Working in one of the bigger post houses on the east cost, I (along with most of our staff)...think as most are saying...this machine/monitor is aimed at the very extreme pro high end market...I'm talking high end movie studios, high end color places, higher end creative agencies, etc. I'd called these people the 'XPros' that bring in multi hundred K or million dollar jobs

Apple seems to have lost it's understanding of what their other "Pro" market is which is the majority of us looking for a modular tower that is also "AFFORDABLE" like their previous towers were back in the mid 2000s (I'm sorry inflation hasn't gone up that much)

The majority of "Pro" don't need 6k-8K and need more standard HD/4K workflows.

This machine/monitor is aimed at the most 10-20% of their pro user base.

Hey! Ever need any composers? I’m your guy? NYC based?

Interesting. I'm actually curious why this took so long.

I mean, unless I'm missing something, this is a tower. The airflow design seems cool (har, har). I actually really like the way it comes apart.

I'm not sad this is back in the fold. (Can't say I love the new look but... so much design is change for the sake of change anyway.) I just cannot figure out why this took so long to release. It's a tower. We've had these for a long time. They even used to make them.

Just weird.

You need to look at potential specs and speeds I suppose.

Predictable and boring lol. You're butthurt because you were talking rubbish and got caught out. What i said is 100% FACT. Apple is just living inside its own bubble. 6k for a machine and its starting with 8 cores and 256gb ssd? LOL

Totally agree. This machine is a joke at base specs which means that a real world build is going to price out most people who bought a Mac Pro in the past. I still use an old cheese grater but I won’t be able to afford this and the consumer Macs don’t suite my needs. It’s sad to see what Apple has become.

Omg I don’t like how it looks, although flawed and disliked, the 2013 Mac Pro is one of Apples most beautiful Macs ever made.
Most beautiful but worse upgradability. While I think the new Mac Pro is not that great looking, I HIGHLY applaud that it is a beast! I take function over form any day, but I do like how Apple did, at least, make the new pro easy on the eyes.

Sorry, but many 3d renderers use CUDA. Also Adobe apps work much better with Cuda than openCL. OpenCL is not only slow, but it can also make apps crash. I’ll avoid it if possible.

I do have new iMac and MBP, but all ”real” videowork and design is done with proper Xeon workstatuon with multiple Nvidia GPUs.

Can you define “real?”

As delighted and relieved as I am about this, they're up their old trick of sticking a crappy budget GPU in the base model to back into that $6k price, rather than going with the obviously preferred choice of a Vega 64 with 16GB of RAM. I'm betting that proprietary upgrade to the next tier will cost $2k by itself.

It's been a long wait, but at last I the new Mac Pro is nearly here. I'm happy people have their opinions about looks and price, but I'm definitely buying one – just need to see what specs I can afford/justify and then factor in upgrades down the line. I know it'll be expensive but I haven't given Apple any serious money since 2010, so I can live with it.

Hooray for a new Mac Pro and new display.

Boo for the BUTT UGLY hole/design pattern that would make me want to hide them under a rock.

Johnny Ive needs to retire if he thinks that is an attractive design.

Remember not every use for this is gpu heavy.

IMHO.

I think you are mostly correct as I think for most "Pros", something lesser will suffice. I have been making do with less for years.

Never the less, Apples needs an aspirational "Ultimate Workstation" even at a "premium price". Maybe the entry level model can be made for less, but the entry model still shares the upgradability potential that none other have.

If you income is time dependent, this might be the solution for you. With the shrinking workstation market this is really the only viable option for Apple.

Phenomenal machine. I'm just curious as to what the price tops out at. I know it's not geared towards people like me but i'm guessing like $40K

I am sure there are individuals out there that can afford this machine but I am not one of them. Thus I am still left wanting a box that is expandable and powerful enough for normal pro use. There is a huge gap in the Apple line up that seriously needs to be filled. I guess I just don’t fit the Apple profile any more.

No worries , Apple will have known that and are banking on you throwing your 6k pathethic spec mac Pro in the bin and coughing up another 6k
That's the thing will Apple be upgrading this in the next year or 18 months with new hardware from Intel and AMD or will it still have the same spec 3 years from no like the trash can but still cost $6,000

My guess...Intel.

Mostly good. Wish the base model Pro price was feasible for home users, like it was in the old days of the G3 through original cheese grater.

CUDA is an absolute need for me, so if you have to use that really proprietary-looking MPX module for graphics and can’t just slam an NVIDIA card in one of the other PCIe slots, this has to be a pass.

Have to ask why do you need Cuda?

My only complaint is 2 thunderbolt ports and 2 usb ports.

I am barely making do with 4 TB3 ports and 4 USB3 ports on my imac Pro.

So is that a valid complaint? I am totally interested besides that, but can't think of any workaround to the huge amount of external audio gear I have in the studio.

4 ports on a 6 thousand dollar computer is indeed ridiculous.

Thank you.
I have been saying this on this forum and people just don't get it. I work on motion graphics in LA/NY for the past 20 years. I freelance on several high end studios and I doubt they will buy many of these MP's and displays for their staff. It's too much $$$ and companies are budget conscious and they want to see performance for a good price.
Sure, I can see folks buying these but, starting at $11/12k for a MP/Display combo it's too much for a pro unless you are on the super high end bracket that brings Thousands of dollars per day of work.
I am just worried that lack of sales might constrain the further development in the future. Apple should have a option of MP/display starting at $5/6k and not on an iMac form factor.
