1st thought into my head. Walk into any Currys PC world and there is hardly any staff and the staff that are there are uninterested, unmotivated and to be fair technically clueless. This is a pretty interesting article and will be interesting to see how it affects the retail experience. Ill be keeping an eye in my local Apple retail store for any drastic changes.

Couldn't agree more. I've corrected so many people at PC World its unreal. Funniest moment was back when I was like 14 and needed to buy Microsoft office for mac. The guy in PC world didn't even know and said its a Windows product it doesn't exist for Mac and he argued with me for ages, before I found it on the shelf LOL. Needless to say he looked kinda humiliated.

He really shouldn't have argued with me :p

If the retail experience in Apple stores becomes poor and the sale in Apple products decline, you know who to blame. I reckon if that does happen this John Browett will be out faster than a Dell server crashing. :D

Why did Apple hire him? have they seen the state of PC World, Currys & Dixons Stores? They have like 3 members of staff out on the shop floor, whats usually one of the massive warehouse sized megastores LOL.

Most PC World stores feel like they've been designed by an accountant and not a designer. Hoping that gaudy depressing grey look doesn't translate into Apple Stores lol

Some people need to either get a sense of humor or at least lighten up. The point wasn't whether or not Apple is justified in their layoffs - I don't see it as any thing bad. My mocking tone was towards those people on here who keep insisting that Apple can do whatever its wants because it has more money than several nations.

And that's why I said Apple has an unemployment rate. Because if you (posters) on here want to refer to Apple as a "country" then stating they have an unemployment rate fits that paradigm.

Sorry - forgot it was a Monday. And that anything, even in jest, would be taken so seriously. Especially with winks and smiley faces in the post...

So much for the anti-Apple hate you. Just bickering. Always bickering. But I get it, you're a big Apple fan and you're trying to be logical. Good good!

Given, I'm not happy by the situation, how did you come to the conclusion of Apple having an unemployment rate? Do you know the entire picture? Are you sure Apple is not hiring any where else?

For a job where you need 20 people, if you hire 40, what are you gonna do? I'm not saying Apple shouldn't have hired 40. Obviously they shouldn't have. I'm saying that there could be something more than meets the eye.

Hold off your hate-horse before you know much about the story, you biggest Apple fan on this forum. ;)

You don't become and stay at the top of your industry by pissing away cash. This isn't a charity, it's a business. You keep as many employees as necessary to get the job done. In the retail world, especially on the scale that Apple operates, this number can fluctuate from time to time.

APPLE IS DOOMED!!!!

I was kinda expecting something like that on page 1.

Anyway

Hows my Iphone coming along Tim?

Wtf? This is disgusting. Apple is sitting on a boat load of cash and can’t promote employees? Glad I don’t work there. I was thinking about getting a weekend job there.
Too bad I guess.

I also would love a job there. 25% discount on all new Macs wold be SWEEEEET!!!!

I didn't realize Apple was running a charity.

Nothing to do with a running a 'charity.' He's saying that it's bad enough to be working a retail job at a low wage. I've worked retail and considering what you have to deal with; suck up managers to kiss customers a$$es and think their job is what it's all about; dealing with equally idiotic customers who think their better than you. Yes retail is a lot of work for little pay. After my experiences with retail, I would never do it again.

If you've never worked retail, you have no idea how ruthless it can be considering how little it pays.

Being such a huge Apple fanantic, people ask me all the time why I don't work for Apple. It's simple. When the honeymoon ends after 2 weeks, you realize it's just another sh**** retail job. People think working at the Apple Store is like Willy Wonkas or something. It's just retail. Dealing with the idiot public, crappy hours, and crappy pay. Sorry, but you can't pay a mortgage making $12 bucks an hour. What do these people expect? Working at the Apple Store is no different than working for Best Buy, Radio Shack or the Gap.

The only real difference is that Apple is not going bankrupt. Also, I'd rather sell and get discounts on Apple products than clothes. But seriously, this a job for a teenager, not a full career choice.

A word of advice for Ive--a product entails two things: goods and services. If you're going to claim to be focused on making a great product, you better shell out extra money to keep your geniuses satisfied, or the product quality will suffer :p

All company layoffs are justified. If the company does not want/need employees, then it shouldn't have employees.

It's not rocket science as much as it is economic science on seasonally adjusted work force. For Apple to make it an excuse is inexcusable. Full-time staffers are the minimal number required during the low season. Bring in part-timers for the anticipated increased workload, as long as full-timers are required to put in extra hours to help train part-timers. Pay full-timers more base salary and a small cut from the part-timers they are responsible for. When the peak is over, lay off the part-timers. They won't be hurt because they know this going in.
What Apple is doing is mimicking US retail auto sales model where the hungriest (meanest carnivores) will bring in the most revenues for the company. Teach these kids bad habits from the beginning and they will be messed up for life. The company needs to go back to the drawing board to draft amicable labor policies. I suspect all this is the meeting of the minds of Jobs and Cook. One of them is dead now so there is no reason the other one can't change it, if he wants good people to become loyal fans also. C'mon Cook, your products gross the highest margin on this planet. Don't tell me you can't spare a few dollars to care for your own people.

You wanted higher wages and you got them. The downside is you can't employ as many people.

Except, with Apple profits, they definitely can. And I doubt this has anything to do with recently reported miniscule wage increases. It has everything to do with stagnating iDevice sales.

If you really hate it don't shop there and then the retail genius responsible will get fired. Continue to shop there and he gets bonused up the wazoo.

Tell that to Australia. They seem to be unable to grasp the concept and suffer from high employment and high wages.

They also charge more for their products. In the gaming industry, its a common complaint from Australian gamers that they pay more for their copies of the games than pretty much any other person on the planet.

Yes, that's because it's a low-skill job that most people can do. If I were to work with Apple, I'd at least aim to be a Genius. I can already be one with my current knowledge.

Well there you have it. If $90 games aren't a sign of a broken economy, I don't know what is.

OK, if I ever open a small store, I'll pay my employees 10 cents per hour because my profits are so low compared to other businesses. That's how it ought to work, right? Pay employees based on company profits?

A negative report with absolutely no source and no confirmation and immediately the glass-half-empty crowd goes berserk. Only on MacRumors where the iHaters outnumber the fans by at least 10 to 1.

Actually a product is either a good or a service - Apple just happens to be a company that does both :p

wow everyone was thinking the exact same thing I was.

This stinks of the new guy

+1 browett joins then apple starts laying off

Currys/pc world are horrific

pc world near me has two aisles of rubbish cheap pcs and a small desk area with a mac mini and MacBook air

The rest of it is an aisle of printers and several rows of tvs, not to mention there's a currys next door which, yep sells tvs/fridges etc.

Dsg as a company must haemorrhage cash

Yeah, some people forget there is such a thing as good work and bad work. If they aren't doing a good job, Apple can and should let them go. I've run into quite a few great Apple Geniuses and a fair share of people who could care less.

I didn't realize Apple was running a charity.

It’s not about running a charity. It’s about paying your staff. If apple is making the profit it does to make it the #1 company in the world then there is no reason not to pay the employees what they disserve. I stood in line at the Apple store for 14 hours at the launch of the iPad2 and the staff were fantastic up-spirited and treated the people in line with great respect. I have never had that level of service in any retail store before. :apple:
