Microsoft makes software, vendors give you the option of what hardware you want to run it on.

Apple is not using any special hard drive here. Its a regular old drive with a proprietary port and thermal monitoring.

OSX is the stepchild at Apple now. iOS has completely raped the development of OSX. Any longtime Mac user knows that.

What the point of sexy hardware if you have to blow and beg only Apple to fix it? I mean come on, really? Just the ram is upgradeable now? Apple wants to sell sealed, disposable products. You are good to buy them because they are trendy and in your mind fashionable.

ROFL sad to think that the future of hardware at least on apples side may become so locked up there will really be little you can do for your self.

Still I say 90 perfect of people will care not; just like they don't care about upgrades for their cars. Just as long as it runs they move on with their little lives. :p

Exactly, everyone moaning on here is just a small subset of the population that might even try to change their HDD's. I would bet that half the people posting on this thread would never change their iMac's HDD - they just want the option to be easy if they were to .

Odds are in 2 months suitable replacements will be on the market making this whole discussion a complete waste of time.
not even necessary...

multiple threads in the iMac forum of people successfully replacing the HDD, and having no problems at all.

This is just OWC stirring up the ****** and causing a ruckus...

They'd better not pull this malarky with the MBP line...

Only a matter of time I believe in the near future the Pro is suppose to get smaller if it does I can see stuff like this also going on there. Oh well that the breaks.

13 pages and we've come full circle, lol.

Maybe add an update regarding OWC's credibility.
the sad part is, no matter how many times it's posted people refuse to read at least a page or even the last few posts before spouting off at the mouth so everyone in here still has their panties in a bunch worrying about how apple is screwing them.

I questioned OWC's credibility the second i read this article and posted about it, seems to have been skipped over until recently ;):D

sometimes, i wish people would read, but they don't so I'll make my fonts BIGGER!! :D:D:D:D:D

This is a lie, OWC doesn't know what they are talking about, perhaps it's an isolated incident, but numerous people on these boards have replaced the HDD in their iMacs with NO problems!!!

And that thinking is what put MS where they are today. No? Perhaps there is a long change in the wind.

Oh I know. I have no brand loyalty here. When I see that down trend (probably about 3-4 years off IMO) I will sell and monitor others.

But yes I can see that, as a long time apple enthusiast, that this would be upsetting.

It's kinda sad how Apple is moving. The day I can't put a proper SSD in my MBP, I'm out (same if I have to jailbreak OS X). It would not surprise me if they made it impossible to put your own drives in portables too.

There is a possibility that the MBP I'm getting next month is my last Mac, that would be kind of a sad thought, since I find the OS and general quality of the hardware to be quite good.

xxBurtonwhatever: Can you provide evidence?

I'm surprised that Mac Rummors, from all the sources, hasn't checked their own orums about this! They should really update the news before this goes into another gate issue.

sigh, i know soooo sad!! Also sad that everyone still insists on NOT READING

My efforts are to no avail... even size 5 font didn't work :(

macrumors really just needs to take the article down and replace it with a new one or at least add a note that OWC is full of ******!!!

edit- I'll quote in hopes a second time will help, but who am i kidding... let the kids keep screaming in the pool, I guess they will learn one day, and if not oh well!

as a apple developer...

I am dumbfounded that Apple would go to such a length to hurt it's users!!!

I have had macs since my first 128k and this is the first time I am ready to switch! I was going to get a new iMac and now... Not so much!

yeah go look in the iMac forum... there are numerous threads of people replacing their Hard drives and not one mentions this.

Can you provide proof that you can't replace the hard drive? Because the only article i see anywhere about this is from OWC...

I can provide anecdotal evidence (experience) of that the 2009 and 2010 iMacs develop sensor issues (and thus noise issues) when installing third party hard drives (even of the same brand). As I work as an Apple Certified Macintosh Technician, we have had several requests for hard drive upgrades (and have tried) without success.

As for the new ones, the OWC article is the first I'm hearing of it. I'll probably prod around in one of them when I get one into the shop, but until that point I can't provide anything.

99% of the people using an iMac, however, would never know this is an issue.

Or care...

If you are a DIY type computer person, then yeah, I can see getting irate. If hard drives failed quicker than a Hollywood actor's marriage and there was only one shop in town, then yeah, I can see one getting steamed at the lack of repair facility options.

However, at least for me and my past four Macs, since 1995, I have been fortunate that none have ever had a hard drive failure that needed replacing and I never had enough stuff to put on my hard drive that would make me say, I need a bigger hard drive. And before I ever got close to filling up my hard drive or fear of it failing, I was usually in the market to get something new to keep up with the times. :apple:

So it would seem to be more of an isolated incident, maybe a problem with something else, but the fact that other people have swapped out the drives makes this article MOOT imo. OWC has a tendency for BS, and it's really showing here.

Perhaps this may be true, and if it is real shame on apple, but so far evidence of multiple posters saying they have done the upgrade with no problem VS one article of OWC saying it doesn't work has me leaning with OWC is full of it!

I received my iMac 27, 3.4 ghz a few days ago, and immediately upgraded the RAM to 16GB (from OWC with a rebate for the installed set). No problems, and the instructions were in the user manual.

I have sent off my iMac to have a VERTEX 3 SSD installed in the SECOND bay which is a 2.5" bay without the issues noted in this article. Keeping the 2TB HDD drive right where it is, with the 7-pin SATA wire as is. No Problems expected. AND... now that the SATAIII (6gb/s) has been enabled, I will have a screamer of a booting system and almost instant launching of photoshop, lightroom, and other programs I use. (I sent it off because I don't have a "clean room", and anyone that's opened an iMac knows that dust is the enemy when removing the screen.

I should also mention that I recently also purchased a new MBP 17". Apple has the instructions on how to replace the HDD/SSD in the user manual that comes with the computer. I replaced the installed drive with a Vertex 3 240GB drive, and the computer SMOKES! I also upgraded the RAM, which was also referenced in the user manual.

Apple is clearly not trying to bar people from managing their computer peripherals, and my guess is that they didn't put the instructions in for the iMac for the drive bays, BECAUSE of the difficulty in getting into the system and the potential for damage. Not an issue as far as I'm concerned because I have a decent tech company who has done many of these without issue. (NOT OWC).

I'm sorry -- you can't boot from an external drive? A little fugly, but problem solved.

Regardless of how much truth there is in this story, Apple should let users easily replace hard disks / SSDs in all their machines.

I suggest you read the article instead of insult us because if you did you would see all the evidence you provided was from previous versions the iMac. The latest revision is were the change is. So I suggest you follow you own suggested and read it before you make yourself look like a fool.

I don't see this as being a problem for many people for very long. Lets sit down for math class...

iMac + iPad + ARM + SSD + Lion = 30" iPad with keyboard.

Nobody bothers trying to upgrade the memory of a tablet, nobody will bother trying to upgrade the memory of a 30" tablet.

I just don't see why Apple is going this direction.

I checked the first two pages of the iMac forums a few minutes ago, and the only hard drive reference that could be found on the 2011 were one whom had fan issues, as OWC stated would occur.

I'll grant you, OWC has far from a clean track record when it comes to bashing other manufacturers (OCZ thingy is a case in point), but it really would not surprise me the least if Apple did this. However, until sufficient evidence has been provided otherwise (please, just link to some places where people have gone through with this upgrade, the buren of proof is strictly speaking with you), one can assume that Apple are a bunch of greedy whores. As they always are (believe me, dealing with Apple internally is far worse than ever having to deal with them as a customer).
