Apple really do live in a different universe to me - this is some kind of meme of their G5/Mac Pro design. Can’t see this lasting any longer than the trash can at those prices.

What happen someday when Mac clone builder find out that Apple and the MAC OS will require you to have an Apple T2 security chip to run the OS!! You will not be able to get that off the shelf! And don't think that you can EPROM to create one, this chip can reports back to Apple. So i would rather have a real Mac not a cobbled up Mac.....

Interesting that a 1988 serial digital interface was adopted for pro video monitors. The coaxial cable has a number of advantages that supports the 4K+ digital monitors.

It's because SDI connections are used everywhere in the production side. All high end cameras like the ARRI Alexas or the REDs can have SDI connections for output. SDI used to be necessary in the post side too, but TB3 and other connections are proving to be better for workstations now.

It's a great machine, but i'm disappointed with the storage. Only two SSDs at 2TB each max. I had the Mac Pro 2010 and you could fit four drives. What do I do in this situation. I have four (4) 4TB hard drives in a RAID0 on my PC build - would have to go external yes?

Yah and that would be a better option nowadays anyway. A NAS can automatically backup to Backblaze and be hot swappable with no tools.
Agreed. The trend is away from massive internal storage and towards massive external storage, as it should be. Been rocking a Synology 918+ and its win, 24TB in RAID6 for about a grand. And you don’t have to go RAID for big, fast external storage. Thunderbolt = no bottleneck. Plenty of options.

@op, btw, why would you put 4 drives in RAID0? 16TB with no fault tolerance is risky. Storage is cheap. Suggest you buy more than you need and set up some form of parity, unless all you care about is as fast write speeds as possible.

And it's still the previous generation Xeon processor. You're paying $592 extra for that configuration. I can buy a 64GB stick of RAM for that price. The only difference would be the GPU, which is not that much better. The Quadros are only worth it when you have the high memory version of 16GB+. At 8GB it's not that much better than a consumer card. Also, that Precision only supports optane memory to 6TB whereas the Mac Pro can take up to 32TB.

So in the end, it's actually very competitively priced considering the premiums Apple usually places on their products.
The problem with Apple is that they do not specify the exact models of their processors. If you check Xeon W data on Intel website, you won't find a model matching Apple specs (3.5GHz Intel Xeon W, 8 cores, 16 threads, Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz, 24.5MB cache). Sometimes Apple seemingly request custom models from Intel just to make price comparisons impossible. Not all W processors are that expensive.

How much should a Xeon workstation like the 2019 Mac Pro cost? What do equivalent workstations cost?

Eh, it depends. If you have to stick with Xeons and pre-built, most similar workstations (assuming we know the actual model of the Xeon Apple is using) will run around $5,500-6,500. While I agree that this seems absurdly priced, everyone needs to understand it's probably the Xeons that are causing a huge chunk of that expense.

If you're building your own, you can build a MUCH better 18 core build with more ram, more space, more internal upgradeability, and better graphics for around $3,500-4,500. And if you don't mind a few used parts, you can go around $2,500.

This new mac pro is definitely a better value than the previous. I bought a more powerful workstation than the trash-can Mac Pro years ago for $380 total (including upgraded graphics). Now, why people are still paying over $1,000 for 2013 mac pros is absolutely beyond me...but this new mac pro is eh-priced for what it is. Those new Xeons are pricey and not at all worth it, in my opinion.

So just for grins, I specced out an HP Z6 workstation model with similar specs to the announced $5999.00 base model MacPro (though not the same video card) and it came out to $7500.00. So this is not a bad deal at all, comparatively. Yes, one can build a powerful PC with non-enterprise parts and get maybe similar benchmarks but not with This Intel Gold XEON model (On HP’s site, just the CPU is a $5200 option) and the ECC High-Speed RAM and the Workstation class video cards that have been tested and certified and spec’d to run all the high-end pro editing apps.

Also, I think this looks cool. I want to call it Brutal Industrial and I personally think it looks sort of mean and awesome. Just my opinion though.

This is certainly more than I need and I won’t buy one - my 15” MB Pro handles all I need - but for the Pros, this looks great!

Come on dude really you need to spec out your computer out to $20000 dollars right away!!!! And who says you have to use apple SSD's and Apple memory and if you watched the developers conference, it has a standard PCI slot of if you don't want to go super duper on the video card you don't have to. I am going to get the lowest graphics card and upgrade the card in a year or two! That is what is great about the new Mac Pro you can upgrade it yourself!!!!!
Well, perhaps you misunderstood my post - you're preaching to the choir. Right now, if this is really of the old cheese grater design with motherboard updates, etc., I could almost justify buying the low end model, having faith that I could gradually upgrade it over a few years (first priority would be to add more SSD storage a.s.a.p.). This is perhaps the best thing Apple has come out with for professional use in at least 7 years. My faith in Apple with the Mac has been severely ruptured over the last several years, and before investing in something like this, I want to have my confidence restored that Apple is serious about Macs and MacOS for the future. I'll give you a link to a sample of the competition for this new Mac Pro from System76, with its high end Thelio. Go to the link and design the machine of your dreams, then compare. It's a Linux machine, not Windows:

Well, the difference this time is that they are no longer cornered themselves on a thermal wall and more traditional approach in design would allow them to get more frequent update unlike their previous trash can design. Due to pressure by AMD in recent years and Intel is finally starting to move away from 14nm starting next year so Mac Pro is not in a bad position like it looks currently. Intel is also moving to Pcie 5.0 in couple of years.

Sounds like the new Mac Pro will be more interesting in a few years, then.

We'll see if this machine gets timely updates. Hopefully it won't be limited by intel.

I like it a lot, but the entry-level pricing is crazy. It’s not unreasonable to want a Mac Pro that starts at around what Mac Pros have always cost.

No more crazy than the Mac IIfx *starting* around $9K in 1990.

Apple and Intel for the last 10 years where Apple gets the latest version of Xeon processors, so it would not be on there because the system does not ship until fall and the chip is the latest generation that you can not purchase over the counter yet.

Not gonna lie, this is the first time in a LONG time that Apple truly blew me away with something! This Mac Pro gave me a mindblowing "holy ****" moment that I haven't experienced from Apple since the 2000's!

Sure, it's a bit pricey but in the end, not really. It's just a $1000 more than the base iMac Pro even though it is FAR more capable and is worth the extra grand IMO. It's also the same price as the XDR display ($5000 + $1000 for the stand), yet this can obviously do so much more and is a better value for the money! Not to mention, this is aimed at.. you know.. actual professionals, in enterprises, where $6000 for this beast of a computer is nothing.

Gotta give props to Apple for this, they truly knocked this Mac Pro out of the park!
This is the best computer tower that I've ever seen!

I know, man, they finally step up and now people are bitching about the way it looks. Holy hell, you're not going to mount it above your fireplace, are you?

I pity the poor spouses of this whining bunch.

A lot of people here are perpetually unhappy. And I suspect a good percentage of them don't have spouses.

Apple today at its WWDC 2019 keynote unveiled its long-awaited Mac Pro redesign.

2019-mac-pro-side-and-front.jpg

The all-new Mac Pro is an absolute powerhouse with up to 28-core Intel Xeon processors, up to 1.5TB of ECC RAM, up to 4TB of SSD storage, up to AMD Radeon Pro Vega II Duo graphics with 64GB of HBM2 memory, and eight PCIe expansion slots for maximum performance, expansion, and configurability.

The new design includes a stainless steel frame with smooth handles and an aluminum housing that lifts off for 360-degree access to the entire system. The housing also features a unique lattice pattern, which has already been referred to as a cheese grater, to maximize airflow and quiet operation.

Apple says the new Mac Pro provides over 300W of power and has a "state-of-the-art thermal architecture" to allow the processor to run "fully unconstrained all the time." This is a significant change from the previous Mac Pro, which Apple eventually admitted led it "into a bit of a thermal corner."

The new Mac Pro features Apple Afterburner, a new accelerator card that can decode up to three streams of 8K ProRes RAW video and 12 streams of 4K ProRes RAW video in real time, effectively eliminating proxy workflows.

Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller:

Apple says the new Mac Pro starts at $5,999 in the United States with an eight-core Intel Xeon processor, 32GB of ECC RAM, AMD WX 7100 graphics, and 256GB of SSD storage and will be available to order in the fall.

Apple also introduced a new 32-inch 6K display named the Pro Display XDR that will also be available in the fall starting at $4,999.

More details can be found on Apple's new Mac Pro page on its website. While not advertised, the current Mac Pro remains available to purchase for now.

I suspect everyone complaining about the price is not really at the high end Pro user who don't blink at prices for a computer workstation.

Sure. Most of them are fans of the previous cheese grater that was, while expensive, at least in the range of an enthusiast. This will be $10K before you get to a configuration that makes any sense at all for the base hardware. For the very few who actually buy it I suspect $15K to $20K will be more representative.

It is what it is, and that excludes many previous Mac Pro owners.

The case design is very ugly, the cheese grater holes are too large, the handles and feet are silly looking, and the curves on the box are unnecessary.

This was the wrong direction for Apple to take. An entry level Mac under $1,000 with upgradable modular parts is the right direction.

This box is unobtainable for even pro users. I’ll be hanging on to my 2010 Mac Pro for many years to come. This is getting ridiculous.

I sent this post to Tim Cook; he will surely have egg on his face for not having you do his market research when this fails. Hopefully he will apologise to you personally at some point.

There are pro users and pro users. Clearly this is marketed to the pros that CAN afford it.

It's not specified but easily searchable on Geekbench and other sites once the machine is released. But yah, the pricing is not disclosed because they're custom like you said. Instead of a W-2145, the base iMac Pro uses a W-2140B. Given the W-2145 still has a MSRP of $1100, the 2017 8-core W line is not that much cheaper considering it "only" has a 11MB cache and 512GB of RAM support. Either way, pricing for Apple is still competitive.
