apple certified resellers will sell on same day too, im assuming.

any thoughts about buying directly from an apple retailer vs. buying from an authorized reseller like Fry's or best buy?

Obviously, Apple has the B2S promotion and education pricing going on. Any other meaningful differences?

And there's the honest reinforcement of my original claim. I wonder what the non-almost everyones are experiencing. When the pro-hype people need hesitant words like "damn-near" and "almost" means the OS will be business as usual. If you are using the basic OS programs and few others, I have no doubt OSX 10.7 will be flawless. No doubt at all.

^^^^

Issues.

And I don't mean with the OS.

Snow Leopard worked for dev's, still screwed people by wiping their drives though didn't it.

The number of users who experienced this was extremely low. Many on these boards couldn't even reproduce it.

There is always an element of risk. You can choose to *not* go by the preview test results, and just assume everything and anything. Most of us aren't that wrong in the head though.

This will be my first macbook i'll be purchasing.

The lines for the ipad and iphone were really, really long. I'm not going to wait like that. I'd rather go home and buy it online or go to best buy or fry's or whatever.

What do you all think about how long the lines will be for the new MBA's/lion? Even though lion will only be downloadable, i'm guessing many people that won't buy anything will still want to try it out and, hence, make others with money to spend wait! Thoughts?

Second question is... i'm probably going to buy the 27" LED Cinema too. Anybody hear anything about the odds that will be refreshed as well? I don't want to buy the current one on the 14th (in addition to my MBA) and then have a new thunderbolt equipped one come out a week later.

There will be NO lines for the new MBA/Lion launch. Trust me. You're gonna be fine.

Wish I knew this too. MacRumors Buyers Guide says 'don't buy'. Unless someone else pipes in, I would go with that.

Can I expect full compatibility with a Xerox laser printer, canon scanner and such? I am confident the software will run on the Mac nicely, just worry about being the early adopter and having driver type issues. Or is it really not a problem since it is still a "10 - decimal - insert sequence number here" - release?

I'm ready. Based on my experience with Snow Leopard and Aperture 3 plus the Net talk regarding FCP X I wouldn't be surprised if it's got several notable goofs and calamities in it. At least I'm not have over-expectations.

As such my MBP is going to be my experimental/sacrificial fun-with-Lion computer. I plan on doing a clean install as soon as how to do it gets figured out and then I'll import data etc from a cloned drive. It looks as if my ancient X-Rite monitor profiling app is the only one that will have to hit the trash can.

I'm looking forward to the improvements in Lion. I'll probably toss some of the iOSish stuff if I don't like them and keep it looking like a real computer OS as much as possible.

Meanwhile my Mac Pro is going to remain on SL until all the odds and ends get ironed out.

I wouldn't be surprised if they add Thunderbolt to the displays over the next little while. I would think the displays would get updated with the Minis and the Pros.

It will be awesome to see the new hardware.
It will be awesome to see the new OSX crashing and burning like all recent Apple OSXs have done in their first months of release. I can almost guarantee that OSX 10.7 is about as ready to release as a fornicator thinking about Dr. Ruth.
You're right. I ran all the beta builds including this current 'GM' and although it's much better than earlier releases, its still got lots of niggles and isn't ready for prime time in my opinion & I'd strongly recommend holding off the update until they iron out the bugs via updates etc - especially if you use iWeb which just works sporadically and only saves changes when it feels like with Lion.
Bring on new Mac Pro's though! :)

I would expect problems in those areas. 10.7 can't run apps that were compiled before roughly late-2005, OSX 10.4.4. And even then, it might not run apps created after that date if they weren't compiled for Intel.

Almost makes you wonder if it should be called OS X.

Oh, also, since x86 32-bit systems are no longer supported, there is a possibility that drivers/extensions that don't have 64-bit support also won't work. Anybody know?

Thanks for your comment! I will probably wait a few weeks, or at least until I can confirm compatibility.

I'm excited as well, but if I've learned anything over the past 8 years or so, ALWAYS wait before immediately jumping on anything new Apple puts out, especially OS X.

I'll be waiting till 10.7.1 or 10.7.2 is released before I jump on the Lion to avoid the major bugs. But I am very excited to do so. :D I'm sure many of you are running it fine without any issues, but personally I'm just hesitant when it comes to jumping on a brand new OS thats been freshly released to the wild.

I'm sure it'll be fine for most people... now if it was called OS X Lion "Pro", I'd be very very worried.

Sorry to burst your bubble man. Sure it will have it's little glitches, but I have been running 10.7 on 3 different machines since this last Friday and it's the Bomb! Stable and lot's of sick new features.

10.7 Cometh:)

As someone who used Apple's OSs as soon as they were released I have to say your statement is just plain incorrect.

But really we shouldn't all be running and buying it on day one. If this really is a flawless release, I will be impressed. But I'm not going to buy my upgrade for at least a few weeks and then I will only buy if the consensus is that it is near perfect. I'm also expecting at least one patch to come out in the first three weeks. I will wait for that patch before I buy as well.

I'm curious as to what type of mission critical work people are doing that means the odd crash on a backed up machine running a new iteration of an OS is deemed too risky

I predicted this a few weeks ago - a full MAC computer update, all desktops and laptops, minor tweaks for MBP and iMac and major updates for the rest and all with Lion, a complete MAC family upgrade.....

You clearly haven't tried Lion golden master. I've been using it for about a week and haven't had ONE crash since. Nor did i find any significant bugs.

Well, I'm not convinced it's anywhere near perfect. It can still be a little laggy at times, and I don't think the wifi is where it needs to be. But it is definitely a step up from Dev 4, which was a step back from Dev 2.

Why so much animosity toward Lion?

Sure, there may be a few bumps along the way for some folks - but it's not as if developers and extremely impatient forum surfers haven't already been playing with it for months...

I've heard nothing catastrophic yet.

Apple is coming closer to converging their OS code bases among Touch, Phone, Pad, Mac. The power increases on Pad, Phone and Touch is nearing an old school C2D Mini now so the convergence is more real than theory.

To the point where iMovie runs on Phone and FCPX will run on Pad HD.

Convergence is among us in the post-PC era. Deal with it.

Lion, FCPX, and iOS5 are Version 1.0. They have not arrived yet. Be very careful about BEING A BLEEDING EDGE ADOPTER.

Rocketman

You mean other than the fact that I haven't been able to get Time Machine to do a full backup on my iMac in over 4 weeks, since I put Lion on it, and I finally had to wipe the backup drive and start over last night? Long night, worrying about my pictures, music and documents.

Fact is, Snow Leopard works just fine, and given hindsight I would have left Lion alone on a non-dedicated non-dev machine/partition until at least 10.7.1.
