is that 99% of people will likely use google most of the time anyway, and those that care enough, will switch it to something else. Just because google is the default, doesn't mean its the only one.

They (Apple) just want to make sure they are the only ones that know what you're doing online so the value of their telemetry data is worth more $$$$
Well that's an awfully cynical way of looking at it. You're a real glass is half empty kinda fella aren't ya

I'd be more impressed if Apple stopped accepting $3B/year secretly from Google for allowing them to be the default search engine on iOS.
It's not secret if we all know about it and it's just a default search engine. Who the hell cares. Something has to be the default engine.

Google is doing something very similar on Chrome where they are going to start to neuter non-google ads by default. They'll exploit their position in the browser market to enhance their advertising. Apple will do the same on iOS and Mac Safari if they aren't already. Why else do you think these giant companies give us 'free' web browsers if not to help their advertising businesses. Firefox is at least transparent in telling people that's how they make money. These 'good guys' like Apple and Google try to pretend they're helping consumers when really they just want all that data to themselves.

What should apple do? Send a text to everybody's phones letting them know google is paying to be their default search engine? The fact that they are has been common knowledge for as long as I can remember

The new rules allowing your ISP to collect and sell your browsing history is just one more reason to use a secure VPN. It encrypts everything between my computer and the VPN server. All my ISP can see is that my computer is passing encrypted data back and forth with one server (that doesn't keep any logs of my surfing). My personal favorite is Private Internet Access but there are several good ones out there anywhere from $0 to $4.00 per month.
[doublepost=1505538439][/doublepost]Thank you Apple :)

They dont sell your data, they sell spots to categories you may fit in based on the data they have on you.

Advertising is one thing. Creepily tracking users to serve targeted ads is something completely different.

Thank you Apple!
I think this is the crux of the issue. I don’t mind adverts if I’m visiting a site that is providing content. However I massively dislike seeing adverts that reflect my browsing habits verbatim. Apple isn’t stopping ads here but limiting tracking which is not only a good thing from a security POV it also benefits consumers. It prevents them from getting targeted ads that might put them in a bad place financially! Imagine a gambling addict getting betting sites constantly? Or a fashion addict getting nothing but the latest fashion brands. Targeted ads are like credit cards in that they encourage bad spending habits that the user can ill afford.

We're probably going to need something like semi-automatic micropayments to sustain popular websites that currently rely on ad revenue.
